Today is Saturday, July 30, the 212th day of 2016. There are 154 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 30, 1916, German saboteurs blew up a munitions plant on Black Tom, an island near Jersey City, New Jersey. Although casualties were limited (about a dozen people were killed), the explosion was so huge, it was felt throughout New York City and damaged the Statue of Liberty.

On this date:

In 1619, the first representative assembly in America convened in Jamestown in the Virginia Colony.

In 1729, Baltimore, Maryland, was founded.

In 1864, during the Civil War, Union forces tried to take Petersburg, Virginia, by exploding a gunpowder-laden mine shaft beneath Confederate defense lines; the attack failed.

In 1918, poet Joyce Kilmer, a sergeant in the 165th U.S. Infantry Regiment, was killed during the Second Battle of the Marne in World War I. (Kilmer is remembered for his poem "Trees.")

In 1932, the Summer Olympic Games opened in Los Angeles.

In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill creating a women's auxiliary agency in the Navy known as "Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service" - WAVES for short.

In 1945, the Portland class heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis, having just delivered components of the atomic bomb to Tinian in the Mariana Islands, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine; only 317 out of nearly 1,200 men survived.

In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a measure making "In God We Trust" the national motto, replacing "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one).

In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a measure creating Medicare, which began operating the following year.

In 1975, former Teamsters union president Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in suburban Detroit; although presumed dead, his remains have never been found.

In 1980, Israel's Knesset passed a law reaffirming all of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state.

In 1996, actress Claudette Colbert died in Barbados at age 92.

Ten years ago: Israel agreed to a 48-hour suspension of aerial activity over southern Lebanon after its bombing of a Lebanese village that killed 29 people. Congo held its first multiparty election in four decades (incumbent President Joseph Kabila later won a runoff).

Five years ago: NATO jets bombed three Libyan state TV satellite transmitters in Tripoli, targeting a propaganda tool in Moammar Gadhafi's fight against rebels. Caribbean Airlines Flight 523 from New York, a Boeing 737-800, slid off the end of a rainy runway in Guyana and broke in half; all 163 people on board survived.

One year ago: The Associated Press released the results of a five-month independent study it had commissioned which found that athletes competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro would be swimming and boating in waters so rife with sewage bacteria and viruses, they faced the risk of becoming seriously ill. The Afghan Taliban confirmed the death of longtime leader Mullah Mohammad Omar and appointed his successor, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor. Singer Lynn Anderson, 67, whose strong, husky voice carried her to the top of the charts with "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden," died in Nashville, Tennessee.

Pfc. Manning convicted of espionage

U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning was convicted of espionage and other charges for spilling military secrets to WikiLeaks. Supporters had hailed Manning as a whistleblower, but the U.S. government branded him an anarchist computer hacker and attention-seeking traitor. An Army judge, Col. Denise Lind, deliberated for about 16 hours over three days before reaching her decision. Manning, a 25-year-old Oklahoma native, was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The day after his sentencing he said he felt he was female and wanted to be known as Chelsea Elizabeth Manning.

1956
Congress adds ‘In God We Trust’ as official motto

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a joint resolution of Congress making “In God We Trust” the official motto of the U.S. The motto first appeared on coins in 1864, and a 1908 congressional act made it mandatory for it to be on all coins except the penny and the nickel. It has appeared on all coins since 1938. Eisenhower had signed legislation two years earlier to add the phrase “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus. “In God We Trust” appeared on paper currency for the first time in October 1957.

How ya been doing Dean...?  I haven't had much to say lately.  Mostly just been fighting with my wife.  I mentioned to my doctor that I've been fighting more since my wife has stopped working.  He suggested it would be better for my blood pressure if I just gave in to her, and I should know I'll never win anyway... Silly doctor, I've lost so many fights that surely you would think the odds would be with me to win one eventually...?  :)

That's what they say in Las Vegas all the time.

it's not always about winning. maybe you need to find an activity that will get you out of the house more.
I've always thought about building one of those man cave sheds in the backyard to give us a little break from each other.
Man Cave Gazebo?
you can buy sheds now cheaper than you can build them.
Add some lights, electric outlet, bluetooth speaker(s), comfy chair and a propane space heater and you're good to go.

That's good to know.  There's some really nice sheds on the internet that have been converted to man caves with bars, big screen TV's, fire places, and stripper poles...
Well, you can take it there...guess you could use the stripper pole as an antenna...

I wound up smoking that Tat Especial lancero (in case you hadn't already read that).  If I'm being really picky, the draw wasn't perfect and the burn was affected a tiny bit but the flavors were very good. Probably won't smoke again until Monday. But we'll see.

Watched an episode of Fixer Upper yesterday where the folks paid 50k for the house and put in another 220k into it. I couldn't get that gorgeous of a house here for 270k. Hell, I could barely get just a plot of land for that price.

And that would be because there are few jobs there and even fewer that pay much.

Keep in mind all the beautiful furniture and decorations do not come with that price.

California's the worst. Tiny plot of land with a shack on it goes for half a Mil. No view, shitty neighborhood, miles from water. Cost you another half a Mil to deal with the permits and put something decent on it.

The craziest thing about the CA Homebuyers that come here is they will only buy a brand new house except a few that buy very old houses in yuppie parts of town and redo them.  They will almost never buy a lived in house in the suburbs.

Been there plenty of times and just tons of fine dining but it is highly commieized!    Depends on what you are in the mood for and where you are but a duck club sandwich, duck fat fries and a couple of Pluf Mud beers at the Tatooed Moose are a necessity.  I can give you a list of great places to eat when you go.

Doubt you need any kind of licensing to operate a hot air balloon so any fool with money can buy themselves one.  Think it's alcohol related - BWI?  BUI?

Agree, there is no shortage in Charleston and surrounding area.

My favorite upscale is probably Magnolia's

Then
McCrady's
Circa 1886
Poogan's Porch / Smokehouse (two different sites)
SNOB (Slightly North of Broad)
Husk
Red Drum  (surprised Tex didn't mention this one as it has a Texas influence)
High Cotton

No frills:
Bowens Island
Fat Hen
Roadside Seafood
Leon's Oyster Shop
Tattooed Moose

I discovered some very cold beers in the fridge earlier today. I always knew they were there but the basement fridge is on the fritz so there's no telling what you'll get. I will partake this evening along with previously mentioned smoke. Now I have something to look forward to. Already picked the smoke: Warped La Hacienda.

Why are you asking about Charleston Tony?
Because I might be driving through and spending the night.
There are about 3 decent smoke shops in town as well.

Here are two of my sons two favorites

Husk
Order the Fried Chicken Skins with hot sauce and honey; The Husk Burger, quite possibly the finest example of a hamburger in the South; and a side of skillet cornbread with Allan Benton’s bacon. Oh, and the veggie plate. Honestly, this is the perfect opportunity to #ordereverything.

XIAO BAO BISCUIT
Tucked in an old gas station in Charleston, Xiao Bao Biscuit has given the Peninsula a new take on the lunch counter with their Asian comfort foods, such as Tenri-style ramen (thin, straight noodles in a soy-based broth) with pork belly, kimchi, stewed greens, and a slow-cooked farm egg.
Absolutely the best steaks and chops in Charleston

https://hallschophouse.com

Have not been here but high on Travellin Dave's list

https://magnoliascharleston.com

A must try Lowcountry food establishment

http://hominygrill.com

Excellent choice

http://www.poogansporch.com/#_=_

And I can give you at least a dozen more
Agree, there is no shortage in Charleston and surrounding area.

My favorite upscale is probably Magnolia's

Then
McCrady's
Circa 1886
Poogan's Porch / Smokehouse (two different sites)
SNOB (Slightly North of Broad)
Husk
Red Drum  (surprised Tex didn't mention this one as it has a Texas influence)
High Cotton

No frills:
Bowens Island
Fat Hen
Roadside Seafood
Leon's Oyster Shop
Tattooed Moose
Can't ever list them all because they open more so fast!  Red Drum is actually in Mt Pleasant but it is outstanding, not too kid friendly or wallet friendly though.  Had my 60th birthday party there.

Most of the better places in downtown Charleston are neither very kid friendly or wallet friendly.  But there are a number of good places in Mt Pleasant that are kid friendly and have good food.

Another very good place in Mt Pleasant with a TX Flare.   Sol Southwest Kitchen, fabulous shrimp & Grits using fried grits cakes.  Very kid friendly and not too bad on the wallet.

I think big gonads would weigh you down and that can't be good. You wouldn't want to snag 'em on something while gliding at 120 mph.
