September 22 is........ National Ice Cream Cone Day

Ice Cream Cone Day seeks to draw attention to the invention of the ice cream cone; an important, yet sadly often overlooked, invention that allows people to enjoy delicious ice cream combined with a handily portable and edible wafer cone, often whilst out and about. Just imagine what the world would look like without an ice cream cone. No ’99s, ice cream would have to be eaten with a bowl, and ice lollies would dominate!

September 22 is also..........Hobbit Day

September 22nd is the Birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular Middle Earth Cycle books (The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings respectively) in which Hobbits, typically between two and four feet tall and nothing like your usual ‘hero’, accomplish great feats and amazing acts of courage. It is in honour of these creatures and those acts that the day is celebrated with events not unlike the birthday party described in the beginning of “The Fellowship of the Ring”.

In the United States Hobbit Day has gained some measure of legal dignity due to the elected officials who support the day and the goals of the American Tolkien Society. The Day has also attracted Bipartisan Support from places as the U.S. County Courthouse, to the White House, to the U.S. Capitol.

History
A separate event to Tolkien Week (although the Week will always fall over Hobbit Day, running Sunday to Saturday), Hobbit Day is perhaps the oldest running day celebrated by fans. There is some debate on the date that Hobbit Day should be celebrated on, due to the differences in the Gregorian and Shire calendars. Tolkien once said that the Shire calendar is ahead by about ten days depending on the month. A suggested alternative date by hardcore fans is September 14th. Although the day was not officially designated until 1978 and has had many names and designations, it has been celebrated since 1973, shortly after J.R.R. Tolkien died on September 2nd of that year.

Observances
Fans celebrate by anything from going barefoot all day and having seven meals, to Literary discussions and readings, Lord Of The Rings Movie Marathons, and throwing parties in honour of the ‘Long Awaited Party’ at the start of the Fellowship Of The Ring with events such as feasts, games, costumes and fireworks.

Today is Thursday, Sept. 22, the 266th day of 2016. There are 100 days left in the year. Autumn arrives at 10:21 a.m. Eastern time.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Sept. 22, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, Capt. Nathan Hale, 21, was hanged as a spy by the British in New York.

On this date:

In 1792, the first French Republic was proclaimed.

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all slaves in rebel states should be free as of Jan. 1, 1863.

In 1911, pitcher Cy Young, 44, gained his 511th and final career victory as he hurled a 1-0 shutout for the Boston Rustlers against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field.

In 1927, Gene Tunney successfully defended his heavyweight boxing title against Jack Dempsey in the famous "long-count" fight in Chicago.

In 1938, the musical comedy revue "Hellzapoppin'," starring Ole (OH'-lee) Olsen and Chic Johnson, began a three-year run on Broadway.

In 1949, the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb.

In 1950, Omar N. Bradley was promoted to the rank of five-star general, joining an elite group that included Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, George C. Marshall and Henry H. "Hap" Arnold.

In 1964, the musical "Fiddler on the Roof," starring Zero Mostel, opened on Broadway, beginning a run of 3,242 performances. The secret agent series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, premiered on NBC-TV.

In 1975, Sara Jane Moore attempted to shoot President Gerald R. Ford outside a San Francisco hotel, but missed. (Moore served 32 years in prison before being paroled on Dec. 31, 2007.)

In 1985, rock and country music artists participated in "Farm Aid," a concert staged in Champaign, Illinois, to help the nation's farmers.

In 1991, the London newspaper The Mail published an interview with former intelligence agent John Cairncross, who admitted being the "fifth man" in the Soviet Union's notorious British spy ring.

In 1996, actress-singer Dorothy Lamour died at her North Hollywood home at age 81.

Ten years ago: A high-speed maglev train crashed in northwestern Germany, killing 23 people in the first fatal wreck involving the high-tech system. Three Christian militants were executed in Indonesia for leading attacks on Muslims in May 2000 that left at least 70 people dead. Hewlett-Packard Co. Chairwoman Patricia Dunn resigned in the wake of the company's ill-fated investigation of boardroom media leaks. Actor Edward Albert died in Malibu, California, at age 55.

Five years ago: A group of European researchers at the world's biggest physics lab in Switzerland claimed to have measured a subatomic particle, a neutrino, traveling faster than the speed of light, a finding that challenged Einstein's theory of relativity (however, the results were refuted by other scientists). American diplomats led a walkout at the U.N. General Assembly as Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) fiercely attacked the United States and major West European nations as "arrogant powers" ruled by greed and eager for military adventurism. Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Germany on his first state visit to his homeland.

One year ago: Pope Francis arrived from Cuba on the first visit of his life to the United States; President Barack Obama, his wife and daughters personally welcomed the pontiff at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington. Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) arrived in Seattle for a three-day visit before heading to Washington. Volkswagen AG acknowledged putting emissions-cheating software in millions of vehicles worldwide. Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, 90, died in West Caldwell, New Jersey.

Potentially heavy rain, significant cool-down just days away

Temperatures stay hotter than average on this first day of fall, but big changes are only three days away.

The fine is $500 + court costs so many do not just pay-the-fine and move on.  Conviction rate is very low.

One little quirk that gets them is the officer who signs the ticket must also have observed an illegal activity prior to stopping the car so a cop on a bus radioing to a cop on a motorcycle will not hold water if they go to court.  Also, going to court will tie up at least two cops for a good while along with their in-car computer so most are quietly settled with the prosecutors office at a significant cut rate.

WalMart was on the first night but they did loot a Flemings Steak Restaurant and broke windows in the Omni and Ritz Carlton Hotels.  Uptown is a very high-tone area with a lot of nice restaurants and bars. Yuppieville!  Sad reminder for me,  Warden and I lived in SC then and were celebrating our anniversary in Uptown Charlotte the night my father died.

Cops on a city bus coordinating motorcycles chasing people down on I-35 is a very dangerous menace too.

Frequent Sex Is Good For Older Women. Men, Not So Much.
Older men who enjoy sex too much or too often are at higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
Older women who have robust sex lives tend to have lower blood pressure and don’t suffer a single ill health effect from their pleasurable bedroom activities. Older men, on the other hand, well, that’s a different story.
A study found that men aged 57 to 85 who indulged in sexual activity once a week or more doubled their risk of heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular conditions compared with men who went without. It gets worse: The men who enjoyed sex the most were more likely to suffer heart conditions than those who were not so bothered.

So you are as good as dead while Tony will live forever. :o

I will also add that if Warden's thought this at all to be true they would be fuk'n our brains out 7 days a week and get it over with quick, you know the Obama Care Plan - Die Soon!

This is one crack down I can support.  Douchebags on their phones while behind the wheel are a menace.
Cops on a city bus coordinating motorcycles chasing people down on I-35 is a very dangerous menace too.

And that law has not reduced distracted driving one tiny bit either.  Fuk'n Lakeway has the same law and has not done doodly crap their either other than generate revenue for the Kangaroo Court.
Isn't "chasing" down people on I-35 a bit of an oxymoron?  They could just have cops standing on the side of the road and walking up to the cars at normal I-35 speeds.

So, now we should be looking forward to lower priced cigars next year! ::)

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has released its calculations for user fees for tobacco products for 2017 and the cigar industry will owe less than expected. User fees are paid to FDA to fund the agency’s operations, specifically the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP). In total, tobacco companies will pay $635 million in user fees next year to fund CTP, something that was already known. What’s changed is how much each company will owe. User fees are to be paid by six different types of tobacco products: cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, cigars and pipe tobacco. Because FDA only recently started regulating cigars and pipe tobacco, the other four categories have been responsible for funding the total user fee bill in previous years, something that will change in 2017. Each year, the agency calculates how much each product category owes based on the percentage of excise taxes paid by each category. For cigars, these excise taxes are commonly known as SCHIP. In 2015, $573.6 million worth of excise taxes were paid by cigars. This is actually a 10.5 percent reduction compared to 2014 when the excise tax bill was $641.2 million

There were actually several very nice offers on the Jam yesterday and they were even further enhanced by the extra 20% off!
The 20% made the four kicks robustos look totally different
For sure, used that opportunity to ship some to my son and some to myself.
Nice, I finally bought some cracker crumbs
Have you tried them?

I caught a 5er on an Auction add-on for less than $10. I thought they were quite good. Not Tat PCR "good", but pretty close considering the price difference/point. I'd get more for a small smoke option.
I'd say they're as good considering the difference in wrapper.

Pretty damn sad state of affairs!  (New York City)

It’s no longer safe for the city’s senior citizens to go outside

They’re robbed as they walk their dogs, go on moonlit strolls or sit waiting for buses.

They’re robbed as they lean on their canes or sit in their wheelchairs. In some cases, they’re shoved to the ground and even kicked while they’re down.

More than once a day on average this year, someone over the age of 65 was mugged somewhere in New York City. And the numbers are up, particularly in the Bronx and Manhattan.

City seniors know they are vulnerable — and given the choice between safety and freedom, they’re choosing the former, limiting what they do and where they go in order to keep safe.

White House staffer's email hacked revealing secret service plans, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton's private schedules, secret service plans,  and even Michelle Obama's PASSPORT

The email of a White House staff member has been hacked by DC Leaks, revealing what the group claims is Michelle Obama's passport.

In addition to the staffer's correspondence with other White House workers, the emails also reveal detailed schedules for members of the Secret Service, the First Lady and Vice President Joe Biden.

The young staffer also appears to be heavily involved in organizing events for Hillary Clinton.

Travellin Dave has a game to watch tonight.

Clemson(5) with a 3-0 record vs Georgia Tech (unranked) with a 3-0 record

Clemson -9.5 points

ESPN @ 7:30 ET
Think I'd take Clemson covering that spread if I was a betting man.
The way football is going this year I would no doubt take the points!

All the frat boys downtown seem to be pretty pumped up for this one. Running the triple option, Tech may throw 1 pass... maybe. lol

Georgia Tech has been a jinx for Clemson over the past decade or two, especially in Atlanta (where we haven't won since 2003).  With that said, I think the offense has gotten on track and the defense has been solid against their O for the past few years.  I would be comfortable with 7, but not 9.5.

May pair with a box of the Atoms... although I'm supposed to be saving for a NJDave Warped recommendation

QB is actually a much better passer than folks give him credit for.  I say we do a decent job plugging up the run, so they will have to defer to pass more than usual.

The early issues with the offense were timing and dropsies related.  Both were significantly improved last game.  True, defense was not up to standard, but that improvement should carry through.

It's been a Cuban cigar day. Had a Saint Luis Rey earlier. The nub you see in the ashtray is an H.Upmann Limited Edicion 2009 and it is fantastic.

say a video of a 15 girl get pepper sprayed after she ran her bicycle into a car and fought the cops every step of the way. she needed a good ass whipping years ago.
Don King dropped the N word and everybody is up in arms because a few people smiled and smirked, including Don King.
