Today is Tuesday, Aug. 1, the 213th day of 2017. There are 152 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On August 1, 1957, the United States and Canada announced they had agreed to create the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).
On this date:
In 1714, Britain's Queen Anne died at age 49; she was succeeded by George I.
In 1876, Colorado was admitted as the 38th state.
In 1907, the U.S. Army Signal Corps established an aeronautical division, the forerunner of the U.S. Air Force.
In 1913, the Joyce Kilmer poem "Trees" was first published in "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse."
In 1936, the Olympics opened in Berlin with a ceremony presided over by Adolf Hitler.
In 1944, an uprising broke out in Warsaw, Poland, against Nazi occupation; the revolt lasted two months before collapsing.
In 1947, Mickey Spillane's first novel, "I, the Jury," featuring the debut of private eye Mike Hammer, was published.
In 1966, Charles Joseph Whitman, 25, went on an armed rampage at the University of Texas in Austin that killed 14 people, most of whom were shot by Whitman while he was perched in the clock tower of the main campus building. (Whitman, who had also slain his wife and mother hours earlier, was finally gunned down by police.)
In 1975, a 35-nation summit in Finland concluded with the signing of a declaration known as the Helsinki Accords dealing with European security, human rights and East-West contacts.
In 1977, former U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, working as a traffic reporter for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, was killed with his cameraman, George Spears, when their helicopter ran out of fuel and crashed; Powers was 47.
In 1981, the rock music video channel MTV made its debut.
In 1994, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley confirmed they'd been secretly married 11 weeks earlier. (Presley filed for divorce from Jackson in Jan. 1996, citing irreconcilable differences.)

Ten years ago: The eight-lane Interstate 35W bridge, a major Minneapolis artery, collapsed into the Mississippi River during evening rush hour, killing 13 people.
Five years ago: President Barack Obama made his rival's personal millions a front-and-center issue in the race for the White House, telling a swing-state audience in Ohio that Mitt Romney "is asking you to pay more so that people like him can get a big tax cut." Four teams from China, South Korea and Indonesia were kicked out of the women's badminton doubles at the London Olympics for trying to lose on purpose in order to earn an easier matchup in the knockout round. Host country Britain picked up its first two gold medals as Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won the final of the women's pair at the rowing regatta and cyclist Bradley Wiggins took the time trial.
One year ago: The United States launched multiple airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Libya, opening a new front against the group at the request of the United Nations-backed Libyan government. President Barack Obama, speaking at the annual convention of the Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta, said the U.S. had made serious strides in improving services for military veterans, but that work remained to overcome shortcomings in the delivery of health care, housing and mental health services. Vice President Joe Biden officiated a gay wedding, a first for the early proponent of same-sex marriage as he presided over the union of Joe Mahshie and Brian Mosteller, both longtime White House aides, at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington.

Smoke anything notable lately, Dave?
I would say I was pleasantly surprised by Caldwell's All Out Kings. Very disappointed with the line overall, but this one is very nice although overpriced. Prior to that was the Tabernacle (also overpriced) Have a couple of other new ones resting a bit before I try them. Some nice ones to share if we get together in a couple of weeks.

No, not yet. I'm only buying a car if I get into this class I registered for. I was told they'd let me know by last week and I didn't have the time to follow up yesterday. Hope to know soon.

That part does. Though, I might need a bit more explanation why unemployment would pay for it when you're employed.

The Pawleys Island Sandwich is outstanding but everything I have had there was good. Ocasionally they have a fried chicken and vegetables lunch plate special that is killer good.

Time to start thinking about some lunch and the Rustic Table is sounding pretty good.
http://rustictable.com
the SheCrab soup looks nice, as well as the oyster sliders, but a
card carrying Texan do you really want Texas style brisket, made out of state....
I would go after 5pm the Jambalaya, on the dinner menu looks really good.
That doesn't count for much. Gonna have to turn that card in soon anyway.
Turned that in with my office key

Wow. Thought I was hungry before but that took me over the top. Gonna need to find some grub, PRONTO!

Morning Mr. Mayor. Gone car shopping yet?
No, not yet. I'm only buying a car if I get into this class I registered for. I was told they'd let me know by last week and I didn't have the time to follow up yesterday. Hope to know soon.
Sounds like the class is being run by Chase.
I've been accepted to the class. Waiting on unemployment to say they'll pay for it. Make more sense?
That part does. Though, I might need a bit more explanation why unemployment would pay for it when you're employed.
Am I?
Ah. Never mind, unemployment office, nothing to see here.

247 Sports ranking the NFL Fanbases on heartbreak:
1. Cleveland Browns
Imagine a team being ripped out of your city overnight without much of an explanation only to return as an expansion franchise a few short years later and be a shell of its former self? That's what Browns fans are dealing with and have gone almost 20 years now without hope or a franchise quarterback to right the ship.
2. Los Angeles Chargers
This one is actually more for the fans that were left behind in San Diego. Divorces are hard on a family and it is unfortunate that the Chargers are no longer in the place they used to call home, but what makes it even more tough to swallow is that they are in a market where not many people will care for them. Losing your team shoots you towards the top of this list.
3. New York Jets
The Jets do not have a whole lot going for them outside of Joe Namath's famous guarantee way back when. And they certainly have a bleak future right now. Their fans are as passionate as many, but right now there is nothing to hang their hats on or be excited about.
4. Detroit Lions
The Lions have a legitimate case for the No. 1 spot on this list if not for making the playoffs three times in the last six seasons. There's the Curse of Bobby Layne, not winning a playoff game since 1991 and seeing Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson walk away in the primes of their careers.
5. Buffalo Bills
The Bills have not been to the playoffs since 1999 and are buried in a division where the New England Patriots make it impossible to crawl to the top of the mountain. Oh, and the team lost four-straight Super Bowl appearances. Ouch.

oh, frabjoulus day," Due to tonight's Cold Play concert at MetLife Stadium, all Secaucus customers are advised to check the departure boards for any track departure changes. "
that means that three tracks of trains, F, G & H will all be squeezed onto a single track F, so they can
devote Tracks G & H to MetLife Stadium shuttles.

I have yet to try the Habano Tony is talking about. Have not seen one during my infrequent B&M visits. His site doesn't even mention it, though Halfwheel review says Stogies in Houston carries it. Will have to make a point to stop in during my next visit down there.
