Today is Sunday, July 31, the 213th day of 2016. There are 153 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 31, 1991, President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in Moscow.

On this date:

In 1715, a fleet of Spanish ships carrying gold, silver and jewelry sank during a hurricane off the east Florida coast; of some 2,500 crew members, more than 1,000 died.

In 1777, the Marquis de Lafayette, a 19-year-old French nobleman, was made a major-general in the American Continental Army.

In 1875, the 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson, died in Carter County, Tennessee, at age 66.

In 1919, Germany's Weimar (VY'-mahr) Constitution was adopted by the republic's National Assembly.

In 1930, the radio character "The Shadow" made his debut as narrator of the "Detective Story Hour" on CBS Radio.

In 1933, the radio series "Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy," made its debut on CBS radio station WBBM in Chicago.

In 1942, Oxfam International had its beginnings as the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief was founded in England.

In 1954, Pakistan's K2 was conquered as two members of an Italian expedition, Achille Compagnoni (ah-KEE'-lay kohm-pahn-YOH'-nee) and Lino Lacedelli (LEE'-noh lah-cheh-DEHL'-ee), reached the summit.

In 1964, the American space probe Ranger 7 reached the moon, transmitting pictures back to Earth before impacting the lunar surface.

In 1972, Democratic vice-presidential candidate Thomas Eagleton withdrew from the ticket with George McGovern following disclosures that Eagleton had once undergone psychiatric treatment.

In 1973, Delta Air Lines Flight 723, a DC-9, crashed while trying to land at Boston's Logan International Airport, killing all 89 people on board.

In 1989, a pro-Iranian group in Lebanon released a grisly videotape showing the body of American hostage William R. Higgins, a Marine lieutenant-colonel, dangling from a rope.

Ten years ago: Cuban President Fidel Castro ceded provisional power to his brother, Raul, after gastrointestinal surgery. (Raul Castro became president of Cuba in February 2008.)

Five years ago: Ending a stalemate, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders announced an agreement on emergency legislation to avert the nation's first-ever financial default. Yani Tseng won the Women's British Open for the second straight year, beating Brittany Lang by four strokes. Florida handed the Atlanta Braves their 10,000th loss in franchise history; with the 3-1 loss, the Braves became the second team in big league history with 10,000 losses (the Phillies reached that mark in 2007).

One year ago: A firebombing in the West Bank village of Duma killed 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh and his parents; Amiram Ben-Uliel, a Jewish settler, has been charged with murder. Beijing was awarded the 2022 Winter Olympics to become the first city to host both the winter and summer games. Professional wrestler-turned-actor "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, 61, died in Hollywood. Former U.S. senator and Secretary of Health and Human Services Ricahrd S. Schweiker, 89, died in Pomona, New Jersey.

Had an attempted assault with shots fired across the street from my office around 2:30 this morning. 15 minutes earlier had a shootout in the street  2 blocks away which killed one person and injured 4.  That one was in the jam-packed 6th street entertainment district.

Cops say the two events were unrelated.
Or as they say in Chicago, a quiet Saturday.

For over three centuries, until 1970, all Royal Navy vessels would ring out their ship's bells just before noon every day. The famous call, 'Up Spirits' would go out, calling sailors to report to deck and receive their daily 70ml ‘tot’, or shot, of rum.

date_1731
The daily tot became codified in 1731

date_1740
In 1740, Admiral Vernon ordered the daily rum ration to be mixed with water. The mixture was dubbed “Grog” after Vernon’s nickname “Old Grogram”

date_1810
The exact rum blend was codified by the Admiralty in 1810

date_1823
In 1823, the daily rum ration was cut in half, and in 1850 it was halved again

date_1970
On 31 July 1970, the daily rum ration was abolished
Note:  Prior to Jamaica's rum, the tot was Brandy.
Beer was always in the mix as well, but volume storage was a problem.
Ahhh.
A gallon a day.  Alcohol was the only analgesic for the aches and pains of the physical labor.  No aspirin yet.
Works better too. NSAIDs? Don't touch the stuff.
Sides the water was usually bad.

date_1655
Rum was first introduced into the Royal Navy shortly after the Invasion of Jamaica in 1655

Tomorrow we can venture into the medical applications of gin and tonic.
Yeah, that shit about killed me 32 years ago causing me to fall out of a moving car window shortly after a woman I was hitting on at a wedding introduced me to my wife as her new friend named Big Smith.   No redeeming qualities in Gin!
The nickname shoulda given you a hint.  Just sayin'…
Been a while since the Warden reminded me if that incident, maybe she forgot it ::)
Not likely if it puts you in a bad light.

Batting over 300.  Considered pretty good in some circles.
Don't they have any engineering students in them colleges out there?  Heck, get a couple of interns, pay them less, they are probably more energetic than most, and you can hire them after if you like them, say good-bye without complications if you don't.

Warden is home with my lemonade now I can have my rum tot.
I'll need the proper ingredients and ratios. I've got all the makings and plan to make one too.

I just pour some rum over ice and fill with lemonade, no formula.

You can put it all in a blender and make it a daiquiri

Problem I have right now is that my ice maker isn't working and I have no idea where the ice trays are.

Now that is an issue.  My ice maker is broke too so been buying bagged ice for a month until I manage to find someone around here to fix it.

That's exactly what I've been doing. Heading out to buy ice shortly.

Nice! It's pouring rain here and I just came in from grilling. Not sure I feel like going back out to buy ice so I may have some rum neat.

Did the grill thing for dinner as well. Chipotle chicken from the market. Love it.

It's flash flooding here. No smoke for me tonight. Still up in the air about the rum.

Sounds like you're getting the rain we had yesterday. Wasn't quite that bad, however.
