December 8 is............Brownie Day (Yum)

Brownies, that rich, decadent, purely hedonistic blend of cake and cookie that feels amazing in your mouth and leaves you craving more. There’s a million different derivations of how to make these delicious treats, but there’s one thing they all have in common. Levels of chocolate so thick and rich they should be illegal. So popular are they that you can find them served as the foundation for sundaes, they can be found in milkshakes, and there’s even been breakfast cereal based on them. Brownie Day is your chance to get in and indulge in all that decadent goodness you’ve avoided the rest of the year, or at least an opportunity to go into some serious brownie overload.

History of Brownie Day

The first brownies ever made set the bar for the hedonistic indulgence that was to follow, created for a fair luncheon in the late 1800’s, the first variety of these was found bedecked in an apricot glaze and inundated with delicious walnuts. To this day the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago serves the same recipe as that served to these ladies well over a hundred years ago.

Brownie Day was established by the millions of fans of this chocolatey-cakey treat, and the recipes that have cropped up over the years have been legion. From Chocolate Mint brownies to those made with rich swirls of caramel, the variations of brownie are limited only by the extent of your imagination.

Today is Thursday, Dec. 8, the 343rd day of 2016. There are 23 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Dec. 8, 1941, the United States entered World War II as Congress declared war against Imperial Japan, a day after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On this date:

In 1765, Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin, was born in Westborough, Massachusetts.

In 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which holds that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was free of original sin from the moment of her own conception.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction for the South.

In 1914, "Watch Your Step," the first musical revue to feature a score composed entirely by Irving Berlin, opened in New York.

In 1940, the Chicago Bears defeated the Washington Redskins, 73-0, in the NFL Championship Game, which was carried on network radio for the first time by the Mutual Broadcasting System (the announcer was Red Barber).

In 1949, the Chinese Nationalist government moved from the Chinese mainland to Formosa as the Communists pressed their attacks.

In 1962, the first session of the Second Vatican Council was formally adjourned. Typographers went on a 114-day strike against four New York City newspapers.

In 1972, a United Airlines Boeing 737 crashed while attempting to land at Chicago-Midway Airport, killing 43 of the 61 people on board, as well as two people on the ground; among the dead were Dorothy Hunt, wife of Watergate conspirator E. Howard Hunt, U.S. Rep. George W. Collins, D-Ill., and CBS News correspondent Michele Clark.

In 1980, rock star John Lennon was shot to death outside his New York City apartment building by an apparently deranged fan.

In 1982, a man demanding an end to nuclear weapons held the Washington Monument hostage, threatening to blow it up with explosives he claimed were inside a van. (After a 10-hour standoff, Norman D. Mayer was shot dead by police; it turned out there were no explosives.)

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev signed a treaty at the White House calling for destruction of intermediate-range nuclear missiles.

In 1991, Russia, Byelorussia and Ukraine declared the Soviet national government dead, forging a new alliance to be known as the Commonwealth of Independent States. AIDS patient Kimberly Bergalis, who had contracted the disease from her dentist, died in Fort Pierce, Florida, at age 23.

Ten years ago: A gunman went on a rampage inside a downtown Chicago law firm specializing in intellectual property and patents, killing three people before being shot dead by police. The House ethics committee concluded that Republican lawmakers and aides had failed for a decade to protect male pages from sexual overtures by former Florida Congressman Mark Foley, but that they had broken no rules and should not be punished. Former San Francisco Giants shortstop Jose Uribe, 47, was killed in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic.

Five years ago: Former MF Global CEO Jon Corzine (KOHR'-zyn) was called before Congress to explain the collapse of the securities firm just over a month earlier; Corzine told the House Agriculture Committee he didn't know what happened to an estimated $1.2 billion in missing clients' money. The 161-day NBA lockout ended when owners and players ratified the new collective bargaining agreement.

One year ago: China declared its first ever red smog alert as poisonous air quality forced the government to close schools, order motorists off the road and shut down factories in and around Beijing.

I'm not that elaborate.

One good thing about those elves is that they get the kids to do things. The boys had made a huge mess in the playroom (attic) and with the slightest suggestion from the elves two nights ago, they were up there yesterday picking it all up.

It's considered to have addictive qualities. I should have said, do you allow yourself to take medications with pseudoephedrine?
Do you mean medications that work?
...and require more paperwork than buying a car?

not sure what pseudoephedrine is. seeing how I've had no health insurance since I've left NY, I depend on Canada, India, and China for what meds I need to stop the flares of RA. I take vitamins only or ibuprofen for inflammation and generic aleve for pain occasionally. come April medicare kicks in and I've talked to a few health insurance providers for an 'advantage' plan that best suits my needs.

It was the active ingredient in most sinus/cold medicines.
Because it is a precurser to methamphetamine, it can still be gotten, but is one of those items that you have to take the ticket up to the pharmacist and sign a paper to receive. I think you can get like 2 boxes a month.  It has been replaced primarily by phenylephrine which is generally considered adequate but less effective.

My guess would be they are still manufacturing....While it is considered a limited release, I don't know that they put a specific number on it.

Well this is considered "over the counter" but it's very controlled and kept behind the counter. Like Dave mentioned, it can be used to make meth so they'll take a copy of your ID and have you sign your life away before handing it over.

The bottom line: it's a hassle to get but it works well.

Waffle fries and Potato Rosti burger.....but only in Canada....

The Potato Rosti Burger, it’s McDonald’s answer to fast-food holiday malaise. You can also consider it a breakfast burger, given that the ingredients include bacon pieces, potato rosti (hash brown patty), cheddar, and cheese sauce on a toasted, rolled-oat-topped bun.

Time to hit the road, get ready for concert #1 tonight. Roads still looking ok, despite the all-day snow, hopefully smooth sailing home. Hazzuh!

I'm sure they just fell between the seats like Clark Griswald's Christmas bonus... they expire on the 11th, so there's still time for the various internet sites to get them out.  ;)

Over rice in Louisiana, never with beans in Tx and almost always by itself in TX.  Sometimes some Fritos and/or cheese are added.  Tonight - all by itself with a few saltine crackers on the side.

You can make things anyway one likes them but local traditions often drive that.  Try that mess they call chili in Cincinnati!

Good chili is all about the quality of chili powder really, used to be a place in ft worth that sold nothing but chili powders and spices that had some really great chili powders but they closed down years ago.

Some of the best chili I have ever eaten was actually about 10-15 miles from where Dean lives in Crystal River.  At a bar there and the guy called it 3-beer chili, asked him where the name canpme from and he said it was so hot people needed 3 beers to finish a bowl.  By my standards it was warm not really hot but really good..

Categories of cuisine, like most things, are terms of convenience. Pasta is considered "Italian", but the noodles were invented in China and tomatoes came from the Americas. Lots of chilis used in Asian, Arab, and Eastern European cuisine - but the chili also comes from the Americas. And the French have been using American grapes to make wine for more than a century. Meanwhile, the French insisted Malbec was dead because the grape had gone extinct...then it turned out the Argentinians were growing it and now they own the Malbec market.

Enjoy me some Malbec too. Goes nicely with Chili. And I've had some decent ones from Chile. Ok, this is getting confusing. Time to go see my daughter's middle school play. See yuz.

The thing that takes some getting used to is the base/sauce.  Some different and interesting spices and flavors:

Place the beef mixture over medium heat, and stir in the onions, tomato sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, chocolate, chili powder, salt, cumin, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, cloves, allspice berries, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 hours.

The Baylor mess just won't go away...

AUSTIN, Texas -- Former Baylor football coach Art Briles sued three school regents and a vice president for libel and slander Thursday, accusing them of falsely stating he knew of reported assaults and alleged gang rapes by players and didn't report them.

The lawsuit also asserts that Baylor officials conspired to damage his reputation and keep him from getting another coaching job. It also seeks damages for emotional distress and likely ending his career as a coach "on any level."

"Some people think themselves above the law, but the laws of Texas establish accountability for everyone, even renegade, self-dealing regents of a Christian university," Briles' lawsuit states.

The lawsuit was filed in Llano County in central Texas. It names Baylor regents Chairman Ronald Murff, board members J. Cary Gray and David Harper, and Baylor Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Reagan Ramsower.
