Elizabeth, NJ - A device in a backpack was detonated near the Elizabeth train station early Monday as authorities were using a bomb robot to examine the item, officials said.

The blast occurred around 12:40 a.m. near Morris Avenue and Julian Place. The explosion was not a controlled blast, but happened as a bomb robot was cutting the device, according to Mayor Christian Bollwage. No one was injured in the blast, Bollwage said.

Police found five devices inside a single backpack near the train station, including one that went off. After the explosion, press and bystanders were moved back because the other explosive devices inside of the backpack were believed to still be live, Bollwage said.

On Twitter, the FBI's Newark division said "multiple improvised explosive devices" were found near the train station.

The incident unfolded after two men found the backpack in a waste basket on North Broad Street and Julian Place around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, the mayor said.

The men took the package "because they thought it was of some value," walked for a bit, then saw wires and a pipe, dropped the package and notified Elizabeth Police, he said.

Bollwage told reporters the explosives were found not far from Wally's Pub near the train station.

Today, September 19 is.............. National Butterscotch Pudding Day

People who have a sweet tooth are sure to love Butterscotch Pudding Day, which is held each year on September 19th. This special day is the perfect excuse to indulge in delicious butterscotch pudding. This dessert is extremely easy to make and uses brown sugar, butter, sugar and treacle. The ingredients are boiled together and then cooled until they set. The final constancy of butterscotch pudding should be light and creamy and budding chefs can have fun adding ingredients such as cream, milk and vanilla extract.

Although nobody knows the exact origins of Butterscotch Pudding Day, records show that this dessert has been around since at least 1848. There are a number of variations available on the standard recipe and butterscotch pudding is extremely easy to make. If you have children, making butterscotch pudding is the perfect way to celebrate Butterscotch Pudding Day. Or why not surprise someone special by making this sweet treat just for them.

Today is Monday, Sept. 19, the 263rd day of 2016. There are 103 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Sept. 19th, 1796, President George Washington's farewell address was published. In it, America's first chief executive advised, "Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all."

On this date:

In 1777, the first Battle of Saratoga was fought during the Revolutionary War; although British forces succeeded in driving out the American troops, the Americans prevailed in a second battle the following month.

In 1881, the 20th president of the United States, James A. Garfield, died 2½ months after being shot by Charles Guiteau; Chester Alan Arthur became president.

In 1906, addressing the annual dinner of The Associated Press in New York, Mark Twain said, "There are only two forces that can carry light to all the corners of the globe - only two - the sun in the heavens and The Associated Press down here."

In 1915, vaudeville performer W.C. Fields made his movie debut as "Pool Sharks," a one-reel silent comedy, was released.

In 1934, Bruno Hauptmann was arrested in New York and charged with the kidnap-murder of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr.

In 1945, Nazi radio propagandist William Joyce, known as "Lord Haw-Haw," was convicted of treason and sentenced to death by a British court.

In 1959, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, in Los Angeles as part of his U.S. tour, reacted angrily upon being told that, for security reasons, he wouldn't get to visit Disneyland.

In 1960, Cuban leader Fidel Castro, in New York to visit the United Nations, angrily checked out of the Shelburne Hotel in a dispute with the management; Castro ended up staying at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem.

In 1970, the situation comedy "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" debuted on CBS-TV.

In 1982, the smiley emoticon was invented by Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman, who suggested punctuating humorously intended computer messages with a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis as a horizontal "smiley face." :-)

In 1985, the Mexico City area was struck by a devastating earthquake that killed at least 9,500 people.

In 1996, IBM announced it would extend health benefits to the partners of its gay employees.

Ten years ago: President George W. Bush, speaking to the U.N. General Assembly, tried to quell anti-Americanism in the Middle East by assuring Muslims he was not waging war against Islam. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan delivered an emotional farewell address, appealing to the world to unite against human rights abuses, religious divisions, brutal conflicts and an unjust world economy. Thailand's army commander staged a coup, ousting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (TAHK'-sin SHIN'-uh-wah) over accusations of corruption. Actress Elizabeth Allen, 77, died in Fishkill, New York.

Five years ago: In a White House address, a combative President Barack Obama demanded that the richest Americans pay higher taxes to help cut soaring U.S. deficits by more than $3 trillion. Mariano Rivera set a major league record with his 602nd save, closing out the New York Yankees' 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. Dolores Hope, the sultry-voiced songstress who was married to Bob Hope for 69 years and sometimes sang on his shows for U.S. troops and on his television specials, died in Los Angeles at age 102.

One year ago: Pope Francis, arriving in Havana, hailed detente between Cuba and the United States as a model of reconciliation for the world as he launched a 10-day tour of the former Cold War foes. Dont think so, just been putting a lot of things off knowing we were going to move next year.

Some is maintenance, some is the termite repair and some is minor updating but we will enjoy it for 6-9 months, hopefully no longer though.   Master bath is all updating.

An express train that normally wouldn't stop at my station, did so. I have to stand but at least I'm on my way. Not sure why I give a shit about being in the office on time. Lose/lose
Hope you figure out that answer soon Mr. Mayor.

@Bean....did you see Fishy's little project from the weekend?  TV was kinda small though, but then I remembered it was Fish.
Yes I did.  Looks like fishy has been watching a little too much Chip and Joanna with that barn door slider.  And the trim wasn't mitered. I give it a C+.   ;)
No miters on purpose Bean, c'mon. Keep up with the barn decor...and the tv is 42", perfect fit. You were probably confused by the look of a completed project in a short period of time 😂

I was thinking the same thing, a bathroom size tv but guess Fish has good eyes, or maybe the Missy Fish had the last say in tv selections. ::)

Morning Bean.
Or she has low expectations based on size....he told her it was 60".

Its outside but under an 8' deep porch roof, I wanted it covered by a door or else when I remove it for the winter it would just be an empty box

I'm more interested in how he's hiding the cable box. My wife's cousin put all the equipment in a closet in the basement and has no wires anywhere. He's tried to explain it to me a dozen times and I still don't get it. Somewhere you have to plug in that VHF/UHF antenna, no?

Suspect In NYC, NJ Explosions In Custody

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A man being sought in connection with an explosion in Seaside Park, New Jersey and another blast in Chelsea is believed to be in custody, Linden police said.

Authorities have been looking for Ahmad Khan Rahami, a 28-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan.

Linden police said they responded to a call of a man sleeping in a doorway. When officers arrived, the man opened fire, injuring two officers, police told CBS2.

The NYPD and the FBI first said Monday morning that Rahami was being sought in the Chelsea explosion that left 29 people hurt.

New Jersey State Police said later Monday, citing the FBI, that the bombing in Chelsea was connected to the Seaside Park blast that happened before a charity 5K race. No one was injured in that incident.

One would think the Market Futures would be in the tank with the bombing issues but DOW Futures are UP 70 points.
spurred by runs on pressure cookers and pipe.
Good morning boys.  Stayed a little extra in Penn Station this morning.  thought I would have some
coffee and a few Tim Horton donuts.  Doing my part to thumb my nose to the terrorists, (and I hadn't
had a Canadian maple donut in a long while!).   BTW Good morning.....

He's a naturalized citizen, so legally - which is all that ever really counts - this was a domestic attack.  But it underscores that no matter how liberally one wants to look at this, we have a problem with Muslim immigrants.  And Muslims give the lie to the liberal viewpoint that all religions are somehow equally worthy (or equally unworthy).  Muslims are a different kettle of fish altogether.  It's one of the few things about which Bill Maher is right.

They didn't have butterscotch so I went with tapioca.

Still lots of Dean experiences to take in.  New projects tour (Screen Room, including illegal fan), past projects tour, 27 holes of golf, lunch with the Lady, dinner on the Redhead's yacht, go to a meeting, capped off with the signature sunrise with coffee and EPC 2nd event.

Got travel pretty well booked through October....  CA, CO, GA, RI, SC.....should be fun.
Certainly a variety of scenery.   Florida 2 times for me is all I know about through early November but could have a couple of in-state trips after mid October
So more Dean time already?
Possibly so, got to pick up my boat.   Other trip is further south and my son is meeting me there.
Going to drive the boat up to SC and leave it there I take it?
Most likely

Can you imagine this? ::)

On September 15th, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has issued warning letters to 55 retailers who were found in violation of selling tobacco products to minors. Perhaps the most interesting fact is that none of the violations involved a traditional (i.e. non-flavored, non-infused, 100% long-filler tobacco) handmade cigar product.

Sail a boat, drive a car unless you're towing it on a trailer.

Can't sail a boat with no sail. You can row it, paddle it, motor it, or drift it...but can't sail it. ;-)

What is it?
It's a binary explosive, most commonly used to make exploding targets for shooters.  It's a poor choice for making IED's because it takes a lot of power to get it to explode.  Like shooting it with a .223 or larger caliber bullet fired from a rifle.  I suspect that's why these bombs didn't accomplish much, relative to the Boston Marathon bombs.
