I made it to Friday. Unfortunately, thanks to a young driver last night, part of my fence did not.

The white car on the left is his. The Soul on the right is mine. In that last one, that's part of my fence that got pushed a couple of feet to the right onto my car.

That sucks. Was he drunk? Or was it the snow?

Neither. Young kid, turned the corner in front of my house, something slid off his dash and got the wheel stuck and he panicked and hit the gas instead of the brake. Roads were fine, so it wasn't weather related.

I assumed he was your next door neighbor and he judged the driveway incorrectly. In reality, he had absolutely no business being there. THROW THE BOOK AT HIM!

Nah, we live on a corner, so the house faces south while the driveway and garage face west. He came around that corner turning right and just kinda kept right on turning. Though, apparently, he was coming from his sister's house, and she only lives a couple houses down the street. Never saw her before, not exactly the way I was hoping to meet a neighbor.
A few years ago, we removed a huge ginko tree that sat right in front of that fence. If he'd done this before we took it down, I imagine the night would've ended very differently for him. Though, the fence would've been safe.

Today is Friday, Feb. 5, the 36th day of 2021.
There are 329 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On Feb. 5, 2020, the Senate voted to acquit President Donald Trump, bringing to a close the third presidential trial in American history, though a majority of senators expressed unease with Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine that resulted in the two articles of impeachment. Just one Republican, Mitt Romney of Utah, broke with the GOP and voted to convict.
On this date:
In 1631, the founder of Rhode Island, Roger Williams, and his wife, Mary, arrived in Boston from England.
In 1811, George, the Prince of Wales, was named Prince Regent due to the mental illness of his father, Britain’s King George III.
In 1917, Mexico’s present constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Santiago de Queretaro. The U.S. Congress passed, over President Woodrow Wilson’s veto, an act severely curtailing Asian immigration.
In 1918, during World War I, the Cunard liner SS Tuscania, which was transporting about 2,000 American troops to Europe, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Irish Sea with the loss of more than 200 people.
In 1922, the first edition of Reader’s Digest was published.
In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed increasing the number of U.S. Supreme Court justices; the proposal, which failed in Congress, drew accusations that Roosevelt was attempting to “pack” the nation’s highest court.
In 1971, Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell stepped onto the surface of the moon in the first of two lunar excursions.
In 1983, former Nazi Gestapo official Klaus Barbie, expelled from Bolivia, was brought to Lyon (lee-OHN’), France, to stand trial. (He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison — he died in 1991.)
In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act, granting workers up to 12 weeks unpaid leave for family emergencies.
In 1994, white separatist Byron De La Beckwith was convicted in Jackson, Mississippi, of murdering civil rights leader Medgar Evers in 1963, and was immediately sentenced to life in prison. (Beckwith died Jan. 21, 2001 at age 80.)
In 2001, four disciples of Osama bin Laden went on trial in New York in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa. (The four were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.)
In 2008, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a guru to the Beatles who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, died at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop; he was believed to be about 90.
-
Ten years ago: The leadership of Egypt’s ruling party stepped down as the military figures spearheading the transition tried to placate protesters without giving them the one resignation they were demanding, that of President Hosni Mubarak. Marshall Faulk and Deion Sanders led a class of seven voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; joining them were Shannon Sharpe, Richard Dent, Ed Sabol, Les Richter and Chris Hanburger.
Five years ago: President Barack Obama used a new jobs report to continue his victory lap on the economy, declaring the U.S. had “the strongest, most durable economy in the world.” (The president spoke shortly after the Labor Department announced that U.S. employers added 151,000 jobs in January, pushing the unemployment rate to 4.9 percent from 5 percent.)
One year ago: With white sheets covering them, people infected with the new coronavirus were led off of a Japanese cruise ship in the port city of Yokohama, while the rest of the 3,700 people on board faced a two-week quarantine in their cabins. Actor Kirk Douglas, star of “Spartacus” and dozens of other films, died at the age of 103.

True, depending on whether he wants to deal with increased insurance or avoid with out of pocket. You can replace the fencing with some of that nice composite material, installed of course.

It will be if the driver isn't insured. Then we have to try to figure out if the vehicle is insured. If it's not, then it gets messy.

If he wasn't on the policy at the time of the accident, they won't cover him. Adding him on afterwards won't do me any good. We'll see what their underwriting department says when they do their research.

I agree with the latter. It's the same if I lend my car to my brother-in-law and he has an accident. The more important part is that the car is insured. Then again, you're in the biz so I'm sure you'll know more about this.

Related to my previous post. Does that mean that legally you can only let people drive if they're on your policy?
Hypothetically, if I'm drunk and I hand over the keys to a designated driver, do I have to add him to my policy first?

It also varies state to state. NJ has no fault, so basically, your insurance pays out. Now in SC, we have ambulance chasers ads all over TV, especially around evening news time.

It sounds like maybe the girl who owned the car had insurance, and the guy was supposedly on his mother's policy. He provided his mother's policy info to the cop, and Geico says he wasn't on it. So in their investigation, they'll find out if the car is insured elsewhere, and if it is, then I'd have to go through that company.

No, in most circumstances, a person is covered as long as your car is. But she said she had SR-22 insurance, which is something you get when you've been busted for something before, in her case, driving without insurance. So we'll have to see if she had it on the car, or only on herself, assuming she actually had it at all. If she had it on the car, hopefully we're fine, but since I don't know who she's insured through, I can't find out just yet. Would've been nice to have had someone with their own damn insurance plow through my fence, would've made it much easier to deal with.

Ultimately, you have a name, address, police report and pictures. She'll pay for it one way or the other. Just a degree of extra work for you.

Indeed. Just the annoyance of potentially having to go after her for it, instead of the insurance company just cutting a check and being done with it.
