September 25 is … National Comic Book Day

In 1837 there came a small, seemingly inconsequential shift in the way stories were told. One Obadiah Oldbuck was drawn into existence as a series of sequential pictures with text captions. It was originally created with the purpose of being a diversion for the creator and his friends, but all too unexpected it became incredibly popular in both the US and France. This is often considered the first comic, and Rodolphe Töpffer is often considered the father of the genre. Comic Book Day honors this man and everything that has come to follow from that first humble publication.

History of Comic Book Day
While Obadiah Oldbuck was considered to be the first comic, in 1933 the publication known as Famous Funnies is considered to be the first actual comic book. It was produced in the United States from a collection of comic strips that had appeared earlier in newspapers. While the term ‘comic’ implies that the tone of these strips are always humorous, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Comics have been used as a medium for telling stories of all kinds, and while the debate raged for a long time as to whether or not comics could be considered literature, it was the publication of Maus that settled that argument once and for all.

Today is Sunday, Sept. 25, the 269th day of 2016. There are 97 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Sept. 25, 1956, the first trans-Atlantic telephone cable officially went into service with a three-way ceremonial call between New York, Ottawa and London.

On this date:

In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and sighted the Pacific Ocean.

In 1690, one of the earliest American newspapers, Publick Occurrences, published its first - and last - edition in Boston.

In 1775, American Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen was captured by the British as he led an attack on Montreal. (Allen was released by the British in 1778.)

In 1789, the first United States Congress adopted 12 amendments to the Constitution and sent them to the states for ratification. (Ten of the amendments became the Bill of Rights.)

In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed a measure establishing Sequoia National Park.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson collapsed after a speech in Pueblo, Colorado, during a national speaking tour in support of the Treaty of Versailles (vehr-SY').

In 1932, the Spanish region of Catalonia received a Charter of Autonomy (however, the Charter was revoked by Francisco Franco at the end of the Spanish Civil War).

In 1957, nine black students who'd been forced to withdraw from Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, because of unruly white crowds were escorted to class by members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division.

In 1962, Sonny Liston knocked out Floyd Patterson in round one to win the world heavyweight title at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

In 1978, 144 people were killed when a Pacific Southwest Airlines Boeing 727 and a private plane collided over San Diego.

In 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor was sworn in as the first female justice on the Supreme Court.

In 1991, Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie died in Lyon, France, at age 77.

Ten years ago: British forces in Iraq shot and killed Omar al-Farouq, a leading al-Qaida terrorist, more than a year after he embarrassed the U.S. military by escaping from a maximum security military prison in Afghanistan. Four French tourists kidnapped in Yemen were freed after more than two weeks in captivity. The Louisiana Superdome, a symbol of misery during Hurricane Katrina, reopened for a New Orleans Saints game. (The Saints defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 23-3.)

Five years ago: Declaring they'd been detained because of their nationality, not their actions, Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer, two American hikers held for more than two years in an Iranian prison, returned to the United States. Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah decreed that women would, for the first time, have the right to vote and run in local elections due in 2015. Wangari Maathai (wan-GAH'-ree mah-DY'), 71, the first African woman recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in Nairobi.

One year ago: House Speaker John Boehner abruptly announced his resignation. President Barack Obama laid out a fresh threat of sanctions for economic espionage emanating from China, even as he and President Xi Jinping pledged their countries would not conduct or support such hacking. During a visit to New York City, Pope Francis offered comfort to 9/11 victims' families at ground zero, warnings to world leaders at the United Nations and encouragement to schoolchildren in Harlem. International leaders at the United Nations approved an ambitious 15-year plan to tackle the world's biggest problems, from eradicating poverty to preserving the planet

Man suspected of killing 5 people at Burlington mall arrested near Oak Harbor

OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- A man suspected of killing five people at Burlington's Cascade Mall on Friday night has been arrested in Oak Harbor after a 20-hour manhunt.
The Washington State Patrol identified the suspect as 20-year-old Arcan Cetin. Cetin emigrated from Turkey and is a legal U.S resident, according to an initial police investigation. Cetin graduated in 2015 from Oak Harbor High School.

During a Saturday night news conference, police said they were able to identify their suspect via tips and surveillance video showing the suspect's car. Surveillance video showed Cetin come into the store unarmed about 10 minutes before the shooting. Police believe he went back to the car to get the rifle.

Not a lot of unexpected results on the college football fields for week 4.

LSU Tigers stunk up the stadium in Auburn losing 13-18 in another final second fiasco.  Good job Les!

My LA Tech Bulldogs go down to Middle TN 34-38 giving up 21 points in the 4th quarter, rebuilding seems to have faltered there.

It was a disaster week for Louisiana Football!

SC Game Cocks go down to Kentucky 10-17

GA was demolished by Ole Miss 45-14, rebuilding at GA is not going so well.

In one of the best games of the day TN made a 35 point comeback in the 2nd half to beat Florida 38-28.  TN is #1 in the SEC East.

Alabama remains undefeated and #1 in the SEC West.  Should remain #1 in the AP also.

Among the few top 25 upsets (11) Wisconsin defeated (8) Michigan State 30-6

#4 Michigan demolished the child molestor advocates at Penn State 49-10

And then there was the Battle of the Unranked High Tuition Private Schools where Duke defeated Bean and the Irish 38-35 leaving the struggling Irish with a 1-3 record.

Obituary

Musician Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural Jr., who rose from a cotton-picking family in southwest Louisiana to introduce zydeco music to the world through his namesake band Buckwheat Zydeco, has died. He was 68.

His longtime manager Ted Fox told The Associated Press that Dural died Saturday. He had suffered from lung cancer.

Fox said the musician and accordionist died at 1:32 a.m. Louisiana time at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, Louisiana. He gained fame by introducing zydeco music of southwest Louisiana to the world.

"This is one of the world's true genius musicians. A completely natural musician who could just fit in in any scenario," Fox said.

Dural earned his nickname because he had braided hair when he was younger that resembled Buckwheat from The Little Rascals television show. Born Nov. 14, 1947 in Lafayette, Louisiana, Dural was one of 13 children. His father played the accordion but the younger Dural preferred listening to and playing rhythm & blues and learned to play the organ, his obituary said.

As news of his death spread, friends from around the world paid their respects.

Miami Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed Sunday morning after a boat crash in Miami Beach, the team announced.

The 24-year-old Fernandez was one of at least three people killed in the early morning collision.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," a team statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

Sunday's game between the Marlins and the Atlanta Braves was cancelled after the death of the star right hander.

Fernandez was born in Cuba and he attempted to defect three times before finally reaching the U.S. in 2007 with his mother.

Sorry to post and run (trying to get ready for church).  Must be hard for ball players who have just recently faced this pitcher (Nats) to wrap their minds around this, much less his family & teammates.  God rest his soul.

No interest in doing that. I'd rather keep things the way they are. Besides rarely do people buy sites, they just want the domain name. Not sure cigarbanter.com can even fetch me what I paid for it.

Rabalais: For LSU coach Les Miles, perhaps 'fate has decided enough is enough' after Auburn debacle

Late in the game, LSU trailing Auburn 18-13 by what would eventually be the fateful final score, it was obvious we’d seen this movie before.

LSU was getting outplayed, outgained, making enough foolish mistakes to do itself mortal harm. And yet there was Les Miles team with too much pluck, determination and talent (let’s not deny it) to allow itself to be embarrassed and humbled by an already twice humbled Auburn team.

Guess Bean is still on the Notre Dame suicide prevention line conference call.
Probably on hold trying to get through, that line's gotta be busy today.
So bad they might have a webinar going!
"You are joining the conference as a participant. There are 3 million other people in attendance."
"This webinar is free of charge if you are both a Fighting Irish and Cleveland Browns fan"

In that case, you get transferred to someone who can actually help you commit suicide.

From the New Orleans Times Picayune

Time's up for Les Miles, with not a second to waste

AUBURN, Ala. – It's pretty clear now, there's no debate. Firing LSU coach Les Miles should be a snap decision. There should be a $10 million buyout check waiting on his desk in Baton Rouge Sunday morning.

good morning guys. back from church and brunch.

coffee and Partagas Red going watching my lawn get mowed.
Morning Dean of many surprises, watching someone mow your grass does not fit your style. ???
I can picture him twitching in his seat trying to keep himself from getting out there and doing it.
If there was a maintenance contract to mow my lawn, you could bet your ass I'd never beat them to it.
Now there's a surprise.
You all make it seem like you would mow the lawn to a property that you had zero responsibility for just because it needed to be done. I call bullshit on all y'all.
I know that I would, because those guys notoriously wait until the last possible instant to do it, and I hate the way it looks when it starts to get shaggy. But that's just how I am. Wife says I can't just sit and not do anything, I always have to be doing something. I say she sits around doing nothing enough for the both of us. ;)
Well that I can relate to. But again, if it's my house that's one thing. We're talking about a responsibility here that isn't Deano's.

Absolute picture prefect day here. Went to a kids party in a friend's yard.  Plenty of food and beverages available for adults. Good time was had by all.

Cost the dumbass university $12.9 million to buy Miles out and $3.6 million for the offensive coordinator.
