Today is a very important day in both U.S, and World History.  Victory Over Japan Day. (VJ)

On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was held in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri. At the time, President Truman declared September 2 to be VJ Day.

The rest of the story:

A Little VJ Day History
The war in the Pacific was hard fought and bloody. The tide had definitely turned, and the U.S. military was fighting island by island towards Japan. Resistance was fierce. Casualties on both sides were high.

The U.S. had developed the atomic bomb. The U.S. government was anxious to end the war, and stop the loss of American lives.

On August 6th, 1945, the United States military dropped an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan in an effort to force Japan into an immediate, unconditional surrender. Instead of immediately surrendering, the Japanese government debated what to do. So, the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on August 9, 1945 over the city of Nagasaki, Japan.

On August 14, 1945, Japanese Emperor Hirohito cabled the U.S. to surrender, and agreed to the terms of the Potsdam Declaration.

On August 15, 1945, news of the surrender was announced to the world. World War II was finally over. Hostilities ended.

On September 2, 1945, the Japanese formally surrendered aboard the U.S. battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. President Truman declared this to be V-J Day.

Did You Know? The battleship USS Missouri was chosen for the formal surrender ceremony, as she was named after President Truman's home state.

We don't have Chip's comprehensive history to start the day, so let me inadequately substitute the five things you need to know today from USAToday:

1. American Catholics may not believe what you think

An unprecedented bit of research shows that USA Catholics' views may be a-changing. A trove of data out Wednesday from the Pew Research Center finds that the typical American Catholic doesn't find it sinful to use contraception or to live with a romantic partner outside of marriage. While nearly half of Catholics believe the church should not recognize the marriages of gay and lesbian couples, just as many think it should. The findings come as Pope Francis this week waded into one of the thorniest topics of his papacy: abortion.

I'm pretty sure you're right, I think this area is the latest start. Fine by me, just a tough week between our vacation and the start of school. Either way it's no picnic, not looking forward to homework

2. Report ties about 51% of immigrant households to welfare

Immigrants are far more likely to use government welfare programs than the native-born population, according to a Center for Immigration Studies report released Wednesday. About 51% of immigrant-led households receive some kind of welfare benefit, compared to 30% for native-led households. The findings may fuel the ongoing debate on the presidential campaign trail. Trump's immigration proposal has sparked controversy within the 2016 Republican field. Former Gov. Jeb Bush called it "unrealistic," and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker fumbled on supporting ending birthright citizenship.

3. Planned Parenthood funding taken to federal court

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast Inc., will ask a federal judge Wednesday to block an effort by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to cut the health care provider out of the state's Medicaid program. The effort to terminate Planned Parenthood was launched following the release of a series of undercover videos by abortion opponents that have raised questions about clinic operations. The Justice Department weighed in Monday, saying that terminating the provider from the federally-subsidized Medicaid program would deny beneficiaries free choice to obtain medical care.

4. First hearing in case of Baltimore officers charged in Freddie Gray's death

Protests are expected outside the court house in Baltimore for the first hearing in the case of Freddie Gray, four months after six Baltimore police officers were charged in his death. Gray's death inspired daily protests and a riot erupted on the day of Gray's funeral. All six officers, including Edward Nero and Garrett Miller, are charged with second-degree assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White and Officer William Porter also face a manslaughter charge, while Officer Caesar Goodson faces the most serious charge of all: second-degree "depraved-heart" murder. A second hearing will be held Sept. 10 to determine if the trial, scheduled to start Oct. 13 should go forward in Baltimore or be moved outside the city.

5. 'Mr. Robot' finale airs after it too-closely mirrored real life

USA Network will air the Season 1 finale of Mr. Robot on Wednesday, a week later than scheduled. The network postponed the show in the wake of the shooting murders of two Virginia journalists — Adam Ward and Alison Parker — on live television. In a statement, USA said the finale showed graphic scenes similar to what happened in Virginia. "Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight's episode."

I thought it was good, but still a little young.  It has all the potential to a be a really good medium bodied smoke - creamy, minimal spice, almost like a butter cream sweetness...paired pretty well with that beer actually too.  I will revisit in 3months

New Braunfels calls it Worstfest and celebrates it November 6th - 15th this year.  It is a pretty neat deal even if it is a Nazi celebration. :)  Fish and Nate should be there since it is a Sausage Celebration. :o

Sprechen sie fun?

Join us for unique annual celebration rich in German culture and full of Texas fun! Located near the headwaters of the beautiful Comal River in New Braunfels, Texas!

Here you’ll enjoy good food, music, dancing, exciting carnival rides and games, German, Texan and domestic beer, special events and the finest in Alpine and Bavarian Style Entertainment.

It all happens at Wurstfest! The best ten days in sausage history.

Years ago they use to have eatable panties.  My wife bought some, and put them on.  Banana flavored.  The food coloring stained.  Her ass was bright yellow for about a week.

Good morning boys, working from home today with the kids...and Nacho
Morning, Scott. No school for them today?
No, they don't start until next Tuesday. This is always a tough week to fill
Interesting. Didn't know there were some schools out there that still started on a decent date. Mine have been back for almost 2 weeks.
Gabrielle starts next week, but is going in on friday to help decorate for the new year (Service club).
Good morning boys.

I don't think you are supposed to wear them all day....something to put on just before snack time.
Chewy...
think Tuna scented fruit roll ups....
That about covers it.  Maybe add a little floral touch....

You do know that that fine Texan beer, Shiner has quited the....a.....variety of offerings...

Yesterday my friend brought some Michelob golden light beer over.  It tasted like water to me.  I can't believe they slapped a Michelob name onto it...!
I don't think I've had a Michelob product in at least 35 years.

Last night's cigar and beverage:

Damn, I saw the Sam Adams and the color thinking you had stepped up to the plate with an Oktoberfest Man's Beer but when I enlarged the photo I discovered my error.  Should have known you still dress up for Halloween in a bunny costume.
This beer was actually pretty damn good, even you might like it Tex.  It's a very toned down ST Pumking
Is that a pumpkin flavored cigar too...?
No, lingerie flavored.

Actually, Anheiser Busch is owned by InBev out of Belgium, so Commies, not Nazi's
Miller is owned by SAB Miller now out of London (previously South Africa)
and Coors is also owned by SAB under Molson.

Yuengling and Boston Beer (Sam Adams) are tie for largest American owned brewery.
So who would thought that Commie Yellowstar is more 'Murican than TexDave.  (In regard to beer drinking)

Well I dispute the more commie than CG as I have not had anything on that commie list in at least 3 years and I drink Sam Adams on a regular basis and buy at least 4-6 12 paks of SA Oktoberfest every year to sip all the way thru the winter.  I don't drink Yuengling because it has an Asian name that does not rhyme with Beer.   Probably 80% of everything I consume (beer wise, I do drink foreign liquor) is from a small craft brewery  with 1/2 or more of them in TX and owned by Texans even though some of those might be Austin Commies.  Ballast Point could probably be considered commie for sure and I drink several from CO breweries which are likely commie I guess.

This is replacing the minivan.  My '99 Intrepid is the one I put the money into and will continue to do so.
So what are your looking for?  'Murican, ferin?  Four door sedan?  what?
New minivan for transporting the brood.  Finalizing paperwork now.  Upgraded to a better model but keeping the monthly payment the same.  Great deal if you ask me because the current minivan has about $3000 worth of damage to it.

So I bought the new Xikar Turrim lighter awhile back on the devil. Bled it, filled it and cleaned it about 8 different times and the thing just isn't working. The entire bottom is a flame adjustment, nice clicking action when you turn it. Had it up at max and just didn't seem to be getting flow, you'd have to spin it at least half way before it even had a chance to light. Finally got around to removing the tailcap and resetting it, works like a champ now. The factory setting (stop) on the flame control was way too low and wouldn't allow it to burn properly

That's true but this is the fourth leased Honda Odyssey and the payment has remained the same but we kept having to get the "lesser" model.  This is the first time we're movin' on up.

Morning, Tex. No, not in the ditch. Sending lawyers in on that deal. They say I've got a good case. Never been a fan of lawsuits, but this cost me 20 large in lost wages and medical co-pays.

Days off never turn out the way you want them to, do they?

New lease.  Almost done.
Ah, the wife's car..... I understand.
that reminds me, mine is in the shop, gotta call to find out what
Alpha warranty folks said, about the rear axles, and the water pump.
They left a message on the Banter while you were away.  Said all that shit is broke just like you will be when it is fixed. :(
Call will be fixed on Friday, dealer parts ordered today. even got a one day car rental reimbursement of $35 approved.  Lexus wanted $7k for the work, my car dealer will fix it, only cost me $100 deductible.  $2,500 warranty just paid for itself, and I got 4 years and 95K miles left.

After all you put into that thing?
You going to look to do new or pre-owned?
This is replacing the minivan.  My '99 Intrepid is the one I put the money into and will continue to do so.
So what are your looking for?  'Murican, ferin?  Four door sedan?  what?
New minivan for transporting the brood.  Finalizing paperwork now.  Upgraded to a better model but keeping the monthly payment the same.  Great deal if you ask me because the current minivan has about $3000 worth of damage to it.
Sounds like a deal but there are no "better" models only models with more shit to break on them. :)
That's true but this is the fourth leased Honda Odyssey and the payment has remained the same but we kept having to get the "lesser" model.  This is the first time we're movin' on up.
LIke George Jefferson moving on up to the East Side!   Odyssey's are by far the nicest of the mini-vans IMHO.    I will have you come down to TX and do my shopping next time I decide to get a new car, no mini-vans for me though.   Perhaps on the way down here you can swing by St Louis and get Dad a fuk'n car and have that done with.
I lean to the Sienna.

No Raz today, hope he is not back in the ditch!
Whattaya mean? I checked in before 0730 PST. Been here ever since, in between workaference.
Guess I slept through that one.  Morning Raz
Morning, Tex. No, not in the ditch. Sending lawyers in on that deal. They say I've got a good case. Never been a fan of lawsuits, but this cost me 20 large in lost wages and medical co-pays.
I'm not litigious at all but if you suffered a legit loss, you absolutely deserve it.
That's the conclusion I came to. Not to mention I get to live with the coming arthritis, according to the orthopedic surgeon.

The range could have at least put a warning sign up.
Or padded the bottom of the ditch!

Now there's a thought!  I'm sure it would sell!
Years ago they use to have eatable panties.  My wife bought some, and put them on.  Banana flavored.  The food coloring stained.  Her ass was bright yellow for about a week.
Anyone surprised BD has a story to fit this situation?
No.

Well, not necessarily. There's that period between the purchase of the minivan and the conception of kid #2 that can be action-packed. After that, though, you're done.

I never bought the minivan, so never let the missus develop that mentality.

You and Tony are smelling like fresh motor oil today
I think that's the Axe Body Spray.
I saw that stuff on TV, hot girl said supposed to get you some pu$$y but no mention of a new mini-van
The only guys who believe that Axe can get them some action are guys who've bought minivans.
D'oh!
You buying a minivan, your action days are well behind you.
Well, not necessarily. There's that period between the purchase of the minivan and the conception of kid #2 that can be action-packed. After that, though, you're done.

I never bought the minivan, so never let the missus develop that mentality.
So you still delude yourself into thinking you're in control?
Oh hell no. I just never let her believe I'll stay under control if she relaxes her game.

I got to remember the warden and I need new passports next year.
In order to get back into Texas?
I meant renew them but yes, we only speak English so we must present a passport to get into Texas.

Afternoon Bean, figured you had been riding the Sister's Pony all day trying to find some cheap'o smokes
No, haven't been over there in quite some time.  Besides, I have an overabundance of cheapo sticks accumulated over the years which I need to get rid of short of finding a canal somewhere.

Wasn't implying otherwise. Partly my point. This isn't a racial thing anymore, if it ever was. It's just people looking to blow shit up.

Turns out the last school shooting we had up here happened because the shooter had decided to kill himself but wanted his homeys to keep him company. I exaggerate not.

But here's his best line of all time:

"You bitch about the present, and blame it on the past...I'd like to find your inner child and kick his little ass!"
