Happy Saint Patty's day! Looks like the Fighting Irish had some luck yesterday in getting into the tournament. Let's see how far that luck can take them.

Morning, Saint Tony. I've got a 601 Green on deck for this evening, that's about as Irish as I'll get today.

During dinner last night it had been proposed that we buy 30 Shamrock Shakers and Mcflurrys along with a separate freezer to house them because the limited offer will be up soon.

Lol, I know 3 kids here who would be fully behind that plan. And let's be honest, I would be too. The oldest and I went with the Mcflurry yesterday, which I think might actually be better than the shamrock shake.

Today is Thursday, March 17, the 76th day of 2022. There are 289 days left in the year.
This is St. Patrick’s Day.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On March 17, 1969, Golda Meir became prime minister of Israel.

On this date:

In 1762, New York held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade.

In 1776, the Revolutionary War Siege of Boston ended as British forces evacuated the city.

In 1905, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt married Franklin Delano Roosevelt in New York.

In 1941, the National Gallery of Art opened in Washington, D.C.

In 1942, six days after departing the Philippines during World War II, Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia to become supreme commander of Allied forces in the southwest Pacific theater.

In 1950, scientists at the University of California at Berkeley announced they had created a new radioactive element, “californium.”

In 1966, a U.S. Navy midget submarine located a missing hydrogen bomb that had fallen from a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber into the Mediterranean off Spain. (It took several more weeks to actually recover the bomb.)

In 1970, the United States cast its first veto in the U.N. Security Council, killing a resolution that would have condemned Britain for failing to use force to overthrow the white-ruled government of Rhodesia.

In 2003, edging to the brink of war, President George W. Bush gave Saddam Hussein 48 hours to leave his country. Iraq rejected Bush’s ultimatum, saying that a U.S. attack to force Saddam from power would be “a grave mistake.”

In 2010, Michael Jordan became the first ex-player to become a majority owner in the NBA as the league’s Board of Governors unanimously approved Jordan’s $275 million bid to buy the Charlotte Bobcats from Bob Johnson.

In 2016, finally bowing to years of public pressure, SeaWorld Entertainment said it would no longer breed killer whales or make them perform crowd-pleasing tricks.

In 2020, the Kentucky Derby and the French Open were each postponed from May to September because of the coronavirus.

Ten years ago: Twin suicide car bombings killed at least 27 people near intelligence and security buildings in the Syrian capital of Damascus. John Demjanjuk (dem-YAHN’-yuk), 91, convicted of being a low-ranking guard at the Sobibor death camp as he maintained his innocence, died in Bad Feilnbach (bahd FYLN’-bahk), Germany.

Five years ago: President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl) tried to sidestep their differences in a meeting at the White House, but their first public appearance was punctuated by some awkward moments (during a photo op in the Oval Office, the two did not shake hands before reporters). Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited the world’s most heavily armed border, greeting U.S. soldiers on guard near the tense buffer zone between rivals North and South Korea.

One year ago: In an unclassified intelligence report, U.S. officials warned that violent extremists motivated by political grievances and racial biases posed an “elevated threat” to the United States. President Joe Biden told ABC that senators who wanted to oppose his legislative agenda through a filibuster should have to actually stand and talk for hours, rather than simply signaling their objection. Ford Motor Company told about 30,000 employees worldwide who had worked from home during the pandemic that they could continue to do so indefinitely, with flexible hours approved by their managers.

I'm about as Irish as Tony is, but no reason not to celebrate!

I'm Scots-Irish on both sides, maternal and paternal.  My dad's maternal side is Scots-Irish, and his paternal side is German with a little Norwegian.  My mom's paternal side is Scots-Irish, and her maternal side is Swiss-German.

One of my great-great-great grandfathers ran a pub in Dublin.  So I'm celebrating.

Just shy of 8 hours until I find out if my max bid on this sweetheart holds up.
I know nothing about guns but that is a beautiful piece.
It's a Smith & Wesson 686.  The 586 and 686 were built on S&W's heavy-duty L frame, and chambered in .357 Magnum.  The 586 had a blued finish, and the 686 was brushed stainless steel. This is a 686-3, the third design revision and dates to the early 90's.  That makes it desirable because in Rev 4 they added the "Hilary Lock" when they knuckled under to pressure from the Clinton Administration.  To this day S&W is putting the keylock on 686s (now in Rev 6), and the lock fucks up the trigger action. But people still buy them because the 686 is arguably the most durable handgun ever built, and unless you've experienced the pre-lock action, you don't know what you don't know.

I had a 686-0 in 1987, when the Warden and I were dating, but traded it for a Ruger Blackhawk. Then a disastrous cross-country music tour in 1988 left me stranded in Seattle without enough money to get home to Tucson.  So I had to sell the Blackhawk to a friend to get home, and it was several years before I could again afford to buy a gun.

Regret of all the firearms I ever owned and sold has driven me to replace the ones that got away.  It's very hard to do, finding period-correct examples, but I'm down to four. The 686, the Blackhawk, an early 80's Winchester Model 94, and a Zastava Tokarev in 9mm. If this auction goes my way, I'll be down to 3.

The thing about getting old is that you marvel that there were years you couldn't scrape enough money together to afford what was then a $300 gun, and now you don't even think about the fact that it costs $100 to take the wife out to dinner.

I know, retirement will come, and I won't be able to afford it again.   But I'll have the guns. ;-)

It turns out is was Payday Thursday for me. Woohoo!
Must be pretty flush if you don't have to keep track of when payday is.
No. Just no use keeping track when it is so inconsistent. I know I will get it eventually just don't know when. (TWHS)

Wow, the scammers are getting good.

I found this in my junk mail folder.  Note that the most obvious clue for a phishing attempt - a bad domain name - is absent.  There is no obvious clue that this isn't legitimately an email from eBay, other than I've never gotten an email from confirmation@ebay.com before. It did make me go log in to eBay to see if something was amiss there.

But God help the poor souls who are duped into clicking the links.  It's a reminder to all - never click links, even if they look legitimate.  If it seems like a legitimate message from an online presence you utilize, open up your browser and manually visit the site to see if anything looks amiss.

great time at golf yesterday. the Ranger had us go off early to get ahead of a large group that would have been ahead of us. we were on the green at #1 when we saw them. we hit our tee shots on #2 when they came up behind us. as we were starting #3 they were waiting on us. I turned and said "good morning guys". no response. after #3 we never saw them again. the Ranger came out and said they were making up for a rain out the other day and had already played the first two holes previously. ? why the heck they didn't start all over the Ranger had no idea. I am really hitying my drives long, 3 wood too but apparently getting a draw with it out of my swing to get use to. chipping with my 7 iron was spot on and holed out 3 times. could not hit a putt to save my life. the Ranger even let us play the back 9 with no charge and we tipped him well. it was a great day with beautiful weather.

I don't miss that part of golfing at all. Near me, you are always rushed because it is so difficult AND EXPENSIVE to get a tee time.
