6 Notre Dame Football Players Arrested in 2 Incidents

Five Notre Dame football players were arrested after Indiana State Police said a trooper found marijuana and a loaded handgun in their car, while a sixth player was arrested in a separate incident and accused of punching a police officer.

State Police said a trooper stopped a car Friday night in Fulton County about 35 miles south of South Bend for speeding. The trooper detected the odor of marijuana and with the help of a drug-sniffing dog, he found the marijuana and handgun, police said.

The university confirmed all five of the people arrested in that incident are football players: cornerback Ashton White, starting safety Max Redfield, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson Jr., linebacker Te'von Coney and Dexter Williams, who's one of three running backs expected to play regularly for the Irish this season.

All five were released Saturday afternoon from the Fulton County Jail in Rochester, where they had been held on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of an unlicensed handgun.

Notre Dame also confirmed the arrest of a sixth player, cornerback Devin Butler, early Saturday in South Bend.

South Bend police spokesman Lt. Joe Galea said Butler was arrested on a preliminary felony charge of resisting law enforcement causing bodily injury to a law enforcement officer stemming from an incident outside a South Bend bar.

Another Baylor football player is generating headlines of the unsavory kind.

Wide receiver Ishmael Zamora, a Houston area native, will be disciplined after being caught on video whipping his dog with a belt and also stomping on the animal.

Today is Sunday, Aug. 21, the 234th day of 2016. There are 132 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Aug. 21, 1831, Nat Turner launched a violent slave rebellion in Virginia resulting in the deaths of at least 55 whites. (Turner was later executed.)

On this date:

In 1858, the first of seven debates between Illinois senatorial contenders Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas took place.

In 1911, Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris. (The painting was recovered two years later in Italy.)

In 1940, exiled Communist revolutionary Leon Trotsky died in a Mexican hospital from wounds inflicted by an assassin the day before.

In 1944, the United States, Britain, the Soviet Union and China opened talks at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington that helped pave the way for establishment of the United Nations. (The talks concluded on Oct. 7.)

In 1945, President Harry S. Truman ended the Lend-Lease program that had shipped some $50 billion in aid supplies to America's allies during World War II.

In 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an executive order making Hawaii the 50th state.

In 1963, martial law was declared in South Vietnam as police and army troops began a violent crackdown on Buddhist anti-government protesters.

In 1972, the Republican National Convention opened in Miami Beach.

In 1983, Philippine opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr., ending a self-imposed exile in the United States, was shot dead moments after stepping off a plane at Manila International Airport. The musical play "La Cage Aux Folles" opened on Broadway.

In 1986, more than 1,700 people died when toxic gas erupted from a volcanic lake in the West African nation of Cameroon.

In 1991, the hard-line coup against Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev collapsed in the face of a popular uprising led by Russian Federation President Boris N. Yeltsin.

In 1993, in a serious setback for NASA, engineers lost contact with the Mars Observer spacecraft as it was about to reach the red planet on a $980 million mission.

Ten years ago: A defiant Saddam Hussein refused to enter a plea on genocide charges and dismissed the court as illegitimate at the start of his second trial, this one concerning the widescale killings of tens of thousands of Kurds in 1987-88. British prosecutors announced that 11 people had been charged in an alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners bound for the U.S. (Nine British Muslims were later convicted in connection with the plot.) A train crash on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, killed at least 58 people. A bomb blast tore through a Moscow market, killing at least 14 people.

Five years ago: Euphoric Libyan rebels raced into Tripoli and took control of the center with little resistance as Moammar Gadhafi's defenses collapsed and his four-decade regime appeared to be crumbling. In a statement from Martha's Vineyard, where he was vacationing with his family, President Barack Obama called on Gadhafi to acknowledge reality and step down.

One year ago: A trio of Americans, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Spencer Stone, National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos and college student Anthony Sadler, and a British businessman, Chris Norman, tackled and disarmed a Moroccan gunman on a high-speed train between Amsterdam and Paris. First Lt. Shaye Haver of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Capt. Kristen Griest of Orange, Connecticut, became the first female soldiers to complete the Army's rigorous Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Mike Fiers pitched the second no-hitter in the major leagues in nine days, leading the Houston Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

More summer vacation fun:

Texas A&M junior linebacker Josh Walker has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest Friday in a domestic incident.

Florida State freshman quarterback Malik Henry has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, coach Jimbo Fisher announced Saturday.

I do but not without plenty of annoyances!!!!!  Wardens have no concept of the economics of construction but even worse they don't want to have any concept of such."oh let's move this wall a foot......."   "But how much can one more foot cost........"

Spent all afternoon yesterday trying to explain the basic economics of Fuk'n carpet and got nowhere.

We need to install new carpet in this house to sell it and there is 1600+ sq ft of carpet which needs to last 6-10 months.....  Well this will be so much nicer and it is only $2.50/sq ft more.......  Well that cheap stuff just does not feel as good..........  Well how will that extra $4000 feel in your pocket?????  The cheapest thing we can buy is better than a builder would put in.........  Well I want it to look nice.........

it's getting to be snowbird time. what rentals that are available are short term and expensive. realtor #1 is an airhead and I 'fired' her. realtor #2 is trying hard to find me a little 2 bedroom house in a country setting. she says I'd be money ahead if I bought a house instead of renting one. I told her that if she would find one that came with a maintenance person I consider it.

All Democrat run state with top 5 strictest gun laws in the entire U.S. So, just how does this happen?

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) -- Thirteen people have been shot and wounded at a house party in Connecticut.

Police in Bridgeport were called to the home around 1:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of shots fired.

Responding officers found 11 men and two women suffering from gunshot wounds. All of the victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment. One of the women suffered a gunshot wound to the face and is in critical condition.

Police believe there were at least two shooters and that they fired through some hedges in the yard of an adjacent home. There's no word on a possible motive.

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bridgeport police.

Follow-up to the ND 6 player arrests...

The fallout from Notre Dame's six player, two-arrest Friday evening has begun. Brian Kelly's discipline decision includes the immediate dismissal of Max Redfield, a senior starting safety and NFL Draft prospect, and an indefinite suspension for cornerback Devin Butler.

While the other four players arrested remain with the team, Kelly said they could face further discipline after the courts and campus judicial system render decisions. He reminded all that those "processes could yet impact their standing with the University and the team."

Formidable challenges.  Looks like it might have to slide to later in September.  Thursdays still generally good?

Not this year, at the time we needed to commit to the house my MIL was not doing well (yes the one that's staying with us) and we decided we couldn't all be that far away so we didn't book the house and we're all now doing different things. We are going to Bayhead for the week, Jersey shore
