It's Tuesday again! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 17, the 17th day of 2017. There are 348 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 17, 1917, Denmark ceded the Virgin Islands to the United States for $25 million.

On this date:

In 1893, the 19th president of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes, died in Fremont, Ohio, at age 70. Hawaii's monarchy was overthrown as a group of businessmen and sugar planters forced Queen Lili'uokalani (lee-LEE'-oo-oh-kah-LAH'-nee) to abdicate.

In 1929, the cartoon character Popeye the Sailor made his debut in the "Thimble Theatre" comic strip.

In 1945, Soviet and Polish forces liberated Warsaw during World War II; Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, credited with saving tens of thousands of Jews, disappeared in Hungary while in Soviet custody.

In 1946, the United Nations Security Council held its first meeting, in London.

In 1950, the Great Brink's Robbery took place as seven masked men held up a Brink's garage in Boston, stealing $1.2 million in cash and $1.5 million in checks and money orders. (Although the entire gang was caught, only part of the loot was recovered.)

In 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered his farewell address in which he warned against "the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."

In 1966, a U.S. Air Force B-52 carrying four unarmed hydrogen bombs crashed on the Spanish coast. (Three of the bombs were quickly recovered, but the fourth wasn't recovered until April.) The Simon & Garfunkel album "Sounds of Silence" was released by Columbia Records.

In 1977, convicted murderer Gary Gilmore, 36, was shot by a firing squad at Utah State Prison in the first U.S. execution in a decade.

In 1984, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc., ruled 5-4 that the use of home video cassette recorders to tape television programs for private viewing did not violate federal copyright laws.

In 1987, hundreds of Ku Klux Klan members and supporters disrupted a "brotherhood anti-intimidation march" through all-white Forsyth County, Georgia.

In 1995, more than 6,000 people were killed when an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 devastated the city of Kobe (koh-bay), Japan.

In 1997, a court in Ireland granted the first divorce in the Roman Catholic country's history.

Ten years ago: A year after disclosure of a domestic spying program that President George W. Bush maintained was within his authority to operate, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced the administration had shifted its position and would seek the approval of an independent panel of federal judges. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, saying the world was nudging closer to nuclear or environmental apocalypse, moved the hands of its symbolic Doomsday Clock two minutes nearer to midnight, from 11:53 to 11:55 p.m. Pulitzer Prize-winning satirist Art Buchwald died in Washington, D.C., at age 81.

Five years ago: Italian officials released a recording of a furious Coast Guard officer, Capt. Gregorio De Falco, demanding that Capt. Francesco Schettino (frahn-CHEHS'-koh skeh-TEE'-noh), commander of the grounded Costa Concordia, re-board the ship to direct its evacuation after the vessel rammed into a reef on Jan. 13. (Schettino can be heard resisting the order, making excuses that it was dark and that the ship was listing.) Johnny Otis, the "godfather of rhythm and blues" who wrote and recorded the R&B classic "Willie and the Hand Jive," died in Los Angeles at age 90.

One year ago: Ahead of the Iowa caucuses, Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders engaged in their most contentious debate to date, tangling repeatedly in Charleston, South Carolina, over who was tougher on gun control and Wall Street and how to shape the future of health care in America. Iran released three Americans, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati (ah-MEER' hehk-MAH'-tee), Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian (reh-ZY'-ahn) and pastor Saeed Abedini (sah-EED' ah-beh-DEE'-nee), as part of a prisoner swap which also netted Tehran some $100 billion in sanctions relief.

Underwater Search for MH370 Ends With No Trace of Missing Jet

The deep-sea search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 ended on Tuesday without any trace being found of the plane that vanished in 2014 with 239 people on board, the three countries involved in the search said.

The location of Flight MH370 has become one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries since the plane, a Boeing 777, disappeared en route to Beijing from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

"Despite every effort using the best science available ... the search has not been able to locate the aircraft," Malaysian, Australian and Chinese authorities said in a statement.

"The decision to suspend the underwater search has not been taken lightly nor without sadness."

The last search vessel left the area on Tuesday, the three countries said, after scouring the 120,000-sq-km (46,000-sq-mile) area of the Indian Ocean sea floor that has been the focus of the almost-three-year search.

Malaysia, Australia and China agreed in July to suspend the $145 million search if the plane was not found, or if new evidence that might offer a clue as to its whereabouts was not uncovered, once that area had been checked

Very nice. Mostly clear with temps between 72-75 for the most part. Cleaned up the last of the fallen leaves and branches from the big storm last week on Saturday. Then watched football for the rest of the day. Had a couple smokes and a few drinks to cap off the evening.

This seemed appropriate to post with Dean's trip to the Doctor this morning.

At the doctor's office the receptionist always asks why you are there, and you have to say, in front of others, what is wrong and sometimes it is embarrassing.

There is nothing worse than a Doctor's Receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you in a room full of other patients.

A 75-year-old man walked into a crowded waiting room and approached the desk.

The Receptionist said, 'Yes sir, what are you seeing the Doctor for today?'

'There's something wrong with my dick', he replied.

The receptionist became irritated and said, 'You shouldn't come into a crowded waiting room and say things like that. '

'Why not, you asked me what was wrong and I told you,' he said.

The Receptionist replied; 'Now you've caused some embarrassment in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and discussed the problem further with the Doctor in private.'

The man replied, 'You shouldn't ask people questions in a roomful of strangers, if the answer could embarrass anyone. The man walked out, waited several minutes, and then re-entered.

The Receptionist smiled smugly and asked, 'Yes??'

'There's something wrong with my ear,' he stated.

The Receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice.. 'And what is wrong with your ear, Sir?'

'I can't piss out of it,' he replied.

The waiting room erupted in laughter...

Strangely enough if it was a commie advocacy (bicycle advocacy groups for instance) it would likely have not been blocked but the words Cigar..... or Alcohol will get it blocked every time now.

Edit:  even though it does not block the banter for some reason but it does block halfwheel and all the cigar vendors.

I can say with certainty that your company blocks websites based on list. Our site isn't popular enough to make any list. In this case, it has absolutely nothing to do with tobacco. There is a part of the ban list that includes Advocacy Organizations. On a day when it isn't raining, your IT guys can edit that list.

Petitions are for liberals....
And politicians just use it as a way to get your name on the list for endless money requests and propaganda.

Makes sense, but the local guys can't edit it only the headquarters assholes can do that and you have to send them a justification for needing access to a blocked site........... As long as they don't block the banter then fuk-um and the horse they rode in on.

Malaysia, Australia and China agreed in July to suspend the $145 million search if the plane was not found, or if new evidence that might offer a clue as to its whereabouts was not uncovered, once that area had been checked
don't they know that the Aliens, took the whole jet?

In addition to their own (which is already posted), Halfwheel will be positing their composite rating next Monday, the 16th.  Cigar Coop will finish with posting their top two over the next couple of days, and the Stogieguys rating is available (rather than a top 25, it is a listing of their "5 stogies" rated cigars [4 cigars including Warped Futuro Selección Suprema, Paul Garmirian 25th Anniversary Connoisseur, Aging Room Cigars Bin No. 1 B Minor and E.P. Carrillo Short Run 2016] and 12 cigars rating 4 1/2 cigars.  They are provided on the 26 December post.

Just FYI in case you use some of these lists to prioritize your own shopping/tasting plans in 2017.

Solid prices for Johnny Tobacconaut, but still have more room to drop.

Johnny prices look decent, don't know how many are still out there in the system
I think a good possibility will be Famous, if they have stock and clear them out you can also use a coupon

I wonder if that code from JR still works?
I was going to check that on some Namakubi's but I can't even get their site to work right.

Famous was out of most of the better choices the other night.
Tex, Wow, check out famous prices on the room 101 blowout now, chief cool arrow was $151 the other day, another famous famous flip, no not our Flip
They are some real scumbags, after Fish said catsrule worked I tried to buy a box of Namakubi Papi Chulo Ecuador's when it said 4 remaining but every time I tried to put them in my cart they said sold out.  Now that they jacked the price up I was able to put 4 boxes in my cart and it still showed 3 available.

The famous deal did not include FS either.

True, however they did have $30 off $150 which brought the Chief's down to $126.94 shipped

24 hr. Room 101 blowout at JR, will let you decide if prices are "sponge worthy"
Thanks for the heads up, having taken a look I would hope for/anticipate better pricing down the road but who knows?

$64.26 is a pretty good deal on a box of Namakubi Roxxo's, imo... w/free shipping

Odd that the Tobacconaut's don't include free shipping

Sorry to disappoint but Tex was not trying to buy those.

Edit:  Tex wants a 5'r or so of Chief's and a cheap box of Namakubi Papi Chulo Ecuador's is about it but if really cheap I would take a box of Chief's.

Very good prices overall.  Best prices I've seen on Namakubi in quite a while
Best vitola variety for San Andres and HN.
Solid prices for Johnny Tobacconaut, but still have more room to drop.
Dave, is it your feeling that there is still a lot of Johnny inventory around?
Yes, I'm thinking inventory of Johnny Tobacconaut and Chief Cool Arrow are fairly hight, and "discounted prices" are still premium.  Think they will come down another step.  Totally a hunch/guess on my part.

And the Houston MLK Day Report:

Houston needs to try a little harder...

Eight people were shot Monday afternoon at a Miami park, disrupting an otherwise peaceful afternoon commemorating Martin Luther King Jr., police said.

Five minors and three adults were shot around 3:40 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, Miami-Dade police said in a statement. Several more were injured as a shooting sparked a stampede out of the park, which had wrapped up celebrations for Martin Luther King Jr. Day a couple of hours before, The Miami Herald reported.

Don't have Chicago for just Monday, but for the weekend:

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least 39 people have been shot across Chicago over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, leaving 10 dead.

Evening Shank.  Stocking up on the Room 101s?

Lol. Have not yet but will go have a look at JR's. I believe I was looking at them at Famous, or Holts, one or the other, or both, recently. Don't really know what to make of them. The MCII PC I got are OK; I loved em at first but they've worn off. After having spent $69 on a box of 50, many of the other 101 prices just seem really high. I understand it was a good deal, but even $240 or whatever the lowest price is now seems ridiculous. Not sure if the rest of the line is worth it or not.

Probably will hold off buying for a bit unless I'm implored to spring for some awesome deal.

Looks like the lowest price on the PC is the San Andreas at $128.25. I believe a certain merchant at c.com was offering one or two after the MCII blowout at the same $69 a box not long ago...

Yes. I did read that! It seems likely in light of some of the recent deals and the apparent abundance of inventory. Has the manufacturer/brander decided to do away with the line? What's going on with all the sales? These are Davidoff smokes, no?

Some of the larger vitolas of the 101s are a little better-priced I suppose. What are the best of the line? (Subjective question, I know.)

Well, IMHO the MC 2 and the Namakubi but they are very different so you might like the Namakubi but I would not recommend you buying a box to find out.

I think you are not alone in liking the Namakubi. It seems to me I've seen that one get the most praise, other than the MCII.

There are two Namakubi's the old one and a newer Ecuador version.  Both outstanding and I like the Ecuador a bit better but I am not necessarily in the majority on that.

Not a bad day here for it here. I just did some tidying in the carport and burned an MCII pc. I'm never very happy with them for the first 3/4" inch or so. The box they came in has a bit of a paint/chemical smell, even the cedar, and I always get a little of that flavor up front. They pick up from there. I nubbed it at an inch or so and could have kept going. Interestingly, I could have easily walked away from it at the first 3/4". Not sure what's going on there.

You smoking anything today, TR?
