December 1 is............... Eat A Red Apple Day

When one thinks of an apple it isn’t the vibrant green color of the McIntosh apple that jumps to mind, nor is it the mottled red and yellow stripes of the Fuji Apple, no indeed. The apple that comes to mind, is the Red Delicious apple. The Red Delicious is so engrained in our minds as what an apple look likes, that if you ask a child to draw an apple, without question it’s going to be the red crayon they reach for. That’s why Eat A Red Apple Day exists, to celebrate this iconic member of the apple family, and its history.

History of Eat A Red Apple Day

America became quite the hotbed of apple development after the travels of Johnny Appleseed, and by the late 1800’s apple trees were everywhere in an amazing rainbow of delicious variety. So much so, in fact, that apple varieties were being developed as a response to the ease of transporting apples on a commercial level around the US. The ‘Ben Davis’ Apple was the reigning king of apples in 1880, due to its ability to handle rough growing conditions and its ability to keep a long time. But it wasn’t considered the best tasting one, and as moving produce from farm to store became easier better tasting was winning out.

Red Delicious held its position as the most popular apple in the world well into the 1980’s, when its popularity began to decline. How popular was it, exactly? Washington State is one of the biggest producers of apples, and the red delicious constituted 75% of the state’s production. While it’s shrunk to 1/3rd of that amount since, it’s still a massive part of the world’s production of apples.

Today is Thursday, Dec. 1, the 336th day of 2016. There are 30 days left in the year.

Today's Highlights in History:

On Dec. 1, 1941, Japan's Emperor Hirohito approved waging war against the United States, Britain and the Netherlands after his government rejected U.S. demands contained in the Hull Note. British-born journalist and broadcaster Alistair Cooke became a naturalized American citizen.

On this date:

In 1824, the presidential election was turned over to the U.S. House of Representatives when a deadlock developed between John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford and Henry Clay. (Adams ended up the winner.)

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln sent his Second Annual Message to Congress, in which he called for the abolition of slavery, and went on to say, "Fellow-citizens, we can not escape history. We of this Congress and this Administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves."

In 1866, Welsh surveyor Sir George Everest (EEV'-rihst), 79, whose name had been conferred upon the mountain in Nepal by the Royal Geographical Society over his objections, died in London.

In 1921, the Navy flew the first non-rigid dirigible to use helium; the C-7 traveled from Hampton Roads, Virginia, to Washington, D.C.

In 1934, Soviet communist official Sergei M. Kirov, an associate of Josef Stalin, was assassinated in Leningrad, resulting in a massive purge.

In 1942, nationwide gasoline rationing went into effect in the United States.

In 1955, Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus; the incident sparked a year-long boycott of the buses by blacks.

In 1965, an airlift of refugees from Cuba to the United States began in which thousands of Cubans were allowed to leave their homeland.

In 1969, the U.S. government held its first draft lottery since World War II.

In 1973, David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, died in Tel Aviv at age 87.

In 1989, Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev met with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.

In 1990, British and French workers digging the Channel Tunnel between their countries finally met after knocking out a passage in a service tunnel.

Ten years ago: Felipe Calderon (fay-LEE'-pay kahl-duh-ROHN') took the oath of office as Mexico's president amid catcalls and brawling lawmakers, a chaotic start to a term in which he pledged to heal a country divided by his narrow victory. Officials reported that Typhoon Durian had killed as many as 200 people when it tore through the eastern Philippines (the storm was eventually blamed for some 1,400 deaths).

Five years ago: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with opposition leader and Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi (ahng sahn soo chee) during a visit to Myanmar. Bobby Valentine was named the 45th manager of the Boston Red Sox. (However, he was fired after one season.)

One year ago: President Barack Obama told a U.N. climate conference that parts of the global warming deal being negotiated in Paris should be legally binding on the countries that signed on, setting up a potential fight with Republicans at home. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the United States was expanding its special operations forces in Iraq and Syria to help fight Islamic State militants. The Philadelphia 76ers ended the longest losing streak in the history of major professional sports in the United States, topping the Los Angeles Lakers 103-91 to snap a 28-game skid.

To be more precise, I lit a short corona gorda. It had definite barnyard aroma on the prelight. The cold draw has those classic tobacco flavors, almost Cubanesque.

Once I lit the cigar I tasted the raspberry thumbprint cookies right away in the retrohale. No joke. It's also got a good amount of white pepper spice in the middle of the tongue.

I absolutely love this stick. Flawless DE construction, draw, and burn with voluminous clouds of smoke.

I'm drinking a sparkling water to clense the palate.

After the first inch the flavors remain but the pepper has subsided. Ash fell off by itself after about an inch and a half.

better yet, I created a spreadsheet listing her income and her bills, due dates, balances, and when to pay what when their SS and pension checks come in. one check the 1st of the month, one the 3rd, and one the 3rd Wednesday. she SHOULD have quite a bit left over if she doesn't spend stupidly. told her she has to do exactly as I've written out or else she's on her own again and they close her bank account.

I am certainly no fan of Chip and Joanna but this is some kind of bunch of bull$hit here:

On Tuesday, Buzzfeed published an "expose" on the very popular and very Christian "Fixer Upper" couple Chip and Joanna Gaines, and specifically their pastor and his beliefs.

Writer Kate Aurthur - with the support of Buzzfeed's editor-in-chief Ben Smith - pointed out that the Gaines' church, Antioch Community Church in Waco and pastor Jimmy Seibert, preaches against gay marriage and homosexuality.

Keep in mind, that the Gaines' have never once stated their beliefs about homosexuality and the Buzzfeed article clearly states that they didn't receive a response to the matter from anyone from "Fixer Upper" or from HGTV, the network that the airs the show.

Former LSU coach Les Miles and former Baylor coach Art Briles have expressed interest and the school will also take a look at West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen. UH interim coach/defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and offensive coordinator Major Applewhite are also under consideration.

You guys didn't get the memo. We have redefined tolerance. It no longer means live and let live, or agree to disagree, or any of that nonsense. It now means you must agree with the party line or be ostracized and destroyed.
But we still love you.
We do?

As long as they don't get preachy on the show, I don't care what they do in their private life.  I did notice they only have Christian bands at their Holidays at the Silo's next Saturday.
Indeed, me too.

I'm offended, dammit. You'll be hearing from my lawyer. Right after I finish calling your boss and explaining that you mocked my orientation.
