Today is Thursday, Oct. 6, the 280th day of 2016. There are 86 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Oct. 6, 1976, President Gerald R. Ford, in his second presidential debate with Democrat Jimmy Carter, asserted that there was "no Soviet domination of eastern Europe." (Ford later conceded such was not the case.)
On this date:
In 1683, thirteen families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in Philadelphia to begin Germantown, one of America's oldest settlements.
In 1884, the Naval War College was established in Newport, Rhode Island.
In 1891, Charles Stewart Parnell, the "Uncrowned King of Ireland," died in Brighton, Sussex, England.
In 1927, the era of talking pictures arrived with the opening of "The Jazz Singer" starring Al Jolson, a movie featuring both silent and sound-synchronized sequences.
In 1939, in a speech to the Reichstag, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler spoke of his plans to reorder the ethnic layout of Europe - a plan which would entail settling the "Jewish problem."
In 1949, U.S.-born Iva Toguri D'Aquino, convicted of treason for being Japanese wartime broadcaster "Tokyo Rose," was sentenced in San Francisco to 10 years in prison (she ended up serving more than six).
In 1958, the nuclear submarine USS Seawolf surfaced after spending 60 days submerged.
In 1960, the historical drama "Spartacus," starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Stanley Kubrick, had its world premiere in New York.
In 1973, war erupted in the Middle East as Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel during the Yom Kippur holiday. (Israel, initially caught off-guard, suffered heavy losses before rebounding and pushing back the Arab forces before a cease-fire finally took hold in the nearly three-week conflict.)
In 1979, Pope John Paul II, on a week-long U.S. tour, became the first pontiff to visit the White House, where he was received by President Jimmy Carter.
In 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was shot to death by extremists while reviewing a military parade.
In 1989, actress Bette Davis died in Neuilly-sur-Seine (nu-yee-sur-sehn), France, at age 81.
Ten years ago: The U.N. Security Council adopted a statement warning North Korea of unspecified consequences if it carried out a nuclear test. Petty Officer 3rd Class Melson J. Bacos, a Navy medic, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and conspiracy, telling his court-martial at Camp Pendleton, California, that he stood and watched as seven members of a Marine squadron murdered an innocent Iraqi civilian. (Bacos was sentenced to a year in military prison and was released two months early; the Marines were convicted or pleaded guilty in the killing.)
Five years ago: In a poor quality audio recording, a voice identified as that of Moammar Gadhafi called on Libyans to take to the streets and wage a campaign of civil disobedience against the country's new leader. The Nobel Prize in literature was awarded to psychologist Tomas Transtromer, Sweden's most famous poet. Actress Diane Cilento, 78, died in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
One year ago: Gen. John F. Campbell, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, recommended before Congress that President Barack Obama revise his plan to cut the current U.S. force of 9,800 and keep more than 1,000 U.S. troops in the country beyond 2016. Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur McDonald of Canada won the Nobel Prize in physics for key discoveries about neutrinos, a cosmic particle that whizzes through space at nearly the speed of light, passing easily through Earth and even people's bodies. Convicted killer Juan Martin Garcia was executed by Texas for fatally shooting another man in a robbery that yielded just $8. Singer Billy Joe Royal, 73, who'd popularized the song "Down in the Boondocks" and crossed over into country music, died in Morehead City, North Carolina.

Good morning boys, Mets shit the bed last night. My biggest complaint is their approach at the plate, especially early. They needed to make Bumgarner work and drive up his pitch count to get him out of the game. His performance was exactly what I was fearful of

What happened to Pokémon Joe? Clowns ran him out of town or what?

Austin ranks No. 2 on ‘best places people are moving to’ US News list
According to a recent list by U.S. News and World Report, Austin is the city with the second-highest net migration between the years 2010 and 2014. In compiling the list U.S. News looked at census data for the 100 largest metro areas in the nation and the difference between the number of people who moved to and from a given city. Austin also ranked No. 2 on the media company’s “Best Places to Live in 2016” list.
Austin isn’t alone in representing the state of Texas on the list, however. Houston and San Antonio both made the top 10, while Dallas was ranked among the top 20 cities.
Austin metro area now surpasses 2 million residents
So which city has a higher net migration rate than Austin’s 8.86 percent? Fort Myers, Florida, it turns out, is filled with people who aren’t from there. The city has experienced nearly 9.4 percent population growth from net migration between 2010 and 2014 and is a popular spot for retirees. With a population of less than half that of Austin’s, however, the city’s growth is occurring on a smaller scale.

No, Dean's mistakes offering entertainment are not selfish of us.

@Scott: Truly sorry about the results of last night's game. I completely agree with your assessment. I was rooting for 'em but at this point I'm going against my American League and hoping the Cubbies take it all.

short and interesting meeting with FEMA, State of Florida Highway Engineer, Levy County Manager, Inglis and Yankeetown Supers, Fire Chief, and Duke Energy official. my idea of Assessment Team apparently offended the locals with the way they've always done things. was called a POS NYer who ought to go back north, and a few other unkind words. I refused to get into a pissing match and calmly as I could explained my plan. apparently they cater to the 'rich' people first, and let the 'poor' wait. I did have Duke Energy, the FD, and the State on my side, but looks like I will ride a desk inputting updates and answering phones as needed.

Truth is, that is part of the problem - nobody knows so everybody thinks they are. They contract some of us out to FEMA and loan us to the State DOT's for hurricanes and I have done plenty of them, it is a giant clusterfuck Brownie! I refuse to do it anymore after the Rita fiasco.

Dean, Dean, Dean. One thing those who grew up in the South do not appreciate is yankees and Californians leaving their fk'd up states only to tell their new neighbors things should be done like they did them from whence they came. The fuckin' hicks just don't like hearing that.

short and interesting meeting with FEMA, State of Florida Highway Engineer, Levy County Manager, Inglis and Yankeetown Supers, Fire Chief, and Duke Energy official. my idea of Assessment Team apparently offended the locals with the way they've always done things. was called a POS NYer who ought to go back north, and a few other unkind words. I refused to get into a pissing match and calmly as I could explained my plan. apparently they cater to the 'rich' people first, and let the 'poor' wait. I did have Duke Energy, the FD, and the State on my side, but looks like I will ride a desk inputting updates and answering phones as needed.
So who has last say in this clusterf*ck?
Truth is, that is part of the problem - nobody knows so everybody thinks they are. They contract some of us out to FEMA and loan us to the State DOT's for hurricanes and I have done plenty of them, it is a giant clusterfuck Brownie! I refuse to do it anymore after the Rita fiasco.
the local State Residencies and Duke Energy use assessment teams. the Township officials, commissioners, supers, claim autonomy, that they know what's best for their 'peoples'. it will be very interesting tomorrow morning. I just have to remember to keep my mouth shut and smile a lot.
fuckin' hicks.
Dean, Dean, Dean. One thing those who grew up on the South do not appreciate is yankees and Californians leaving their fk'd up states only to tell their new neighbors things should be done like they did them from whence they came. The fuckin' hicks just don't like hearing that.
Moving from state-state many times with my job I have learned - new location 101 - they don't give a fuk what you did in NY, TX or CA.............

If I were you, and pack up you and whatever ladies you need to keep you company and head out of there, let them fend for themselves.
If I were you I would quit volunteering and limit my activities to banging old women, kayaking and smoking cigars.
Not necessarily in that order.

Ya know Dave, there may be some real deals on property on the Carolina coast after this weekend.
-
I did FEMA work back in Hurricane Charlie when I lived in SC. Showed up checked in with my FEMA ID Badge and they seized my work laptop saying I could not bring in personal property to their facility and it had to be inspected..... One prompt GFY, went back to my office and told them where their laptop was...... took a while for them to get it back from the dumbfuk's. Great Job Brownie!

Maybe but really does not look that way to me, there will likely be some pissed off people that were told to evacuate then next time there is a real storm you can buy property cheap at their estate sales..

short and interesting meeting with FEMA, State of Florida Highway Engineer, Levy County Manager, Inglis and Yankeetown Supers, Fire Chief, and Duke Energy official. my idea of Assessment Team apparently offended the locals with the way they've always done things. was called a POS NYer who ought to go back north, and a few other unkind words.
One thing those who grew up in the South do not appreciate is yankees and Californians leaving their fk'd up states only to tell their new neighbors things should be done like they did them from whence they came. The fuckin' hicks just don't like hearing that.

I am watching hurricane coverage on a local Miami TV Station, keeping an eye out for Dean to come kayaking by for a rescue.
Probably better watch the radar so you can grab him of he comes flying by.
Hopefully he's tethered to the patio foundation.

October 6 is … Come and Take It Day
Yeah, I hear tell there's some folks down there in Texas who thought they'd invented the phrase and got all uptight that it had been "stolen" by gun nuts. Seems they hadn't been eddicated about Thermopylae.
Morning, muchachos.
So the Greeks had a cannon loaned to them by the Persians and refused to give it back? Got it.

If I were you, and pack up you and whatever ladies you need to keep you company and head out of there, let them fend for themselves.
If I were you I would quit volunteering and limit my activities to banging old women, kayaking and smoking cigars.
We'll have to work up a fairly different list for CarolinaDave...
Already have the list made and no volunteering on it I can tell you that. Volunteering will get your ass in an infantry battalion carrying ammo with nothing to put it in.
Don't imagine any meetings on your list, either.
Next planned meeting after I retire will be a meeting with my maker.
That's planned?

@Scott: Truly sorry about the results of last night's game. I completely agree with your assessment. I was rooting for 'em but at this point I'm going against my American League and hoping the Cubbies take it all.
No worries, I wanted to see them make the next round but had no delusions of success with all of their injuries. I'm rooting for a Red Sox/Cubs series now
I can NEVER root for the bosox. I'd much rather see Cleveland.

Got a new La Bomba Claro which is a different formulation (similar to the Smoke Inn exclusive Bunker Buster), there is the Sake Bomb and Warhead III, but couldn't find a reformulation of the regular La Bomba. Just old and feeble I guess.

I don't remember seeing any mention of the La Bomba series being reformulate (not that that means it didn't happen). Maybe offering La Bomba is new to Egars? Those "change ups" could be the new-er vitolas as mentioned. No telling.
I do remember a re-banding/re-vamping announcement on HalfWheel
Got a new La Bomba Claro which is a different formulation (similar to the Smoke Inn exclusive Bunker Buster), there is the Sake Bomb and Warhead III, but couldn't find a reformulation of the regular La Bomba. Just old and feeble I guess.
Claro is a Connie isn't it?
-
This is from an Egars email advertisement, sounds like they have changed the LaBomba formula or something because nothing new about the sizes except the Sake Bomb and Nuclear are a bit newer..
601 La Bomba
New to our inventory is 4 sticks from 601! After a few change ups the 601 La Bomba continues to impress. With hints of Sweet Cocoa and Campfire tones. The perfect blend to get your night started off with a BANG!
Available in 4 sizes:
Sake Bomb - 4 1/2 42
Napalm - 5 x 52
Atom - 5 1/2 x 46
Nuclear - 6 x 50

It's a Habano Claro from Nicaragua.
Medium to Rosado complexion basing it on the Bunker Busters I've had.
Can't say I fully understand as it does have Claro in the name, but I understood that term to be equivalent to Candela. Then again I always thought a robusto was 5.0 x 50 and a toro 6.0 x 50.

Federal Government Spends Billions on PR
Federal agencies spend north of $1 billion each year on public relations to influence the American people, according to a new government report.
So they are spending a billion of our tax dollars to let us know
we should be happy they are taking all these taxes from us? 8)
Only in America... hello boys, had an early meeting today.

I bought 5 lonsdales pretty cheap on the famous bid just to try and after 2 I am rather fond of them, smoother and a tad lighter than the Cuarenta.

short and interesting meeting with FEMA, State of Florida Highway Engineer, Levy County Manager, Inglis and Yankeetown Supers, Fire Chief, and Duke Energy official. my idea of Assessment Team apparently offended the locals with the way they've always done things. was called a POS NYer who ought to go back north, and a few other unkind words.
Well fuk yeah it is planned just does not have a date attached, best I can figure it is planned for everybody - including you!
I don't want to achieve immortality by doing something great,
