Today is Sunday, Aug. 14, the 227th day of 2016. There are 139 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Aug. 14, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the Atlantic Charter, a joint declaration that expressed hopes for "a better future for the world."

On this date:

In 1848, the Oregon Territory was created.

In 1900, international forces, including U.S. Marines, entered Beijing to put down the Boxer Rebellion, which was aimed at purging China of foreign influence.

In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.

In 1936, Rainey Bethea became the last man to be publicly executed in the United States as he was hanged in Owensboro, Kentucky, for raping 70-year-old Lischia Edwards.

In 1945, President Harry S. Truman announced that Imperial Japan had surrendered unconditionally, ending World War II.

In 1947, Pakistan became independent of British rule.

In 1951, newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, 88, died in Beverly Hills, California.

In 1956, German dramatist Bertolt Brecht died in East Berlin at age 58.

In 1969, British troops went to Northern Ireland to intervene in sectarian violence between Protestants and Roman Catholics.

In 1973, U.S. bombing of Cambodia came to a halt.

In 1980, workers went on strike at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk (guh-DANSK'), Poland, in a job action that resulted in creation of the Solidarity labor movement. Actress-model Dorothy Stratten, 20, was shot to death by her estranged husband and manager, Paul Snider, who then killed himself.

In 1996, the Republican national convention in San Diego nominated Bob Dole for president and Jack Kemp for vice president.

Ten years ago: Israel halted its offensive against Hezbollah guerrillas as a U.N.-imposed cease-fire went into effect after a month of warfare that had killed more than 900 people. Cuban state television aired the first photos of Fidel Castro since he stepped down as president to recover from surgery, showing the bedridden Cuban leader talking with his brother Raul as well as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (OO'-goh CHAH'-vez). Actor Bruno Kirby died in Los Angeles at age 57.

Five years ago: Syria used gunboats for the first time to crush the uprising against Bashar Assad's regime, hammering parts of the Mediterranean coastal city of Latakia (lah-tah-KEE'-ah) after thousands marched there to demand the president's ouster. Keegan Bradley won the PGA Championship after staging an amazing comeback to force a three-hole playoff and beat Jason Dufner at Atlanta Athletic Club.

One year ago: The Stars and Stripes rose over the newly reopened U.S. Embassy in Cuba after a half century of often-hostile relations; U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry celebrated the day, but also made an extraordinary, nationally broadcast call for democratic change on the island.

Violence and protests erupted in Milwaukee overnight after a man was fatally shot by police during a foot chase.

Police said the victim, 23, was armed with a handgun and shot dead by an officer after fleeing a traffic stop on Milwaukee’s north side Saturday afternoon.

Hours later angry crowds took to the streets, smashing a police car and setting fire to another. One officer was injured by a flying brick; a gas station and auto-parts store were set alight. Police said gunshots were heard.

Nefataria Gordon said she knew the man who had been killed by the officer. "He was a nice good person. He was really respected. That's why everyone came out. They're angry."

And I'm sure he was just on his way to his grandmothers delivering groceries.

Nice start to my day went outside and the pool had turned green after so much rain (not a real big deal, easy and quick fix) so turned on the pump and put some shock treatment in  which will clear it back up in about 30 minutes or less.  BUT before I even got back into the house BOOM the Fuk'n pump literally blows up.

Pool is 7 years old this month and on the 3rd pool sweep booster pump and this will be the 4th main pump.  Just ordered a new pool sweep this week and this will make 3 of those.

Looked that way for sure but turning green after a huge rainfall is not a big deal as long as you catch it pretty quick. Just dump in a couple of pounds of powered shock (extra high potency chlorine) and it will be fine in 30 minutes, UNLESS the pump blows up.

Now, if you happen to be out of town for a couple of days and it turns green from rain then you got a mess because things go to hell pretty quick and getting it back right can take some extensive effort and hundreds of $ in chemicals.  That happened last year and it was a 2 week nightmare so now we pay a nice high school boy down the street to come tend to it everyday while we are gone for more than 2-3 days.

plus I am reformatting an external 1TB USB3 drive for my daughter, since I am not sure

Asks me what a CFL type bulb is.  Instead of responding, do I look like fucking google, I said CFL Uhhmm compact fluorescent.
say anything fast enough and with conviction, you will be believed!  Excuse me while I go google that.
OK, I have been buying them for years. especially on Black Friday at $0.98 apiece.
Well now there are not many CFL bulbs they are all super expensive LED's
I have a shelf in the tool room filled with about 15 CFL spares.

Morning fellers.   Just a Fishy like drive by turd dropping post, heading out with the warden shortly.
You mean you're not working today?  There goes the development plan... ::)

Good point, but if it isn't on the performance plan, you don't get credit.

Sheesh, the heat migrated here. Technically, it's only 63, but this is the northernmost metro area on the continent, and the sun hurts. Hottest part of the day will be about 4pm, and it will be 87 and muggy.

Oh, don't think they still make light bulbs in this country either, I just know they are a ripoff regardless of where they are made.  Thank you Obama!

They've put out some solid players.  Course on campus is pretty snazzy as well. (was the last active cow pasture when I was there.

I was required to take samples for one course...wasn't from the teats thought... ;)
Also having them on campus allow for good cow tipping practice.
