In a remotely just and reasonable world, Elizabeth Dole would have been the first woman to be president of the US. She had the experience and all the qualifications save one: the adroitness in dirty politics at which John McCain and George W Bush (with Dick Cheney's help) excelled. At the time, she was a bit more moderate centrist than I'd have preferred, but I was hopeful in 1999 that she might pull it off - because I hated John McCain and I wasn't crazy about George W (though W wasn't remotely the clown show that so many have tried to make him out). I'd have happily voted for Liddy Dole, given the chance.
