Just read an article about it this morning, actually. It's held up in the house for two reasons - 1, they claim to have bigger things to do, though, I don't generally see them doing much. 2, there's a disagreement about which time to keep, daylight or standard. Tourist places would prefer daylight, since it gives an extra hour of sunlight at the end of the day, rural places prefer standard, since it gives farmers an extra hour in the morning. So I don't predict it changing any time soon.

There is the same amount of daylight in the day.  Farmers don't have to punch a clock like most folks do, so office workers and tourists need an extra hour in the evening.

Today is Monday, July 25, the 206th day of 2022.
There are 159 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On July 25, 1972, the notorious Tuskegee syphilis experiment came to light as The Associated Press reported that for the previous four decades, the U.S. Public Health Service, in conjunction with the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, had been allowing poor, rural Black male patients with syphilis to go without treatment, even allowing them to die, as a way of studying the disease.

On this date:

In 1866, Ulysses S. Grant was named General of the Army of the United States, the first officer to hold the rank.

In 1943, Benito Mussolini was dismissed as premier of Italy by King Victor Emmanuel III, and placed under arrest. (However, Mussolini was later rescued by the Nazis, and re-asserted his authority.)

In 1946, the United States detonated an atomic bomb near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific in the first underwater test of the device.

In 1956, the Italian liner SS Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish passenger ship Stockholm off the New England coast late at night and began sinking; 51 people — 46 from the Andrea Doria, five from the Stockholm — were killed. (The Andrea Doria capsized and sank the following morning.)

In 1960, a Woolworth’s store in Greensboro, North Carolina, that had been the scene of a sit-in protest against its whites-only lunch counter dropped its segregation policy.

In 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the first “test tube baby,” was born in Oldham, England; she’d been conceived through the technique of in-vitro fertilization.

In 1994, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (YIT’-sahk rah-BEEN’) and Jordan’s King Hussein (hoo-SAYN’) signed a declaration at the White House ending their countries’ 46-year-old formal state of war.

In 2000, a New York-bound Air France Concorde crashed outside Paris shortly after takeoff, killing all 109 people on board and four people on the ground; it was the first-ever crash of the supersonic jet.

In 2010, the online whistleblower Wikileaks posted some 90,000 leaked U.S. military records that amounted to a blow-by-blow account of the Afghanistan war, including unreported incidents of Afghan civilian killings as well as covert operations against Taliban figures.

In 2016, on the opening night of the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia, Bernie Sanders robustly embraced his former rival Hillary Clinton as a champion for the same economic causes that enlivened his supporters, signaling it was time for them to rally behind her in the campaign against Republican Donald Trump.

In 2019, President Donald Trump had a second phone call with the new Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he solicited Zelenskyy’s help in gathering potentially damaging information about former Vice President Joe Biden; that night, a staff member at the White House Office of Management and Budget signed a document that officially put military aid for Ukraine on hold.

In 2020, federal agents fired tear gas to break up rowdy protests in Portland, Oregon, that continued into the early morning, demonstrations had been taking place in Portland every night for two months in the aftermath of the Minneapolis death of George Floyd.

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama embraced some degree of control on the sale of weapons but also told the National Urban League in New Orleans he would seek a national consensus on combating violence. NBC announced it had topped the $1 billion mark in advertising sales for the upcoming Olympic Games in London, topping the $850 million in ad sales for the Beijing games in 2008.

Five years ago: A bitterly-divided Senate voted to move forward with Republican legislation to repeal and replace “Obamacare.” Sen. John McCain, returning to the Capitol for the first time since he was diagnosed with brain cancer, cast a decisive “yes” vote. (Three days later, McCain joined with two other Republican senators and Democrats in defeating the repeal effort.) House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was critically wounded in a shooting at a baseball practice on June 14, was released from a Washington hospital.

One year ago: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named a second Republican critic of Donald Trump, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, to a special committee investigating the Capitol riot; he joined Rep. Liz Cheney as the committee’s two Republicans, both selected by Democrats. Golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, who’d won the past two U.S. Open golf tournaments, dropped out of the Tokyo Games after testing positive for COVID-19.

The postal saga has another chapter. Guy comes by in a postal truck, but not wearing a postman uniform. I see him out there, so I'm waiting by the door. He brings a package my sister sent (through USPS, so he's not delivering for Amazon or anything). I mention the cigars and the slip I got Saturday, he says I have to take that to the PO. I told him I tossed it because it said they'd try to redeliver it. He said then maybe they will on the route. I said, aren't you the route? He said no, he's just delivering packages first, not the regular mail. Even though what I'm missing is a package. My confidence in getting these cigars has dropped slightly.

I'm already in a bad mood based on things going on around here having to do with the incompetency of stupid people.

Thankfully, none of that nonsense is job search related.

TD - 300 Manos from yesterday was from an earlier order. The Gabagools are the ones that didn't get delivered on Saturday. Also waiting on the Cupidos and Room 101 Teufel Hunds from the Page.
I'll be curious to hear your take on the Teufel Hunds.  Figured they are just a relabel of CI's Ichiban's, which weren't terrible but didn't bring a lot to the experience.
That was my take on the TH 101 Connecticut. Good for free but won't be buying any
For $2 per, I'm willing to take a risk. Time will tell.

Morning, BoilerRick.

That sucks. Hopefully you're talking about remodelers and not family.

Same guy is back now, this time delivering mail. We shall see...

Side note, how is it efficient for them to make a run for packages, then another run for mail? Perhaps this is something they could address when trying to figure out how to save a couple of dollars?

I'm talking about some bitch at the mall that never paid my daughter for the one day she worked there. Something about a policy they have that the first day is a trial. I explained that slavery was abolished a while back. I also asked to see where is it written in the employee manual. She was unable to find it. The district manager happened to be there at the time and promised to write her a check and send it this week. I asked what the issue was and she told me that they didn't have enough hours to give her. I asked why the help wanted sign was still up and she told me she forgot to take it down. Then I asked why my daughter was told not to come in for the rest of the days she was already scheduled and she replied that they are a new store and aren't making any money yet. Then she also told me that my daughter asked for too many days off (which is absolute bullshit) but which is it?!?

But it's about family too. I specifically asked my mother-in-law not to go to the basement and that's where I found her doing dishes when I returned from the mall incident. There are too many stairs to navigate and an 87 year old shouldn't be down there. But I guess I know where my wife gets her stubbornness from...

The mall thing is definitely shady. Sucks she went through that, but I guess it was a good life lesson about trusting people. Hopefully the check is actually in the mail.

As for your MIL, good luck getting anyone over 70 to listen to anything you have to say. It's the same reason my grandma kept falling in her late 70s/early 80s, and why my grandpa occasionally does when he thinks he should be working in the yard at 88.

Well, mail has come, no cigars. He says I'll have to go to the post office with my ID and they'll give it to me. Somehow, I doubt it will be that easy.

On the plus side, he did bring the reimbursement check from our city's school district, since we send our kids out of the city. The universe giveth and the universe taketh away, I guess. :D

Luckily, we don't have one. We used to at the constellation school they're at, but they did away with it several years ago. The reimbursement is just supposed to cover the cost of transporting them elsewhere all year. Of course, it doesn't come close to the amount that would cover it, but it's still nice to get something.

Stupid people. We had a system that worked. Concealed Carry permit holders have to be fingerprinted and background-checked every five years. If you had the card, you got your weapon. But  some asshole commits a mass-murder, and that's no good anymore. Now we just have to wait for 10 days. And that makes us "safer." Supposedly, in that time, local law enforcement is going to run a background check. But they don't. I know they don't. I know the local LEOs, and they know me. It's just stupidity. Rampage killers don't cool down over ten days. They plan and they psych themselves up for ten days.

But...whatever. I don't care. I've been waiting for years to find this rifle. Ten more days doesn't bother me. Nobody's safer, but they feel like government did something, and that makes them all warm and moist.

Well, my Colt SP-1 rifle turns out to be an even better deal than I thought. It's in remarkable condition for a 44-year-old rifle.

Now I just have to wait for all the legal bullshit to settle.

Moistness is key.

So, after I got done filling all the paperwork out at Brad's Guns, and talking with the crowd of customers and employees that gathered to admire this classic rifle (It's from 1978, it belonged to the White Mountain Apache Tribal Police, no it doesn't have a forward-assist, no these rifles didn't get soldiers killed in Vietnam, that was because the government bought bad ammo, no I won't sell it to you right now for $3k, oh that's a lovely picture of your build, and yours, and yours, and yours, and that's a funny story about the gun store that had a liquor license, yes I think the BATFE should be a convenience store not a government agency, yadda, yadda, yadda) I decided to have dinner at Al Lago, across the street from the gun store.

Al Lago is a bit overpriced, but it's good food. The wife was with her kin at Kanaskat-Palmer state park, and she's pissy at me anyway right now. So I treated myself. Had a gorgeous ribeye with amazing mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables, with an excellent glass of local Malbec. Creme Brulee and coffee for dessert.

Anyway, a family began assembling at the table to my left. He was a big guy, with a man-bun, in a t-shirt and shorts. Mother or MIL with him. One precocious daughter. Then the wife arrived, with the other daughter and son in tow. And my first thought was, "dear God. She's straight out of Beetlejuice." I kid you not, she'd done her eye makeup like Michael Keaton. And the hilarious thing was, she was wearing a Beetlejuice t-shirt, with the sleeves ripped off.

I am not judging. I'm sure they are lovely people, and their kids were obviously very smart and very polite. I guess I just find it odd to encounter a family at a pricy restaurant in which mama aspired to be a grotesque from a bizarre movie.

Sounds like a fine evening.

Though, full disclosure, my youngest does the same weird shit with her makeup. Whatever, she wants to try out some crazy ass looking makeup, more power to her. And more power to her wanting to go out of the house looking like that. Lol

Hey, I'm completely in favor of people expressing themselves. Whatever turns your crank. Just struck me odd.

It wouldn't have struck me odd if I'd been at Costco or Taco Time. But at Al Lago, it was odd.

Il Siciliano, Al Lago, what's it gonna be tomorrow night? You better make up with the Mrs. because this is costing you a fortune.
