Today is Friday, March 25, the 85th day of 2016. There are 281 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On March 25, 1776, Gen. George Washington, commander of the Continental Army, was awarded the first Congressional Gold Medal by the Continental Congress.

On this date:

In 1306, Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scots.

In 1865, during the Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Fort Stedman in Virginia but were forced to withdraw because of counterattacking Union troops.

In 1911, 146 people, mostly young female immigrants, were killed when fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. in New York.

In 1947, a coal mine explosion in Centralia, Illinois, claimed 111 lives.

In 1954, RCA announced it had begun producing color television sets at its plant in Bloomington, Indiana.

In 1965, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led 25,000 people to the Alabama state capitol in Montgomery after a five-day march from Selma to protest the denial of voting rights to blacks. Later that day, civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo, a white Detroit homemaker, was shot and killed by Ku Klux Klansmen.

In 1975, King Faisal (FY’-suhl) of Saudi Arabia was shot to death by a nephew with a history of mental illness. (The nephew was beheaded in June 1975.)

In 1985, “Amadeus” won eight Academy Awards, including best picture, best director for Milos (MEE’-lohsh) Forman and best actor for F. Murray Abraham.

In 1990, 87 people, most of them Honduran and Dominican immigrants, were killed when fire raced through an illegal social club in New York City.

In 1991, “Dances with Wolves” won seven Oscars, including best picture, at the 63rd annual Academy Awards; Kathy Bates won best actress for “Misery” while Jeremy Irons received best actor for “Reversal of Fortune.”

In 1996, an 81-day standoff by the anti-government Freemen began at a ranch near Jordan, Montana.

In 2001, at the 73rd Academy Awards, “Gladiator” won best picture; its star, Russell Crowe, was named best actor; Julia Roberts received the best actress Oscar for “Erin Brockovich”; Steven Soderbergh won best director for “Traffic.”

Ten years ago: In Los Angeles, half a million people marched to protest federal legislation to make illegal immigration a felony and build more walls along the border. In Seattle, Aaron Kyle Huff opened fire in a house full of ravers, killing six of them before killing himself. Kimmie Meissner won the ladies’ World Figure Skating Championships title in Calgary, Alberta. Country music star Buck Owens died in Bakersfield, California, at age 76. Movie director Richard Fleischer died in Woodland Hills, California, at age 89.

Five years ago: Canadian opposition parties brought down the Conservative government in a no-confidence vote, triggering an election that gave Prime Minister Stephen Harper a clear Conservative majority in Parliament. Olga Ulyanova, 89, a chemist and niece of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin who’d written several books praising her uncle and family, died in Moscow.

One year ago: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani thanked the U.S. Congress for billions of American tax dollars and vowed his war-wracked country would be self-reliant within the decade. British singer Zayn Malik shocked his fans by announcing he was quitting the chart-topping band One Direction.

Bull is the best of the SL line IMHO and there are none in the tubs.  $50/box is good, rarely see them on special anymore.

After 4 months in the humidor, I decided to try a La Gloria Gilded Age Toro.  After removing the cellophane it's smell brought back memories my grandfather.  When ever he would open a new package of twisted chewing tobacco, he would smell it like the pre-light of a cigar and also allow me to smell it too.  Strange how I never thought about him doing that for over 50 years.  I would say it had a draw just a little tighter than medium.  First, I personally (not the cigar), can not pick out allot of subtle flavors. To me the first third had a mild to medium core tobacco flavor with a hint of sweetness.  Razor sharp burn, and the ash stayed on at a little over 2 inchs as I let it go out.  I didn't realize it, but this is a long smoking cigar.  It took me around 1 hour and 10 minutes and I didn't quite make it to the end of the first third.  I feel guilty that I didn't finish it, but 1 hour and 10 to 15 minutes and I'm about smoked out.  I wish I could have smoked more of it to see if there were any changes.  On a scale of 1(bad) - 5(buy a box), I'd give this a 3 1/2 (if some one gave me this cigar, I would not turn it down).  I may try and smoke the rest of it later today, but who knows how that will turn out..?  What I got out of this is, "I would like to try a different La Gloria and see how that goes.

Morning Gilded Age Dad.

FYI, I like a lot of LGC cigars but that one is not at the top of my list.  R Serie and the N along with the Wavell are good smokes.

A little trivia from the good ol' days, the first true premium cigar I ever smoked was a Miami Rolled LGC that I bought at the old Miami (Little Havana)  Shop when they actually produced cigars there.  I believe it was a Maduro CHARLEMAGNE double corona.  Also Had my first Cuban Sandwich right around the corner after visiting a few cigar shops.  CHARLEMAGNE Is still a good smoke.

Before then it was grocery store cigars.

My 1st grade granddaughter was sent to the principal's office.  On St. Patrick's Day, the class was asked to wright a short essay on, "If I got the leprechaun's pot of gold, what would you do with it..?" She said, "She would give part of it to hungry people, part of it to poor people, and the rest to charity."  The principal took her to his office and made copies of her essay, and they went to all the other classes and gave one to the teachers. My granddaughter said, "I don't understand, I was the only one in the whole school that did say, I would keep the money for myself or buy things for myself...?"

More from the "Let's get offended" file.  NBA threatens to move the All-Star game from NC because:
"The North Carolina general assembly made big news Wednesday night when it called a special session to pass a new state-wide law that forces all people to use the bathroom assigned to their biological sex. The bill, quickly signed into law by Republican governor Pat McCrory, overturns municipal bill that brings strong anti-discrimination legislation, including the right to choose the bathroom of one's preferred gender, to Charlotte.

They were just worried about having to install regulation peach baskets, since NC is under the impression it's the 1890s again.

Got me 15 pounds of nice live crawfish to boil this afternoon and some no-fruits-here-beer to drink while cooking
Those better be non-GMO, humanely raised and harvested, gender-nonspecific crawfish.  And don't call them mudbugs, as that is offensive.

Quick rant:

I know I shouldn't be judging, especially on Good Friday...

When a person is a dick, he'll always be a dick! Ran into a guy at the conference that I used to work with 25 years ago. I couldn't stand him back in those days but I thought maybe he was just immature and he'd changed. So I decided to approach him while he was bending the lecturer's ear after the last session. I must have heard him say at least a dozen times, "how shall I put it?..." I asked if his name was Larry and he replied,  yes. But supposedly he had no recollection of ever having worked with me nor at the company that I mentioned. He is so full of shit. Whatever! I instantly regretted my decision.
