December 29 is...........Pepper Pot Day
Pepper Pot, a thick and spicy soup that is an American staple dish, especially in the southern regions of the United States. What is Pepper Pot? Well, it’s a soup that contains twelve different ingredients. Now that we know the ingredients for the Pepper Pot, let us look into the history of the day named for it, Pepper Pot Day, shall we?
History Of Pepper Pot Day
In the modern world of today, Pepper Pot Soup has many, many variations to it. But the soups true origins began on December 29th of 1777 during the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army had been experiencing an exceptionally harsh winter during the battle of Valley Forge. The soldiers were low on food because the farmers in the area had gone and sold all their supplies to the British Army for cash rather than the weak currency that the Continental soldiers could offer them for their crops. Christopher Ludwick, a baker general of the Continental Army, gathered whatever food he could scrounge together to feed the cold and frail soldiers.
The chef was able to find scraps of tripe, meat, and some peppercorn. He then mixed the ingredients together with some other seasonings and created the hot, thick, and spicy soup we now know as pepper pot soup. It quickly became known as “the soup that won the war.” The soup gave the soldiers the warmth and strength that they needed to push the enemies back through the harsh winter weather.

Debbie Reynolds -- who rose to stardom in "Singin' in the Rain" and quickly became a staple among Hollywood royalty -- died Wednesday as a result of a stroke, TMZ has learned ... just one day after her daughter Carrie Fisher passed away ... this according to her son Todd.
Debbie was rushed to a hospital shortly after 1 PM when someone at the Beverly Hills home of her son, Todd, called 911 to report a possible stroke. We're told Debbie and Todd were making funeral plans for Carrie, who died Tuesday of cardiac arrest.
Debbie famously divorced Eddie Fisher in 1959 after his affair with Elizabeth Taylor. Debbie married 2 more times in 1960 and 1984.
She played iconic roles in "Tammy and the Bachelor" and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" ... for which she earned an Oscar nomination.
Carrie's relationship with Debbie was the focus of Carrie's semi-autobiographical book, "Postcards from the Edge," which was later adapted for the big screen, starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine.
Debbie's survived by her son Todd, who tells us, "She's with Carrie."
She was 84.

Today is Thursday, Dec. 29, the 364th day of 2016. There are two days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Dec. 29, 1916, James Joyce's first novel, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," was first published in book form in New York after being serialized in London.
On this date:
In 1170, Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was slain in Canterbury Cathedral by knights loyal to King Henry II.
In 1808, the 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 1812, during the War of 1812, the American frigate USS Constitution engaged and severely damaged the British frigate HMS Java off Brazil.
In 1845, Texas was admitted as the 28th state.
In 1890, the Wounded Knee massacre took place in South Dakota as an estimated 300 Sioux Indians were killed by U.S. troops sent to disarm them.
In 1934, Japan formally renounced the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922.
In 1940, during World War II, Germany dropped incendiary bombs on London, setting off what came to be known as "The Second Great Fire of London."
In 1957, singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme were married in Las Vegas.
In 1972, Eastern Air Lines Flight 401, a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, crashed into the Florida Everglades near Miami International Airport, killing 101 of the 176 people aboard.
In 1975, a bomb exploded in the main terminal of New York's LaGuardia Airport, killing 11 people (it's never been determined who was responsible).
In 1986, former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan died in Sussex, England, at age 92.
In 1996, guerrilla and government leaders in Guatemala signed an accord ending 36 years of civil conflict. North Korea issued an unprecedented apology for sending a spy submarine into South Korean waters.

Ten years ago: Word reached the United States of the execution of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (because of the time difference, it was the morning of Dec. 30 in Iraq when the hanging took place). In a statement, President George W. Bush called Saddam's execution an important milestone on Iraq's road to democracy. Gerald R. Ford's flag-draped casket was carried into a church in Palm Desert, California, for a public viewing that marked the start of six days of mourning for the former president. More than 400 people died when a crowded Indonesian ferry sank in the Java Sea.
Five years ago: Fed-up voters in Jamaica threw out the ruling party and delivered a landslide triumph to the opposition People's National Party and its leader, former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. The No. 15 Baylor Bears, led by Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, pulled out an incredible Alamo Bowl victory in the highest-scoring regulation bowl game in history, beating the Washington Huskies 67-56 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
One year ago: Belgian authorities announced they had arrested two men and seized military-type uniforms and Islamic State group propaganda in connection with a suspected plot to unleash holiday season attacks against police and celebrated locations in Brussels. Former "Glee" star Mark Salling was arrested in Los Angeles for investigation of possessing child pornography. (Salling has pleaded not guilty.)

Finding the cutest guy in A.A. is like finding the cutest loony in the bin.

The older you get, the easier it is to spot the phonies. And I just think, how unpleasant for them.

I've suffered long enough with the current ones. 3 of them are original to the house (1932) and the other 3 were replaced in the '80s, way before I bought the place, and they're more drafty than the originals.

Looking For Love with Plenty of Fish :o
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Christmas night date turned into a robbery for a man just “looking for love” on the dating website Plenty of Fish, according to the affidavit.
On Dec. 25 Austin Police say Cherice Rachelle Doster, 25, lured the victim by setting up a date on the website. The victim agreed to meet her at the Hunter’s Chase Apartments, just off Pond Springs Road around 9:15 p.m.
Officers say, when the victim arrived, they went into an apartment that the victim described as dirty and bare without any furniture. He sat down with Doster on a blanket in the living room and she told him it would be $150 for “services,” but didn’t specify what services she would provide.
As they were talking another man, Doster said was her husband, walked in from one of the bedrooms and pointed a gun at him. The man shouted at the victim demanding money, a cell phone and keys. Then, police say Doster’s “husband” Theo Demaree, 31, pistol-whipped the victim several times in the head.
The man was eventually able to run out of the front door and flagged people down to call 911.
In the affidavit, the victim described Doster as looking “like maybe she’d had a rough life.” APD responded quickly and tracked the suspects with a K-9 officer

Wonder how rough of a life he's had that he's meeting up with someone on Christmas night and doesn't mind going into the apartment with her if she looks like that?

I just caught up on last nights post and have a Big Double GFY (and you know which kind) for Travellin Dave and Tony!

Dean did not file a Golf Report yesterday and now he is MIA this morning, can it possibly be his balls are glowing in the dark?

Boilche, haven't had that in years. Now I'm craving.

What did I say? That you're a slacker because you were a day late posting about Debbie Reynolds? Well in that case, I gladly accept your good wishes.

It was the only obvious "soft" spot on the floor. The kids would use it as a springboard to jump on the bed. The floors were under carpeting when I bought the place, 12 years ago, and I assumed they were the original floors to the house.

Looks like 3/8" pre-finished engineered flooring? Looks like someone ran it over a bad spot in the floor without fixing it first, it's not thick enough to get away with that
It was the only obvious "soft" spot on the floor. The kids would use it as a springboard to jump on the bed. The floors were under carpeting when I bought the place, 12 years ago, and I assumed they were the original floors to the house.
That is definitely not 1932 flooring, hope the seller lubed you.

Received my El Osos last night, very quick delivery. I have to go and unpack them, they arrived while we were out seeing Rogue One
How'd you enjoy it?
I thought it was excellent, a bit strange not having any characters you'll see again. The Vader part was really cool at the end
SPOILER!

Yeah, that was unexpected and completely badass.
For sure, so was the modern take on the power of the Death Star

I've got my oldest watching the prequels right now. Watched Phantom Menace on Tuesday, the Jar Jar parts are still nearly unwatchable. I thought maybe time would soften those blows, but no such luck. Of course, she loved him, because she's 10. She even wanted to know if he was in 2. I said he was, but was glad it was only about 60 seconds worth.

Good to know. No promises were made... Just assumptions. I guess the old adage still holds true.

I was afraid of that. Two years ago, it was in your face and I received complaints that it was annoying to have it at the top of each page. Plus it sucks that it doesn't work via Tapatalk. Last year, I was more subtle but received less votes. Extended it to 3 days this year to try and catch more people.

original flooring was probably 3/4" pine that previous owners had torn out and contractor probably told them they didn't need a subfloor. quick fix? re-floor over it using it as the subfloor.

Shotgun Offense: Eagles QB Wentz Gives His Linemen Christmas Guns
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz gave his offensive linemen guns as gifts for Christmas, adding new meaning to the shotgun formation.
Wentz, an avid hunter, purchased the Baretta shotguns that retail for about $2,000 each for his linemen, ESPN reported. The rookie quarterback even personalized the weapons, engraving each player's number on the butt of his weapon.

Oh so typical these days, fuk'n Nook had been playing music there for many years before this hotel was built a year ago. Just like the assholes that buy houses at the end of a commercial airport runway then demand they move the airport.
AUSTIN, Tex. (KEYE) - The Westin in Downtown Austin has filed a lawsuit against the adjacent Nook Amphitheater and is seeking an injunction on the venue, claiming loud outdoor music being played into the early hours of the morning is harming their business.
The amphitheater is located within the boundaries of what is considered one the city's historic music districts. Sixth Street is often cited as a well-known attraction for live music and entertainment. Austin itself is widely considered the "live music capital of the world." The hotel, which is located on 5th Street, is separated from the music venue by only an alley
An extra $1 million was spent on the Westin during its initial construction to fortify windows and drywall, in order to prevent the disturbance of downtown music.
The company claims it has since spent and additional $1 million to block out music, but there is nothing on the market that can block the bass coming from the Nook's open air venue.
Representatives for the Westin used a sound meter to test the Nook's equipment before building the hotel, and Nook co-owner Stephen Condon says the equipment hasn't changed since.
"We let them inside. We let them upstairs, so they're well aware of what they were getting into, and the sound system that they tested is the exact same sound system we have now," said Condon

That's the beauty. I made it so that you can always go back and change it. The answers aren't locked until the survey ends. I didn't want anyone to be able to see the results until the end either so as not to be influenced.

Poll should be amended to clarify whether money is a factor. When I took the poll I pretended it wasn't. But in reality my answers would change based on affordability.

That sucks.
Ouch.
Professionally speaking I don't think a "weak or a week" board is the problem I believe the lack of adequate substructure for the flooring type is the problem. Especially when one considers the static load of Tony on a single chair leg - YIKES!
Not to mention that he might have been getting a New Year's "ride" in that chair. Surprised all four legs didn't punch.
Oh, ....and what is a week board?
Ahhh, the peanut gallery has rejoined us. I knew I should have gone back and edited.
Yea, kids drove up to the City to have lunch with the hypocrite, so I have some quiet time.
I was in the City yesterday and traffic was horrible.
Yea, I'm more than a little concerned about them having to drive in with the babies, but their choice.
-
Boilche, haven't had that in years. Now I'm craving.
It was great. She makes it a lot.
pm me the recipe and what cut of meat does she use? I'm making brisket tonight, not so Cuban
That's a tall order. Every time she tries to give me a recipe, it's a production. I'll see what I can do.
both goya and food network have recipes, one use a chorizo stuffed eye round, that is trussed. must marinate for 4 to 24 hours first.
I think you're right about the eye round, but I'll make certain.

@Flip: I amended the instructions for the survey. If you were "other" kindly post the specifics on that thread?
Disregard Deano, he marches to his own drummer.

i picked three other cigars anyway... you guys are changing my mind.
Poll should be amended to clarify whether money is a factor. When I took the poll I pretended it wasn't. But in reality my answers would change based on affordability.
It's pretty clear. If you could only choose 4 from which to smoke next year, what would they be? Like the bible, it's up to interpretation. Don't let me have to hold your hand like a millennial. Sheesh.
Probably better just stick with one poll per year, some people will make it far too difficult.
