Just that while I know "of" Phish and probably have heard a song or two of theirs, and have no clue what Trey sounds like, so no comment possible.

I dropped both the boys at school this morning and I'm on my way into the office. I will be going straight from work to Philadelphia to bring my daughter and her friend to a concert after work today.
Hope you at least get a cheesesteak for your troubles.
There's no doubt I've got one of those in my immediate future.

Fifteen.

As a guitarist, I consider labelling Trey Anastasio as a "singer" is insulting to the man.
I'll defer to the expert.
Well, it doesn't require much expertise.  Think of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Johnny Mathis, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Elvis, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Jim Morrison, Tina Turner, or Bono.  What do you call them?  Singers, right?  Even though almost all of them had some skill with instruments, I'm betting only Elvis appears in your mind holding an instrument, but even then you mostly recall him without one.

Now think of Jimi Hendrix.  Singer, or guitarist?  Well, both, but do you have any pictures in your mind of Hendrix without a guitar? And do you primarily recall him for his voice, or his guitar playing?  How about Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton?

And here's the kicker - who is a better singer, Jimi Hendrix or Frank Sinatra?  Sinatra, right?  And with good reason.  Genre aside, Sinatra almost singlehandedly defined a particular approach to singing that was at first reviled by "proper" singers, who gave his style a derisive name - "crooning."  But over his career, he transformed that word into an endearment and a genre, which Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, and Bobby Darin imitated, and is now famously carried on by Harry Connick, Jr and Michael Buble. Jim Morrison is famous among rock royalty for applying Sinatra's style to rock and roll with the Doors, and that was a key part of how the Doors joined rock's elite.  Hendrix, Garcia, and Clapton could carry a tune, but nobody's imitating their singing.

So, I'm puzzled how whoever created the birthday list knows Trey Anastasio, but lists him as a singer.  Like others, he can carry a tune, but nobody's imitating his voice. The band he made his career with, Phish, were famously disciples of the Grateful Dead, and together with the Dead they defined a whole genre - "Jam Bands."  Scat singing aside, you don't "jam" as a singer, that's an instrumental thing.

Anyway, here ended the pontification.

I associate Phish with live concerts and pot smoking. I'm sure they're all super talented, but I'm not familiar with their stuff. In fact, I had no idea who Trey Anastasio was. So, I guess he's a singer?
