Morning, all. Happy Short Work Week (hopefully).
What do you mean, hopefully? Is there a chance Thanksgiving is canceled?
Well, I don't know if Rick gets forced to work or not, so I was just hoping we did indeed all get a short week.
Ahhhh. Understood.
Definitely a short week for me, since I'm only working today and tomorrow. Kids are off all week.
The organization I'm joining, automatically gets the Wednesday and Friday off too. Something to look forward to for next year. I should be getting my start day today. It's looking like December 4th or 11th.
It's official. Start date of December 11, 2023.

So, 23 years ago I wrote a Christmas Song called "Holiest of Nights." To my knowledge, it is unique in that it is the Christmas story from the perspective of the oft-vilified innkeeper who, in the minds of many, refused the Holy Family shelter at the inn. I'm kinda proud of it, but more importantly, it became a tradition at the church over 21 years for me to perform the song on Christmas Eve, and the song developed a fanbase of several dozen people who insist it's not Christmas until they hear that song. They've been asking for years for me to record it and release it. And that's nice, and I'm flattered. But I've never really done it, because it was really enough that I played it at Christmas Eve services.

Except now I'm not playing on Christmas Eve, so there was an uptick in requests yet again for me to offer a recording. And then my stepmother, who runs a publishing company, asked if she could include it in a forthcoming children's book for the Advent season. I looked over the galleys, and liked what I saw, so I've agreed for it to be included, and I agreed to schedule a session to record the song properly for release on Dec 1. So I will be spending Black Friday with the family band, Rusty Axle, recording that song and my duet arrangement of "O Holy Night" for release.

Of course, that meant I had to rejoin ASCAP, and give the attorney a heads-up, and all the bullshit that songwriters have to do to earn a coupla bucks in royalties and account for the entirely remote possibility someone might try to rip off the song. I should be so lucky as to be ripped off, right?

At least the song's 30 devoted fans will finally get their wish.

And here, completely unsolicited, are the lyrics for my  "Christmas song."

Holiest of Nights
Words and music by Bret Holtz
( 2000 GrunzleWorks - ASCAP.  All rights reserved)

It might be easy to regard me with scorn
when you think about the night
Jesus was born
I was the one who stood there at the door
and said, “All my rooms are taken
I don’t have any more.”

I know you think the Earth stood still
to hear the angels sing
The world in solemn stillness lay
maybe in your dreams

I had twenty people sleeping
in five little rooms that night
Every single one complaining,
not a thing I did was right
My wife was in the kitchen,
she’d been there all day
And my boys,
who should have been asleep
Were in the stable, pitchin’ hay

My heart sank when a young man knocked and asked me for a room
His wife was just a child herself,
with a baby coming soon

The little town of Bethlehem
was far from still that night
There were people sleeping in the streets
The world was going wild
But for a moment short and sweet
a light of hope burned bright
In those tired and frightened eyes
That holiest of nights

My wife would have killed me
if I’d turned those two away
So I took them to the stable,
and my boys threw down more hay
We emptied out the manger,
tied the animals outside
I said, “It’s not the place to have a child
But at least it’s safe and dry.”

A long time after midnight
I finally closed my eyes
But in the early hours I rushed outside
when I heard a baby cry

The little town of Bethlehem
was far from still that night
There was no deep or dreamless sleep
around that little child
But for a moment, short and sweet
a light of hope burned bright
Against the shadows of this world
That holiest of nights

Then shepherds came with crazy tales
of angels in the sky
The sun came up, and we went on
with our hectic, busy lives...

On my way into Jerusalem
to celebrate the feast
I saw three poor souls get crucified
it was a shameful sight to see
There were two thieves, and a rabbi
I’d heard preaching once or twice
So I asked a woman what he’d done
and she turned with tearful eyes

A shock of recognition
sent shivers through my soul
She was the woman, he was the child
From my stable all those years ago!

The little town of Bethlehem
was far from still that night
when a king was born to live and die
and rising, bring us all to life
But from that moment, ever on
a light of hope burns bright
when we celebrate with grateful hearts
with peaceful souls
with tearful eyes
When we celebrate with grateful hearts
That holiest of nights

I read the song lyrics first and enjoyed the clever perspective. I'm interested to hear and even buy a copy when you release it.

Thanks, buddy. I'll only have been unemployed for 6 months, by the time I start. And for a total of 16 months out of the last 7 years. This will be my first full-time opportunity in the same amount of time. I'm pretty stoked and know that better times lie ahead.
