December 30 is.........Bacon Day

There’s nothing in this world that doesn’t taste better with Bacon. Whether it’s chocolate covered bacon from the confectioners shop, bacon cheeseburgers, bacon wrapped tater tots, or even bacon covered chapstick, you can’t deny that it’s a delicious tasty treat that’s truly gotten it’s fingers in everywhere.

History of Bacon Day

The origins of Bacon stretches back into the middle ages, with the name originating in Middle English from the word “Bacoun”. Following it back you find it in France as Bako, Germany as Bakko, and old Teutonic as Backe. All of these words mean “back”, and what’s that tell us about Bacon? Piggy got back. But that’s not even the earliest example of bacon, the first bacon was known to come from the Romans, and was known as ‘Petaso’.

Bacon has been a popular method of preserving meat and adding a delicious flavor to it by soaking it in a specialized brine. There were even certain breeds that were specially bred for their copious back meat, and those were the Yorkshire and Tamworth. But it wasn’t always just the back meat that was referred to as Bacon, at one time it referenced any kind of preserved pork, but that usage fell out of practice in the 17th Century.

BOLO - Be On The Lookout ALERT

Presidential Directive #755.689 the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, has released the following nationwide BOLO alert to assist in the apprehension of suspected Russian hackers and election saboteurs.

In accordance with current U.S. intelligence protocols, and to ensure the validity of the claims against the suspects, the White House has officially declassified and released clear and convincing evidence of their nefarious deeds suspected earlier this summer.

Previously withheld CCTV images capture the DNC hacking just prior to the incident. This  concrete evidence has been declassified to substantiate the need for official sanctions:

Today is Friday, Dec. 30, the 365th day of 2016. There is one day left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Dec. 30, 1916, Grigory Rasputin, the so-called "Mad Monk" who wielded considerable influence with Czar Nicholas II, was killed by a group of Russian noblemen in St. Petersburg.

On this date:

In 1853, the United States and Mexico signed a treaty under which the U.S. agreed to buy some 45,000 square miles of land from Mexico for $10 million in a deal known as the Gadsden Purchase.

In 1865, author Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India.

In 1905, the Franz Lehar operetta "The Merry Widow" premiered in Vienna.

In 1922, Vladimir I. Lenin proclaimed the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which lasted nearly seven decades before dissolving in Dec. 1991.

In 1936, the United Auto Workers union staged its first "sit-down" strike at the General Motors Fisher Body Plant No. 1 in Flint, Michigan. (The strike lasted until Feb. 11, 1937.)

In 1940, California's first freeway, the Arroyo Seco Parkway connecting Los Angeles and Pasadena, was officially opened.

In 1954, Olympic gold medal runner Malvin G. Whitfield became the first black recipient of the James E. Sullivan Award for amateur athletes.

In 1965, Ferdinand Marcos was inaugurated for his first term as president of the Philippines.

In 1979, Broadway composer Richard Rodgers died in New York at age 77.

In 1989, a Northwest Airlines DC-10, which had been the target of a telephoned threat, flew safely from Paris to Detroit with 22 passengers amid extra-tight security.

In 1994, a gunman walked into a pair of suburban Boston abortion clinics and opened fire, killing two employees. (John C. Salvi III was later convicted of murder; he died in prison, an apparent suicide.)

In 1999, former Beatle George Harrison fought off a knife-wielding intruder who'd broken into his mansion west of London and stabbed him in the chest. (Michael Abram was later acquitted of attempted murder by reason of insanity.)

Ten years ago: Iraqis awoke to news that Saddam Hussein had been hanged earlier that morning; victims of his three decades of autocratic rule took to the streets to celebrate. A state funeral service was held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for former President Gerald R. Ford. More than 8,500 James Brown fans filled an arena in Augusta, Georgia, for a final, joyful farewell to the "Godfather of Soul." Gerald "Wash" Washington, the first black mayor-elect of Westlake, Louisiana, was found shot to death in a parking lot; authorities ruled his death a suicide, a conclusion disputed by his family.

Five years ago: North Korea warned the world there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government following Kim Jong Il's death as Pyongyang strengthened his son and heir's authority with a new title: "Great Leader." Russell Brand announced that he and Katy Perry were divorcing after 14 months of what appeared to be a storybook marriage. British cartoonist Ronald Searle, 91, died in Draguignan, France.

One year ago: Bill Cosby was charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004; it was the first criminal case brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as "America's Dad."

P. J. O'Rourke
The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to.

Bill Vaughan
An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

Oscar Wilde
Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account.

2nd - buy some champagne for New Years

3rd - take care of plate renewal on her car

4th - lunch with the Warden

5th - take a nap

And next - WTF Knows but hopefully warm enough for a cigar.

Morning Cigar Summary

Uncle Lee's for $37.50/box but we don't know where. ::).   Perhaps Tony will unveil that secret when he wakes up, unless he falls through the floor again.

5 Vegas A at the FU

Mashing at Famous but pretty Meh all the way except MF #4's (Lancero) @ 5/$34 is pretty decent these days.   They also have EPC Dona Elenas @ 10/$59 but I have no idea if that is a good deal or not.

Flip Day at the Sister
Uncle Lees are CI's daily deal, morning folks

Wonder if Flip is at the Carnegie Deli closing, seems like his kind of place.
I'm old and tired, i barley make the two blocks from the train Penn Station to the office.
Although this morning I stopped twice, once at B & H photo for a 10 foot toslink (digital fiber optic
cable) for the new TV to the older Denon 483 that is in the living room,  it's wired for surround sound.
and some combnation egg drop/wonton soup, to have as lunch.

As Travellin Dave says:  On with the day.

1st up - get an inspection sticker on the Wardens car so I can renew the plates.  What a ripoff bullshit deal those inspections are.

2nd - buy some champagne for New Years

3rd - take care of plate renewal on her car

4th - lunch with the Warden

5th - take a nap

And next - WTF Knows but hopefully warm enough for a cigar.
Item 2 Vueve Cliquot Ponsardin Orange label, unless you have deeper pockets,
then get the VCP Le Grand Dame.

i like a good M&R Asti, but my sisters have been brain washed, by our hairstylist,
cousin through marraige, he swears by Verdi - not Asti, but Italian wine flavored Colt 45.
the stuff is swill, I can't drink it, last Christmas Eve, one brother came with, Andre Pink champagne.
my youngest brother has supplied us with LR Cristal, and Opus One.  so I can't complain too
much.

Difficult to confirm or besmirch what one hasn't drunk.  I've had VC, but never the marques you mentioned. I dunno, I think even cheap Champagne is quite drinkable, so long as it's actually Champagne and it's Brut.

I haven't yet.  The guys I gave boxes to for Christmas have each smoked one and gave it rave reviews, but none of those guys have terribly refined palates (including my dad) so I don't put much stock in their raves.  I kept a box for myself, but I'm going to give it a few weeks rest before I try one.

I thought I was jumping on the bandwagon.  There was a significant amount of coverage here, so I bought some to try.

I've had the white label, didn't realize that was the vintage.  Obviously I wasn't the one buying.  It was at my dad's wedding reception, so I presume it was The Tycoon that bought it, since he picked up the tab for all the alcohol.

You can get the "real" thing here for about $40, and wine doesn't have that much of a tax burden.

Not that I care what the French think is "real".  Imagine Cuba trying to insist that a rolled bundle of tobacco in a tobacco wrapper couldn't be called a cigar unless it was made in Havana.

There is no such thing as cheap champagne anymore , sparkling wine is the cheaper varieties and there is some very good stuff in the $10-20 range or in your commie state probably $20-30.

Don't matter WTF you think if not from the Champagne Region it is not champagne it is sparkling wine.
If it's made the same way, from the same variety of grapes, it's Champagne...not that I particularly care what anyone calls it.  French grapes were wiped out by blight, and were replaced by grapes from the US, specifically California.  So anything unique about the Champagne region was lost, at least as far as the grapes are concerned.  All that's left is the method.  Everything else is window dressing.

I am drinking some bourbon from the bourbon region of Kentucky.
Made with grain grown in Iowa, or Washington, or Nebraska.  Ain't no magic in Bourbon County.  It's just window dressing.

I've seen blush/pink/rosé but why isn't there such a thing as red sparkling wine?
Yes, it is called carbonated grape juice and usually branded Welches.
No, seriously.

Lambrusco seems to be the dominant sparkling red wine.   But there are others - shiraz, burgundy.  Google search turns up a goodly number.

I can only tell how many have responded but not specifically who. I've learned that the 2nd day has been useless because it appears everyone who was going to respond, did so yesterday.

Lambrusco used to be a favorite around HS to college years.
