Today is Monday, Aug. 1, the 214th day of 2016. There are 152 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Joseph Whitman, 25, an engineering student at the University of Texas in Austin, went on an armed rampage that killed 14 people, most of whom were shot by Whitman while he was perched in the clock tower of the main campus building. Whitman, who had also slain his wife and mother hours earlier, was finally gunned down by police.

On this date:

In 1714, Britain's Queen Anne died at age 49; she was succeeded by George I.

In 1876, Colorado was admitted as the 38th state.

In 1907, the U.S. Army Signal Corps established an aeronautical division, the forerunner of the U.S. Air Force.

In 1913, the Joyce Kilmer poem "Trees" was first published in "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse."

In 1936, the Olympics opened in Berlin with a ceremony presided over by Adolf Hitler.

In 1944, an uprising broke out in Warsaw, Poland, against Nazi occupation; the revolt lasted two months before collapsing.

In 1946, President Harry S. Truman signed measures establishing the Fulbright Program and the Atomic Energy Commission.

In 1957, the United States and Canada agreed to create the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).

In 1971, the Concert for Bangladesh, organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, took place at New York's Madison Square Garden.

In 1975, a 35-nation summit in Finland concluded with the signing of a declaration known as the Helsinki Accords dealing with European security, human rights and East-West contacts.

In 1981, the rock music video channel MTV made its debut.

In 1994, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley confirmed they'd been secretly married 11 weeks earlier. (Presley filed for divorce from Jackson in January 1996, citing irreconcilable differences.)

Ten years ago: Mel Gibson issued a statement in which he denied being a bigot; he also apologized to "everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words" he'd used when he was arrested for investigation of drunken driving. Fidel Castro released a statement a day after ceding power to his brother Raul in which he sought to reassure Cubans that his health was stable after intestinal surgery.

Five years ago: The U.S. House of Representatives passed, 269-161, emergency legislation to avert the nation's first-ever financial default; Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House for the first time since being shot in January 2011 to cast a "yes" vote.

One year ago: Japan's Imperial Household Agency released a digital version of Emperor Hirohito's radio address on Aug. 15, 1945, announcing his country's surrender in World War II; the digital recording offered clearer audio, although Hirohito spoke in an arcane form of Japanese that many of his countrymen would have found difficult to comprehend. British singer and TV host Cilla Black, 72, died in Estepona (eh-steh-POH'-nah) in southern Spain.

good morning Monday lovers and haters. last nights meetings were long, 4 hours between the two of them, then it was off to the redheads place for a late pasta dinner and back home to put together the meeting report and email it out. didn't hit the zzzzz's until after 2am. great thunderstorm rolled in late, nice lightning show and about 2" of rain. I need to mow this week, maybe tomorrow.
EPC 2nd and coffee here.

Tried a 2016 Las Calaveras yesterday morning, very nice smoke and outstanding construction quality.  IMHO easily box worthy.
Probably will not last too long on the market, so don't put it off.
Got to buy my Laranja Lancero's today!
May have to consider going from TexasRedfish or TexDave to Lancero Larry.
@ Tony - can I reserve the name LowCountryLancero?
Good one, I like it!

Gurkha Day at the Page, Happy Monday Flip!

Plenty of fighting knives and axes too!
"Gurkha owner Kaizer, he HATES this deal. But you'll love it: 30 big n' flavory blends $2.39 per stick, shipped free. Gurkha guilt-free gluttony."

What the hell kind of dialog is that?  Is Kaizer a pet name for his buddy or what?   And we all know he loves 90% discounts on his sticks, so don't lie about it.

Americans should make up their own minds on the Second Amendment, not rely on politicians or movie stars for their opinions.

And for that matter All Other Things too!

"Earnings may be signaling a ‘sell the house, sell the car, sell the kids’–type bear market"

But flip a coin because this is also directly from Market Watch this morning:

"S&P 500 hasn’t done this in 40 years — and it’s a bullish sign"

For the last 11 trading sessions, the large-cap index has traded in a range of 0.92%—representing the tightest trading range dating back to at least 1970, said Ryan Detrick, a technical analyst and senior market strategist at LPL Financial.

Furthermore, the S&P 500 SPX, -0.14%  saw a streak of alternating higher and lower closes for 11 straight days—the third longest range of such movements on record, Detrick said in a tweet Thursday after the close.

Hola Bret. How was your weekend?
Busy. Retirement party for a friend of mine, then the church gig, then had to give a friend a lift to the hardware store, then fix the latch on my SIL's car door, then determine that our barbecue grill has bit the big one, then planning for rehearsal with the band and next week's church gigs, then planning for the upcoming car show gig, and an advanced booking for next February. Then I discovered I configured a credit card payment from the wrong bank account.  I'm headed to work where I can relax.

And yours?

DOW   -30 @ 18,402

Price of oil is getting killed so look for stocks to sink some as long as that  is going on.

Currently OIL is -0.79 @ $40.82
This is directly from  Market Watch this morning:

Dow up +29.11....all this doom and gloom shit!
Reality Check.     DOW.  -41.12

Scary, but Bernie is seeming more and more sane all the time.  Commie sure, but sane compared to the others.

Unfortunately the entire basis of his belief system is insane.  But yeah, the choice is between a continuation down the road we're on or veer off onto a twisty road with lots of blind curves.
