Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Missed the damn garbage men again. I should have put it out last evening but I wasn't out again after 7. Most of my neighbors put it out by 3:pm but we're not supposed to. Actually, they're supposed to come pick up full containers from your alley but it rarely happens anymore.

If I missed the garbage men for a week, I'd be in a hell of a situation with the cans. Both of mine get pretty full in a week, especially with grass cutting season upon us.

They pick up grass clippings on a different day and recyclables on yet another. Most importantly "regular" trash twice a week. So they're basically here every day.

Ok, so your forgetfulness is forgiven, because I can't imagine trying to keep track of all that. Sheesh.

Today is Tuesday, May 11, the 131st day of 2021.
There are 234 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On May 11, 1935, the Rural Electrification Administration was created as one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs.

On this date:

In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state of the Union.

In 1943, during World War II, U.S. forces landed on the Aleutian island of Attu, which was held by the Japanese; the Americans took the island 19 days later.

In 1946, the first CARE packages, sent by a consortium of American charities to provide relief to the hungry of postwar Europe, arrived at Le Havre, France.

In 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company of Akron, Ohio, announced the development of a tubeless tire.

In 1953, a tornado devastated Waco, Texas, claiming 114 lives.

In 1960, Israeli agents captured Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In 1973, the espionage trial of Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo in the “Pentagon Papers” case came to an end as Judge William M. Byrne dismissed all charges, citing government misconduct.

In 1981, legendary reggae artist Bob Marley died in a Miami hospital at age 36.

In 1996, an Atlanta-bound ValuJet DC-9 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Miami and crashed into the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 people on board.

In 1997, IBM’s “Deep Blue” computer demolished an overwhelmed Garry Kasparov, winning the six-game chess re-match between man and machine in New York.

In 1998, India set off three underground atomic blasts, its first nuclear tests in 24 years. A French mint produced the first coins of Europe’s single currency, the euro.

In 2010, Conservative leader David Cameron, at age 43, became Britain’s youngest prime minister in almost 200 years after Gordon Brown stepped down and ended 13 years of Labour government.

Ten years ago: Former hedge fund titan Raj Rajaratnam was convicted by a federal jury in New York in an insider-trading case of five counts of conspiracy and nine of securities fraud. (Rajaratnam was sentenced to 11 years in prison.)

Five years ago: A white former South Carolina police officer already facing a state murder charge in the shooting death of Black motorist Walter Scott was indicted on federal charges including depriving the victim of his civil rights. (Michael Slager pleaded guilty to violating Scott’s civil rights and was sentenced to 20 years in prison; prosecutors agreed to drop the state murder charge.) CBS News veteran Morley Safer, a “60 Minutes” correspondent for all but two of the newsmagazine’s 48-year history, announced his retirement (Safer died eight days later at age 84).

One year ago: After two cases of COVID-19 were confirmed among staffers, a memo to White House staff directed “everyone who enters the West Wing to wear a mask or facial covering”; a maskless President Donald Trump addressed a Rose Garden audience filled with mask-wearing administration officials. Twitter announced that it would add a warning label to tweets containing disputed or misleading information about the coronavirus. Georgia’s attorney general appointed a Black district attorney from the Atlanta area to take over the case of a white father and son charged with killing a Black man, Ahmaud Arbery, near the Georgia port city of Brunswick. Jerry Stiller, best known for his role as George Costanza’s father in “Seinfeld” and earlier as part of a comedy duo with wife Anne Meara, died at 92.

Having seen the Wings of the City sculptures, I'm not sure what the councilman means by "extreme nudity."  The genitalia is not particularly defined.  On the other hand, I'm wondering exactly what values and ideals of Greenville - or any city - the sculptures are supposed to represent.

Yeah, sorry, but you're ignoring history, as "northern liberals" are so given to doing.  "Oh my god there's a penis on that art!" was a universal sentiment well into the 20th century.  Whether it was an appropriate sentiment or not can be debated or joked about.  But it doesn't originate in the south.  That it lingers in the south isn't surprising, given how agrarian the south is and was.  But it lingers in the north as well as the south, if you happen to be enlightened enough to step out of your echo chamber once in a while.

So the northern liberal surprise ("We're shocked.  SHOCKED I say!") that other parts of the country don't keep up with their enlightenment is not just disingenuous, but retarded.  Cotton Mather and Jonathan Edwards were northerners, not southerners.   The original hotbed of Protestant Fundamentalist Fervor in the Americas was Massachusetts, not South Carolina.

And no, I'm not southern born.  I was born in San Jose, California.  But I endeavor to be, y'know, rational about things.  ;-)

Having seen the Wings of the City sculptures, I'm not sure what the councilman means by "extreme nudity."  The genitalia is not particularly defined.  On the other hand, I'm wondering exactly what values and ideals of Greenville - or any city - the sculptures are supposed to represent.
I'm only guessing that a passing buttocks or a tit or two would be OK, but genitals, however abstract are not to be seen!
See, and you seem surprised by this, but isn't it interesting that here in Bluest of Blue Washington there are no bottomless nude clubs (and damned few titty bars), but fundamentalist Georgia has lots of full nude bars, and Southern Baptist Dallas has arguably the finest titty bars in the country? We won't get into the history of art nor the whole debate in the 70's around Larry Flynt's magazine "showing pink."  Suffice to say that clearly there are differences of opinion on what constitutes pornography that cut across the Mason-Dixon line, and just about every other line.

How dare they be putting up statues of nekkid people in my city!

Before even clicking on this article, I was thinking, I wonder how far south this city will be. I wasn't disappointed.

"Because they're sculptures, they're considered art." Priceless.
Ah, there it is.  The Genetic Fallacy masquerading as "enlightenment."  You must have been top of your class in college.
Is a stereotype still a stereotype when it's proved to be true?
Stereotypes are what they are, regardless how anyone feels about them.  I'm more interested in this concept of "proved to be true."  I've had to check in on the Scientific Method several times this morning and apparently our scientists are still unable to make it prove anything true.  You got some scientists out there in Ohio say otherwise?

Yeah, sorry, but "ohmygod there's a penis on that art!" has southern "morality" written all over it. While genetic fallacy was clearly behind my initial reaction, I feel that the article itself proved what I expected it to. Is a stereotype still a stereotype when it's proved to be true?

But I endeavor to be, y'know, rational about things.  ;-)
Not sure you meant to make my point for me, but here we are. Of course it can be found in lots of places, my point simply being it that is is far likelier to be a southern ideology these days. Since I was relatively certain the article was not about statues that were put up 30 years ago (or 200+ years ago, as your odd references to two preachers would indicate), it was an easy (and correct) assumption that this originated in the south. Some might even call that a rational assumption, if one were to wax poetic about such things.

No scientists needed to put even the most basic definition of the scientific method through its paces:

1 - Make an observation (this article seems to be about people complaining about genitals on art)
2 - Create a hypothesis (I bet this is from the south)
3 - Test the hypothesis (I'll click on the article and read it)
4 - Draw conclusions (yep, it was from the south)

That article about CA uses the phrase "startlingly explicit nudes". That seems even more intense than the "extremely nude" from earlier.
