Today is Thursday, Aug. 25, the 238th day of 2016. There are 128 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Aug. 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed an act establishing the National Park Service within the Department of the Interior.

On this date:

In 1718, hundreds of French colonists arrived in Louisiana, with some settling in present-day New Orleans.

In 1825, Uruguay declared independence from Brazil.

In 1921, the United States signed a peace treaty with Germany.

In 1944, during World War II, Paris was liberated by Allied forces after four years of Nazi occupation. Romania declared war on former ally Germany.

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a measure providing pensions for former U.S. presidents and their widows.

In 1960, opening ceremonies were held for the Summer Olympics in Rome.

In 1975, the Bruce Springsteen album "Born to Run" was released by Columbia Records.

In 1981, the U.S. spacecraft Voyager 2 came within 63,000 miles of Saturn's cloud cover, sending back pictures of and data about the ringed planet.

In 1989, Voyager 2 made its closest approach to Neptune, its final planetary target.

In 1998, retired Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell died in Richmond, Virginia, at age 90.

In 2001, Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby (meh-tay mar-it shes-em hoy-bee), a single mother and former waitress, married Norway's Crown Prince Haakon (hoh-uh-kahn) in Oslo. Rhythm-and-blues singer Aaliyah (ah-LEE'-yah) was killed with eight others in a plane crash in the Bahamas; she was 22.

In 2009, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy died at age 77 in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, after a battle with a brain tumor.

Ten years ago: A college student's checked luggage on a Continental Airlines flight that had arrived in Houston from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was found to contain a stick of dynamite, one of six security incidents that day that caused U.S. flights to be diverted, evacuated or searched. Joseph Stefano, who wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," died in Thousand Oaks, California, at age 84.

Five years ago: Fifty-two people were killed in a fire at a casino in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey that was allegedly targeted by a drug cartel. The New York Yankees became the first team in major league history to hit three grand slams in a game, with Robinson Cano, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson connecting in a 22-9 romp over the Oakland Athletics.

One year ago: French authorities formally opened a terrorism investigation into a foiled attack four days earlier; a prosecutor said minutes before he slung an assault rifle across his chest and walked through a high-speed train, suspect Ayoub El-Khazzani of Morocco watched a jihadi video on his cellphone.

Upgraded software in mine overnight then I get about 5 or 6 error messages upon booting up then I finally weed through deleting those then open email to find an email that says ignore and delete error messages they don't know what is causing them. ::)

80 year old neighbor (one of the nicer folks on the block) that left home in the EMS Helicopter yesterday ( +/- $25,000-40,000 cab ride across town) came in from his daily walk and fell down in the shower hitting his head very hard.  Fractured skull (minor issue) and internal hemorrhaging of the brain (very serious issue), multiple hours of surgery immediately following arrival at the hospital.  Don't have any info on a prognosis.

Thanks, he is a pretty interesting guy.  Was an eye surgeon who retired about 15 years ago, loved to fly his airplane but lost his medical certificate about a year ago.  Something that amazed me was he has a family farm over near College Station that has been in his family for over 100 years and on that farm  there is a huge old barn.  In that barn is about 30 or 40 old cars dating back to the 1930's that all crank and run but they never leave there.  Seem he and his father kept every single car they ever owned and when they bought a new one they just parked the old one in that barn only starting each of them every few weeks but never actually drove them around anymore.

good morning guys. off the redhead's boat and at the lady's house to bang together walls. figure they can be painted just as easy after assembly. just noticed the bold print on the building permit: FAILURE TO RECORD NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT MAY RESULT IN YOUR PAYING TWICE FOR IMPROVEMENTS.........
Punch elite and water going here.
What does that even mean.  You pull the permit and then have to tell them you started the work?

If no foundation, plumbing or electrical to inspect before being covered that would make sense but the permit should have designated that.

Dad & Tony smokes up - Perdomo Lot 23's get-um while you can.
Only one problem, neither one of them seem to buy cigars
Can't fault BD, seems like he's got an AWFUL lot of stuff going on at his house at all times. ;)
Dad actually does buy cigars when he sees what he perceives as a deal.  Just the new "lifestyle adjustment" at home interferes with his posting.

Now Tony,  ??? ??? ???
Tony didn't get a chance to smoke one today like he'd planned, but he'll definitely have one tomorrow. ;)
LMFAO, and it will be one that he has not had in a long time and forgot just how good they were.  Next:  needs to remember to pick up some more of those.

That's funny shit...new laptop with no issues, nice

"Notice of Commencement" isn't the same as those required inspections, or at least doesn't sound like it.  F'kn municipal bldg departments, each one different with their own procedures and requirements.

Very wealthy guy from the Uvalde area (South Texas) paid an obscene $500,000 for 2 lots across the street from me to build a large house with an airplane hanger (land has airport frontage) and fought with the city for over a year trying to get some house plans approved (saw the plans a beautiful home and probably a $2 million+ setup with the hanger. Refused to pay off the corrupt mayor and city manager so finally put the land up for sale a couple of weeks ago.

Morning, muchachos. Rode the new bike in again, after seeing some friends off to the HOG rally in Spokane. Wish I was going with them, but going sailing with my dad and sons this weekend.

Still, was hard to take the exit to work. Bike wanted to keep going.

You don't use a hammer when you're working on the plumbing? I knew I was doing something wrong.
And where's her chain saw?
Exactly. She clearly skated through her licensing exam.

Sure glad I paid a plumber!  He has been stuck in that cabinet for 20 minutes and still at it.  Also I would have been one tool short of a full set to be able to do it.

No crack here though!

Ask someone to drink a glass of gasoline and they'll look at you like your crazy. Tell them it's an intoxicant that will knock them on their ass, and they'll drink all you can poor.

People are really, really stupid.

That sucks. Hope he pulls through.
That's pretty darn cool. Almost 10 hours later but finally getting a chance to respond.

Good evening to all. Hope the jam has treated you well.
