Houston names Major Applewhite its new head coach. Not Lane Kiffin. Probably for the best.
Kiffin is very good with the offense. It remains to be seen whether he has truly learned his lessons as a head coach. Think there is a risk in any case.
What many dont seem to realize is that there is a fundamental difference between being position coach and head coach. Position coach can focus on the routine, scouting players, training, and game plan. Head coaches have to pull all the pieces together and make final decisions, manage both players and staff, then they have to be the face of the program, deal with the University President, AD, athletic booster and fans. Like the difference between being a product manager and a CEO. Not really the same skillsets.
