Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Nope. Had chicken stew and whole wheat bread for dinner about 7:00. One drink after dinner.

But yes...there does seem to be a bit of a pattern emerging, or a partial one.

Carnal relations with my wife. You asked.

It's almost a certainty that afterward I'll dream I'm driving around lost in Tucson and snap awake at 3AM. There are variations to the dream. Sometimes there are people in the car. Sometimes it's some big metropolis but I think it's Tucson. In one variation it's an airport, in another it's a complicated parking lot amongst skyscrapers. But always the same basic tension - trying to figure out where I'm going. Then, insomnia.

Weird.

Same to you, Rick. The wife has to work tonight, but if they don't get around here with the plows, she's definitely not going to make it in. Her car wouldn't make it out of the driveway before getting stuck.

I take it back, now that it's light out, it looks like a plow has come by at least one half of the street. Not enough to get my wife out of the driveway, but it's something, I guess. Still not sure when our trash will get picked up, though.

Never mind, according to the wife, that was just a guy with a plow attachment on his truck, not an actual city plow. Sheesh.

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 18, the 18th day of 2022.
There are 347 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Jan. 18, 1943, during World War II, Jewish insurgents in the Warsaw Ghetto launched their initial armed resistance against Nazi troops, who eventually succeeded in crushing the rebellion.

On this date:

In 1778, English navigator Captain James Cook reached the present-day Hawaiian Islands, which he named the “Sandwich Islands.”

In 1911, the first landing of an aircraft on a ship took place as pilot Eugene B. Ely brought his Curtiss biplane in for a safe landing on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Harbor.

In 1913, entertainer Danny Kaye was born David Daniel Kaminsky in New York City.

In 1957, a trio of B-52s completed the first non-stop, round-the-world flight by jet planes, landing at March Air Force Base in California after more than 45 hours aloft.

In 1975, the situation comedy “The Jeffersons,” a spin-off from “All in the Family,” premiered on CBS-TV.

In 1990, a jury in Los Angeles acquitted former preschool operators Raymond Buckey and his mother, Peggy McMartin Buckey, of 52 child molestation charges.

In 1991, financially strapped Eastern Airlines shut down after more than six decades in business.

In 1993, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was observed in all 50 states for the first time.

In 2005, the world’s largest commercial jet, the Airbus A380 “superjumbo” capable of flying up to 800 passengers, was unveiled in Toulouse, France.

In 2011, Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington for a four-day state visit; President Barack Obama welcomed him with a private dinner in the White House residence. The first director of the Peace Corps, R. Sargent Shriver, died in Bethesda, Maryland, at age 95.

In 2019, Jason Van Dyke, the white Chicago police officer who gunned down Black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014, was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison.

In 2020, ahead of opening statements in the first Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, House prosecutors wrote that Trump had “used his official powers to pressure a foreign government to interfere in a United States election for his personal political gain,” while Trump’s legal team denounced what it called a “brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election.”

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama rejected the Keystone XL project, a Canadian company’s plan to build a 1,700-mile pipeline to carry oil across six U.S. states to Texas refineries. Wikipedia and other websites went dark to protest two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.

Five years ago: Twenty-nine people were killed when an avalanche buried the Hotel Rigopiano in central Italy (nine people were pulled out alive by rescuers). Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez were elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame. Opera singer Roberta Peters, 86, died in Rye, New York.

One year ago: California became the first state to record more than 3 million known coronavirus infections, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Speakers at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration in Atlanta called for a renewed dedication to nonviolence following a turbulent year in which a deadly pandemic, protests over systemic racism and a divisive election capped by an attack on the U.S. Capitol strained Americans’ capacity for civility. Jimmie Rodgers, singer of the 1957 hits “Honeycomb” and “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine,” whose career in music and movies was disrupted by a severe head injury a decade later, died in California at age 87.

I'll answer for him. Doesn't like and therefore, doesn't use Tapatalk. The issue with posting photos is a definition of paths on the forum software. They changed when they migrated me. It isn't so easy for me to change because I lost my SSH access to the Linux server. I need to do another round with the idiots at support. Tapatalk uses its own repository and is not affected.

The repair might be an easy one if it's just a thermal fuse. Except getting to it is difficult enough even if you don't have RA.

From the sounds of struggling cars I'm hearing outside, it seems our streets have still not been plowed.  >:( >:(
That's nuts. Don't you guys pay taxes there? WTF?
It IS nuts. And not only do I pay taxes, but I pay a lot more than I used to, since this is now listed as my work location as well as my residence.
I guess then you are allowed to write off these office expenses?
Don't really have any office expenses, since they gave me all the equipment I need. Would be nice to be able to get a tax refund for roads that can't be traversed, however. Lol
You can claim the "office"/room calculated as part (%) of the overall house cost.
But LTG isn't a contractor. He's an employee. Are you talking about the home office deduction? Last I checked, you couldn't do that as an employee. Did something change?

And I don't itemize anyways, so it doesn't really matter. The standard deductions I get from being a homeowner and having 3 kids far outweighs anything I'd get otherwise.

Yup.

I checked again on the IRS site, and they explicitly say in IRS Tax Tip 2021-136 (September 15, 2021) that employees are not eligible to claim the home office deduction.  You have to be self-employed as a proprietor, partner, or corporate officer. Employees working remotely due to the pandemic do not qualify.

In any case, that deduction can be a pain if you sell your home, because of the recapture requirements.  So it's kind of a double-edged sword.

I used it pretty effectively for years doing contract work on the side, including tech consulting, various music gigs, and worship arts work for the church. But several years ago the church decided to put me on staff because the IRS kept tightening the rules about what qualified as a contractor.  My contract specified that I was not paid for rehearsing or playing music for worship services, only for the planning, coordination and artist development I did from the home office. But the tax advisers said that was a distinction that the IRS wasn't likely to recognize, which would have incurred penalties for the church. So they put me on staff and that leaves little time or flexibility to pursue other contract work. So now I've got two jobs and no home office deduction.

Well, I'm not a tax attorney, nor a certified preparer. Maybe TD knows some trick I don't.  But that Tax Tip is pretty clear.

That would have been a great deduction to give people for the pandemic - it provides tangible tax relief, applies even to renters, and if taken on an owned home the government gets to recapture when people sell their homes. Just let everyone claim it until the pandemic is over.

But Democrats don't like tax relief.  They like welfare.

Not sure how you mean "taxing for work at home."

If you run a business, you pay taxes. You can get away with operating at a loss for a while, but do it too long and the IRS gets hinky about it, and, oddly, they get hinkier if your revenue stream is low. If you're capitalized at $20k, and generate $50k or more of revenue, they'll take you seriously, even if you report a loss and even if you are otherwise employed. That's okay. But if you're undercapitalized, paying as you go, generating $10-$20k, and deducting losses, you can get away with it for a couple of years, but eventually they start to wonder if you're really trying or just manufacturing a deduction. It becomes a question of whether it's a business or a hobby, especially when a guitar or studio gear gets expensed. So I took losses in years that economic conditions could justify it, but in years that didn't I paid some taxes. It tends to mollify them if you actually do pay taxes.

As for my church contract, the problem there was that the Church obviously had to dictate where and when I did some work, even though on paper, and in fact, actually, I was considered to be volunteering when I conducted rehearsals and played worship services. If they'd contracted me to be a janitor, it would have been different, but as a musician, drawing the line between administration and performance got tricky when expensing instruments and equipment as tools when the tools only got used for volunteer work. See the difficulty?

By the letter of the law, it was legal, by the spirit of the law it was legal and ethical, but that doesn't mean much to the IRS.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I simply meant that I'm now paying more in taxes to my home city, whereas previously, the majority went to the city where my office is located. Since we're working from home now, we were required to change our work residence location, so now my home city is getting more tax dollars from me than they were prior to the world going berserk. I'm not paying any more personally, it's just a matter of where it's being sent. Which makes the lack of plowing all the more irritating.

Though, I will say it is completely plowed now, and the sun is even out. Once I log off, I can clear the heavy shit off the end of the drive left by the plows and the wife will be able to go to work. Much to her disappointment, I'm sure.

Not sure, but I've never heard of taxing for work at home either.
These are uncertain and changing times...

Ah, the joys of state and local taxes.
Amen to that.
