Charlotte, NC

Protests erupt after fatal shooting by police; 12 officers injured

dozen police officers were injured Tuesday night in clashes with several hundred people protesting an officer-involved fatal shooting in the University City area.

Shouting protesters continued to block streets well after midnight, despite the use of tear gas by police in riot gear.

The protest began on Old Concord Road at Bonnie Lane, where a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer fatally shot a man in the parking lot of a University City apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.

The man who died was identified late Tuesday as Keith Lamont Scott, 43, and the officer who fired the fatal shot was CMPD Officer Brentley Vinson, a police statement said. Both men were African-American, a police source confirmed.

Today is Wednesday, Sept. 21, the 265th day of 2016. There are 101 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Sept. 21, 1996, President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act denying federal recognition of same-sex marriages a day after saying the law should not be used as an excuse for discrimination, violence or intimidation against gays and lesbians. (Although never formally repealed, DoMA was effectively overturned by U.S. Supreme Court decisions in 2013 and 2015.)

On this date:

In 1792, the French National Convention voted to abolish the monarchy.

In 1866, English novelist H.G. Wells was born in Bromley, Kent.

In 1897, the New York Sun ran its famous editorial, written anonymously by Francis P. Church, which declared, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."

In 1925, the Rudolf Friml operetta "The Vagabond King" opened on Broadway.

In 1938, a hurricane struck parts of New York and New England, causing widespread damage and claiming some 700 lives.

In 1948, Milton Berle made his debut as permanent host of "The Texaco Star Theater" on NBC-TV.

In 1957, Norway's King Haakon VII died in Oslo at age 85. The legal mystery-drama "Perry Mason," starring Raymond Burr, premiered on CBS-TV.

In 1964, Malta gained independence from Britain.

In 1970, "NFL Monday Night Football" made its debut on ABC-TV as the Cleveland Browns defeated the visiting New York Jets, 31-21.

In 1976, Orlando Letelier (leh-tel-YEHR'), onetime foreign minister to Chilean President Salvador Allende (ah-YEN'-day), was killed when a bomb exploded in his car in Washington D.C. (The bombing, which also killed Letelier's assistant, Ronni Moffitt, was blamed on Chile's secret police.)

In 1989, Hurricane Hugo crashed into Charleston, South Carolina (the storm was blamed for 56 deaths in the Caribbean and 29 in the United States). Twenty-one students in Alton, Texas, died when their school bus, hit by a soft-drink delivery truck, careened into a water-filled pit.

In 1996, John F. Kennedy Jr. married Carolyn Bessette in a secret ceremony on Cumberland Island, Georgia. The board of all-male Virginia Military Institute voted to admit women.

Ten years ago: The Bush White House and rebellious Senate Republicans, including John McCain of Arizona, announced agreement on rules for the interrogation and trial of suspects in the war on terror. Space shuttle Atlantis and its six astronauts safely returned from a 12-day mission to install a big new piece of the orbiting outpost. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that all Americans ages 13 to 64 be routinely tested for HIV.

Five years ago: Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, two Americans jailed in Iran as spies, left Tehran for the Gulf state of Oman, closing a high-profile drama that brought more than two years of hope and heartbreak for their families. The state of Texas executed Lawrence Russell Brewer for his role in the gruesome dragging death of James Byrd Jr. The state of Georgia executed Troy Davis, who used his last words to declare his innocence in the killing of police officer Mark MacPhail. Alternative rock group R.E.M. announced on its website that it had "decided to call it a day as a band."

One year ago: Pope Francis traveled to Cuba's fourth-largest city, Holguin, where he celebrated a Mass marking the anniversary of the day he decided as a teenager to become a priest by pressing a subtle message to Cubans: Overcome ideological preconceptions and be willing to change. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker abandoned his bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. A federal judge in Albany, Georgia, sentenced former Peanut Corporation of America owner Stewart Parnell to 28 years in prison for his role in a deadly 2008-9 salmonella outbreak blamed for nine deaths.

Now here is a real surprise  ::)

From Halfwheel

General Cigar Raising Prices, Cites FDA

General Cigar Co. has informed retailers of an impending price increase set to take effect Oct. 3, 2016. The company, which is one of the largest premium cigar companies in the world, has explicitly said this increase is due to regulatory compliance costs as a result of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) new regulations of premium cigars. “Given the recent FDA regulations, it is necessary to raise prices to offset a portion of the increased regulatory costs and compliance expenses,” said Regis Broersma, ceo of General Cigar Co., in a letter to retailers. Most of the company’s cigars will increase in price ranging from 10-80 cents per cigar with a small number of lines, mostly those introduced at this year’s IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, avoiding a price increase. For Macanudo, most cigars will increase 20-30 cents—with some lower and higher—and Gold Label and Mao not increasing in price. Curiously, there doesn’t seem to be much of a pattern to this increase, only that the increases are roughly in line with the cost of the product, i.e. cigars that cost $3.50 are not seeing 60 cent price increases while $15 cigars are only raised 10 cents.

In reality it might be because of the huge drug crime problem surrounding the area.  Now the better use of tax dollars would be to rid the city of all that crap down there.

4-6 square block area around those fuk'n shelters have the highest crime rate in Austin.

Nicotine could protect brain from aging, disease

BRYAN, TX (KTRK) --
While smoking tobacco is known to be bad for your health, new research suggests nicotine may protect your brain from aging.

Texas A&M researchers say a new study even suggests when nicotine is given independently from tobacco, it could protect people from Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Ursula Winzer-Serhan, associate professor at Texas A&M College of Medicine, says she and other collaborators found nicotine's ability to suppress the appetite may have something to do with its possible protective effects.

Daughter said he had no gun, was reading a book and waiting to pick up his son from school.  Guess BLM folks will be adding book props to their protest to go along with the fictional hands up don't shoot narrative.

Anyone care to "man-up" on a burger?

HOUSTON (KTRK) --
The tiny red barn and the huge Double Dare Burger put Little Bitty Burger Barn on the map as one of Houston's favorite neighborhood burger shacks.

With sizzling bacon and a collection of hot sauces greeting you as soon as you walk through the door, Little Bitty Burger Barn offers Texans delicious hamburgers of all shapes and kinds. Boasting over thirty different kinds of burgers, Little Bitty Burger Barn has a burger for everyone, no matter what your preference! Using sauces from all across the nation, owner Orlando del Cid hopes to bring new flavors and experiences to all his customers.

Given the sheer selection of the specialty burgers, the Little Bitty Burger Barn offers two challenge burgers: the "Double Dare Burger" and the "Charlie's 5 Alarm Fire Burger." The "Double Dare Burger," a massive, two-pound burger with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and bacon, topped off with eight burger patties with cheese, has never seen its eater finish in less than thirty minutes.

Meanwhile, the "Charlie's 5 Alarm Fire Burger" requires its eater to sign a waiver before they begin indulging in the spiciest burger in all of Texas.

I have been to many places on both lists and I don't think most places are ranked very accurate on either!  How the hell can you have a median home price of $60,000, meaning there has to be a hell of a lot of homes well under $60k  - only possible answer is a lot of sub-standard and subsidized houses.

I can sure name about 12 places in  TX better to live than 12th ranked Pflugerville!  (That one is between Austin and Bean's area.)

Yeah, we were hit hard after the housing bubble burst (thanks, Obama). Starting to come back a bit, but slowly, keeping average home prices down. The people that live behind us have their home for sale, and they want to move to be closer to their kids, so they've lowered the price a few times, now it's down to $40k. I want to go over there and shake them for putting it down so low.

Cleveland finally makes the top-15 in a list that isn't an embarassment!

https://www.timeout.com/usa/things-to-do/best-places-to-live-in-the-us
I have been to many places on both lists and I don't think most places are ranked very accurate on either!  How the hell can you have a median home price of $60,000, meaning there has to be a hell of a lot of homes well under $60k  - only possible answer is a lot of sub-standard and subsidized houses.

I can sure name about 12 places in  TX better to live than 12th ranked Pflugerville!  (That one is between Austin and Bean's area.)

http://time.com/money/collection/best-places-to-live/50-best-places-to-live/
Yeah, we were hit hard after the housing bubble burst (thanks, Obama). Starting to come back a bit, but slowly, keeping average home prices down. The people that live behind us have their home for sale, and they want to move to be closer to their kids, so they've lowered the price a few times, now it's down to $40k. I want to go over there and shake them for putting it down so low.

I have not heard of or seen an inhabitable house (not on wheels anyway) under $50k in a lot of years.
Well, here it is. Nice enough house, though a bit small and older than mine. But if it drops any lower, I may consider buying it and turning it into one big smoking lounge. Lol

Morning NotDancin'BOTL.  The wife is hooked on that f'kn show this season.  Somewhat of a freak show appeal from what I saw last night.
I think every warden, or at least everyone over 40 anyway, is hooked on that stupid shit.  I would shoot the fuk'n tv if I had to watch it more than 3 minutes.
Lucky my wife hasn't hit that age, yet. Though, I know she thinks that sorta shit is stupid, hopefully that doesn't change as she climbs over the hill. Lol
That change marks the beginning of the end...

If that same house were in Austin, same relation to downtown, it would be listed $250K - $300K.
If in Westlake, Terrytown or a few other neighborhoods near downtown or the University it could easily be $500,000 and then they might raze it if the lot would hold something bigger.

Lol
And that age minimum may be closer to 50 so you could have an even larger factor of safety.

P.Terry's Commie Burger for lunch today
Those are a tasty bang for the buck burgers.  His fries are not good, however.

When fresh cooked, which they rarely are at the downtown joint, I like the fries better than the burger but neither is bad for cheapo certified.

Holy crap. I would think the raw materials used to build it alone are worth more than $50k.

Lot better Walmart story in Charlotte today.

Rick Perry survives cut on 'Dancing With the Stars,' thanks to voters

Perry will next dance on Monday, shortly before the first presidential debate.

Perry was in last place after the first two episodes

Rick Perry has received more votes in “Dancing With the Stars” than he did in his latest presidential bid.
And I thought we'd have to wait for Flip to give us an update!

A new "beer" offering for Bean and the FRU-Fru Sisters of the Leaf:

Beer just got a caffeinated kick in the beans.

Oskar Blues Brewery and their in-house, coffee addiction-inspired Hotbox Roasters tag-team once again to pair roasted aromas, flavors and a frothy buzz together in Hotbox Coffee Porter.

Hotbox Coffee Porter (6.4% ABV/30 IBUs) has a malted base extracted from English and German roasted and caramel malts, and is comprised of flavors like roasted nuts, crème brûlée, cocoa and caramel. Hotbox Roasters then crashes the party and infuses potent, cold-extracted coffee from Burundian and Ethiopian beans and deals old flavors and aromas of dark plums, chocolate and hints of blueberry.

In one incident this past weekend, the pressure might even have caused one FBS coach to inadvertently "like" a tweet that suggested he should fire his current defensive coordinator. Notre Dame's Brian Kelly told reporters that a staff member who manages his Twitter account mistakenly liked a fan's tweet suggestion that he fire embattled defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.

VanGorder is under intense scrutiny after the Fighting Irish's 1-2 start. The Irish currently rank near the bottom among 128 FBS teams in nearly every defensive statistic. They're 99th in run defense (198.7 yards), 102nd in total defense (439.3 yards), 103rd in pass-efficiency defense (145.38 rating) and tied for 94th in scoring defense (32 points per game).

@ CarolinaDave.....you can plan on coordinating your next visit to SC to attend one (or all) of these lectures....

The first lab meeting tackles the topic of cultural narrative and the body. Participants will be asked to rethink their concept of the physical bodies and, subsequently, their identities. Facilitators will also explore the impact of society and media on these conceptions. Tentative topics to be covered in future sessions include intersectionality and solidarity and diversity and inclusion in the information age.

Although the seeds of these labs were sown in College of Education graduate programs, the labs are open to all Clemson University undergraduate and graduate students who want to participate and become part of the process.

“These labs might change the way participants view the world and those around them,” Phelps-Ward said. “If that happens they won’t just apply these lessons to their careers, but to their lives.”

The College of Education Diversity Curriculum and Pedagogy Lab will be held in Tillman Hall, room 218. Space is limited, and registration is required for the lab. To register, visit http://robinphelpsward.wixsite.com/dcpl. Descriptions, dates and times for the labs are listed below:

Stories of the Flesh: Cultural Narrative and the Body – 7-9 p.m,. Wednesday, Oct. 5
More Complicated and More Connected: Examining Discourses of Identity and Social Justice – 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26

Pretty classic Ecuadorian Habano flavors. I'm getting a bunch of leather and some soap flavors (reminiscent of when I would get my mouth washed out with soap as a kid).

Edit: Ash fell off at about an inch and a quarter.
A little harsh if you smoke it too fast but not bad if you slow it down.

To register, visit http://robinphelpsward.wixsite.com/dcpl (http://robinphelpsward.wixsite.com/dcpl).

Filter Bubbles and Echo Chambers: Diversity and Inclusion in the Information Age – 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30
What a load of crap.

The products at the heart of the recall, coming from the company’s Sylacauga, Alabama plant, were made with a chocolate chip cookie dough
