Sam Adams releases $200 beer that's illegal in 12 state

It can be tough to find the perfect holiday gift for the beer snob in your life, but Samuel Adams is making it a little easier this year.

The brewery announced in late October the release of its 2017 Utopias line. Sam Adams releases a batch every two years, according to Fortune.com, and the most recent creation is a doozy.

It has a whopping 28% ABV (that's alcohol by volume), making it illegal in 12 states – but not in Connecticut! It also carries a $199 price tag, but comes in a fancy bottle and is meant to be savored, not chugged.

Today is Friday, Nov. 3, the 307th day of 2017.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Nov. 3, 1900, the first major U.S. automobile show opened at New York’s Madison Square Garden under the auspices of the Automobile Club of America.

On this date:

In 1839, the first Opium War between China and Britain broke out.

In 1903, Panama proclaimed its independence from Colombia.

In 1911, the Chevrolet Motor Car Co. was founded in Detroit by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. (The company was acquired by General Motors in 1918.)

In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt won a landslide election victory over Republican challenger Alfred “Alf” Landon.

In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, the second manmade satellite, into orbit; on board was a dog named Laika (LY’-kah), who was sacrificed in the experiment.

In 1960, the Meredith Willson musical “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” opened on Broadway with Tammy Grimes in the title role.

In 1961, Burmese diplomat U Thant (oo thahnt) was appointed acting U.N. Secretary-General following the death of Dag Hammarskjold (dahg HAWM’-ahr-shoold). President John F. Kennedy established the U.S. Agency for International Development.

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson soundly defeated Republican Barry Goldwater to win a White House term in his own right.

In 1970, Salvador Allende (ah-YEN’-day) was inaugurated as president of Chile.

In 1979, five Communist Workers Party members were killed in a clash with heavily armed Ku Klux Klansmen and neo-Nazis during an anti-Klan protest in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In 1986, the Iran-Contra affair came to light as Ash-Shiraa, a pro-Syrian Lebanese magazine, first broke the story of U.S. arms sales to Iran.

In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton was elected the 42nd president of the United States, defeating President George H.W. Bush. In Illinois, Democrat Carol Moseley-Braun became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

Ten years ago: Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency in Pakistan. United Auto Workers agreed to a tentative contract with Ford Motor Co. Two astronauts conducted a successful spacewalk to save a ripped solar wing on the international space station.

Five years ago: The lights came back on in lower Manhattan to the relief of residents who’d been plunged into darkness for nearly five days by Superstorm Sandy, but there was deepening resentment in the city’s outer boroughs and suburbs over a continued lack of power and maddening gas shortages. New York’s newly relocated NBA team, the former New Jersey Nets, hosted the first regular-season game by a major sports team in Brooklyn since the Dodgers left in 1957; the Brooklyn Nets beat the Toronto Raptors 107-100.

One year ago: Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine delivered a speech entirely in Spanish as he addressed a small crowd in a largely Hispanic area of Phoenix as part of Hillary Clinton’s push into traditionally Republican Arizona. China’s plans for a permanent space station remained firmly on track with the successful launch of its new heavy-lift Long March 5 rocket.

Based on previous banter comments, I think the gubmint folks here would be the First ones to agree with that (at least as far as management is concerned).

Finally went back to sleep for an hour anyway.
Must be made possible by the comfort provided by your contractor
Well I do have the comfort of knowing he has not FUCT anything up since Monday.
Hey, that's something
Plus if you call Geico you could save up to 15% on your car insurance. There's that.

For a cold?  Nah.  It's unpleasant, but not remotely the worst bug I've ever had.  And it isn't the flu.  So all the doctor will do is say, "Yep, you got a virus." Then he'll prescribe antibiotics I don't need, just because he can, and the insurance company will hit me for $175 because I have a high deductable.  No thanks.  This is the crud, you treat it with homemade chicken soup and Alka-Seltzer cold medicine, and I've got stocks of both. ;-)

Is it me or is the frequency with which one sees two people sharing a meal buried in their phones just sad.
Breaks my heart when it's obviously a parent and child.
/I agree and that is a part of problems in our society
Afternoon,  Short Stack.  Agreed, but even scarier is the impact in 10-20 years.
/That time would put me close to 90 so I will let you and SC Dave deal with it, Afternoon SC Dave
Bean maybe but not likely me
Yeah, we'll see.  Short Stack will probably out live us both.
I certainly would not rule that out!
/If you knew my history you would say no way,I didn’t get married until 53 and owned a bar when I was 35  that should give a hint I was not real smart about healthy life style
Like any of us are following the healthy life style advice.  Should we start a pool?
Deadpool on the banter?  That should liven things up.
Nice one, O'HenryDave.

I think the whole of the NFL is sad about this.  A bright spot in a rather divisive and boring season that captured the attention of many.

PORTLAND, Texas (KXAN) — Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, best known for his role in La Bamba, was arrested near Corpus Christi early Friday morning accused of driving while intoxicated.

And this one is down Dean's way

A 53-year old woman named Donna Byrne raised some eyebrows as she rode a horse down the middle of a Polk County road.

Deputies showed up to check things out after a passerby reported that Byrne appeared confused and possibly in danger as she rode the horse on Combee Road near North Crystal Lake Road in Lakeland, an arrest affidavit said.

Police reigned Byrne in, and noted she smelled like alcohol, had red watery eyes, and staggered when she tried to walk. A field sobriety test was conducted, and she was arrested for DUI.
Byrne provided breath samples of .157 and .161. A breath alcohol level of .08 is the legal limit in Florida, reports Patch.

Boduke, the horse, was hitched to a deputy’s patrol car and ate grass until being taken to the Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control livestock facility, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Bryne was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and animal neglect, a misdemeanor. Authorities said she charged with animal neglect because she did not provide proper protection for the horse, which she put in jeopardy of being injured or killed.

How is she guilty of DUI riding a horse?  Gonna have to research that statute.

He played Ritchie Valens in the biopic La Bamba, named after the song that was Valens' biggest hit.  Valens died in the airplane with Buddy Holly and J.P. Richardson
