Today is Thursday, March 23, the 82nd day of 2017. There are 283 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On March 23, 1792, Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 94 in G Major (known as the "Surprise" symphony because of an unexpected crashing chord in the second movement) had its first public performance in London.

On this date:

In 1775, Patrick Henry delivered an address to the Virginia Provincial Convention in which he is said to have declared, "Give me liberty, or give me death!"

In 1806, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, having reached the Pacific coast, began their journey back east.

In 1914, the first installment of "The Perils of Pauline," the legendary silent film serial starring Pearl White, premiered in the greater New York City area.

In 1933, the German Reichstag adopted the Enabling Act, which effectively granted Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers.

In 1942, the first Japanese-Americans evacuated by the U.S. Army during World War II arrived at the internment camp in Manzanar, California.

In 1956, Pakistan became an Islamic republic.

In 1965, America's first two-person space mission took place as Gemini 3 blasted off with astronauts Virgil I. Grissom and John W. Young aboard for a nearly 5-hour flight.

In 1973, before sentencing a group of Watergate break-in defendants, Chief U.S. District Judge John J. Sirica read aloud a letter he'd received from James W. McCord Jr. which said there was "political pressure" to "plead guilty and remain silent."

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan first proposed developing technology to intercept incoming enemy missiles - an idea that came to be known as the Strategic Defense Initiative. Dr. Barney Clark, recipient of a Jarvik permanent artificial heart, died at the University of Utah Medical Center after 112 days with the device.

In 1994, Aeroflot Flight 593, an Airbus A310, crashed in Siberia with the loss of all 75 people on board; it turned out that a pilot's teenage son who was allowed to sit at the controls had accidentally disengaged the autopilot, causing the jetliner to go out of control.

In 2001, Russia's orbiting Mir space station ended its 15-year odyssey with a planned fiery plunge into the South Pacific.

In 2011, Academy Award-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor died in Los Angeles at age 79.

Ten years ago: The House voted for the first time to clamp a cutoff deadline on the Iraq war, agreeing by a thin margin to pull combat troops out by late 2008, an action dismissed by President George W. Bush as "political theater." Iranian forces captured 15 British sailors and marines who were searching a merchant ship in the disputed Shatt Al-Arab waterway Persian Gulf; they were held for 13 days. Miss Tennessee Rachel Smith was crowned Miss USA at the pageant in Los Angeles.

Five years ago: Urging Americans to "do some soul searching," President Barack Obama injected himself into the emotional debate over the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida, saying, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon." The U.S. Army formally charged Staff Sgt. Robert Bales with 17 counts of premeditated murder in the deaths of 17 villagers, more than half of them children, during a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan. Pope Benedict XVI landed in Mexico to throngs of faithful who lined more than 20 miles of his route into the city of Leon.

One year ago: President Barack Obama, on a fence-mending state visit to Buenos Aires, held up Argentina as an emerging world leader worthy of U.S. support, as he and President Mauricio Macri broke with years of tensions between their countries. Death claimed former baseball player-turned-broadcaster Joe Garagiola at age 90 and actor Ken Howard at age 71.

Throttlebottom:
noun

It wasn't in the definition but I'm pretty sure it's gay slang also.

I may have to stop at a bar and get a belt on the way there so that I can stay calm. Those 4 hours of the exam go by quickly, especially when my mind is racing. Hoping that'll keep me from having to read the same question 3 times or more before it sinks in.

Auspicious!  It's good to use big words on exam day, get pumped up invigorated!
I may have to stop at a bar and get a belt on the way there so that I can stay calm. Those 4 hours of the exam go by quickly, especially when my mind is racing. Hoping that'll keep me from having to read the same question 3 times or more before it sinks in.
They make pills for that you know, just pass through the nearest high school parking lot to pick some up on the way.
I would suggest Lockhart HS, but she's behind bars now.
Hahaha. You still have that one on your mind, huh?
Probably because she's bam!

Apparently another cigar out of Austin Texas....Southern Draw.  Crafted by AJF and made at his factory, currently in four offerings; Kudzu (Oscuro), Firethorn (Habano Rosado), Quickdraw (Habano, PA Broadleaf and Connecticut), and Rose of Sharon (Ecuadoran Connecticut).  Not available in too many locations outside of Texas.  On line at Smoke Inn and Cigar Federation.
Bit on the pricey side, but may be looking to explore before long.

Big Spender Raz has become Big Lender Raz.

No ditches. Now just trying to keep the interest payments coming in.

Might have to pick one up
You can order directly from them

https://buy.southerndrawcigars.com/

Southern Draw Cigars was founded by U.S. Veterans with a desire to recognize and defend our southern traditions, while honoring the history of tobacco and those resilient families who have cultivated, fermented and aged it to perfection. In collaboration with our seasoned partners that hail from a proud culture in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico and now reside in Nicaragua, which is highly regarded as the best cigar producing region of the world. Southern Draw may very well be considered a “newcomer” to this industry be we aren’t new to cigars and we offer only custom blended cigars that are hand crafted from only fine and rare aged Cuban seed tobaccos afforded us by AJ Fernandez and the dedicated team at Tabacalera Fernandez located in the heart of Estelí, Nicaragua. There are obviously many very good cigars available so we won’t attempt to simply stake claim to ultra-premium or boutique definitions but we currently produce a monthly limit of 5,000 cigars per blend, so we urge you to continue to enjoy them. Perfection may be unachievable but we will keep trying, under the watchful eye of a 3rd Generation Cuban and Master Tobacconist and with focus on the simple but powerful words of Charles Simmons “true greatness consists in being great in little things” and it is our belief at Southern Draw that “integrity is the first step to true greatness…” We go with God’s Grace and may God Bless you all.

Just add it to the list!   May be available locally, but a lot of B&Ms don't carry many lancero's as a rule.

Tatuaje Jackal and a Sam Cold Snap.  It's spring, just ignore the snow.
Damn, a bit nipply there.  At least the sun is out.
A bit damn windy here and I am cussing Fuk'n oak trees!
Indoors smoking one of your favorite sticks, Bueso Genesis Habano
Sounds like I need to send you up some smokes.
I have to get out there so I can get you guys together.
Indeed.  I've smoked about half way through the La Palina order we were supposed to split.  Like Tex needs more smokes, anyway.
Hopefully we can get together before I move!

A man can always use more smokes!
We could meet at Cedar Street again if the commies haven't outlawed cigar smoking in the patio area.  One of the little black dress ladies can sit in Travellin'Dave's seat.
Only if I'm in that seat.

I told you I'd come out for the retirement party....if only that retirement date didn't keep on shifting.
