date_1655
Rum was first introduced into the Royal Navy shortly after the Invasion of Jamaica in 1655

date_1731
The daily tot became codified in 1731

date_1740
In 1740, Admiral Vernon ordered the daily rum ration to be mixed with water. The mixture was dubbed “Grog” after Vernon’s nickname “Old Grogram”

date_1810
The exact rum blend was codified by the Admiralty in 1810

date_1823
In 1823, the daily rum ration was cut in half, and in 1850 it was halved again

date_1970
On 31 July 1970, the daily rum ration was abolished
Note:  Prior to Jamaica's rum, the tot was Brandy.
Beer was always in the mix as well, but volume storage was a problem.
Ahhh.
A gallon a day.  Alcohol was the only analgesic for the aches and pains of the physical labor.  No aspirin yet.
Works better too. NSAIDs? Don't touch the stuff.
Sides the water was usually bad.
Tomorrow we can venture into the medical applications of gin and tonic.
Yeah, that shit about killed me 32 years ago causing me to fall out of a moving car window shortly after a woman I was hitting on at a wedding introduced me to my wife as her new friend named Big Smith.   No redeeming qualities in Gin!
The nickname shoulda given you a hint.  Just sayin'…
Been a while since the Warden reminded me if that incident, maybe she forgot it ::)

Alcohol does tend to distort perception.  Bet she swore of Gin when she sobered up as well.

Why is there a hole in Hillary’s tongue? Either she had a biopsy on her tongue or she needed a hiding place for smuggling diamonds.

It may be well into the summer, but here is a useful little item for protecting your malt beverage:
