JFK, LaGuardia, Newark airport employees declare strike, walk off in labor dispute

New York’s “summer of hell” now includes airports.

Some 700 airport workers who provide curbside and terminal services for major airlines at all three New York travel hubs went on strike at 9 p.m. Tuesday — potentially snarling flights for United Airlines, American Airlines and JetBlue.

Hundreds of wheelchair attendants, skycaps, baggage handlers, customer service agents, cabin cleaners, terminal cleaners and shuttle drivers walked off their jobs at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airports in a labor dispute with their employer, PrimeFlight Inc, which subcontracts their services to other airlines.

The workers voted earlier in the week to walk off the job over what they allege are unfair labor practices from PrimeFlight Inc.

Even though we're driving in, I should probably take credit for this one, too.

Today is Wednesday, July 12, the 193rd day of 2017. There are 172 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 12, 1967, rioting erupted in Newark, New Jersey, over the police beating of a black taxi driver; 26 people were killed in the five days of violence that followed.

On this date:

In 1543, England's King Henry VIII married his sixth and last wife, Catherine Parr.

In 1817, author, poet and naturalist Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts.

In 1862, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill authorizing the Army Medal of Honor.

In 1909, the House of Representatives joined the Senate in passing the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allowing for a federal income tax, and submitted it to the states. (It was declared ratified in February 1913.)

In 1917, artist Andrew Wyeth was born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

In 1948, the Democratic National Convention, which nominated President Harry S. Truman for a second term of office, opened in Philadelphia.

In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower was flown by helicopter from the White House to a secret mountaintop location as part of a drill involving a mock nuclear attack on Washington.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter defended Supreme Court limits on government payments for poor women's abortions, saying, "There are many things in life that are not fair."

In 1984, Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale announced his choice of U.S. Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York to be his running-mate; Ferraro was the first woman to run for vice president on a major-party ticket.

In 1988, Democratic presidential candidate Michael S. Dukakis tapped Sen. Lloyd Bentsen of Texas as his running-mate.

In 1994, President Bill Clinton, visiting Germany, went to the eastern sector of Berlin, the first U.S. president to do so since Harry Truman.

In 2001, Abner Louima (loo-EE'-mah), the Haitian immigrant tortured in a New York City police station, agreed to an $8.7 million settlement with the city and its police union.

Ten years ago: Presidential hopeful Barack Obama drew the loudest cheers of the eight Democratic candidates at an NAACP civil rights forum in Detroit as he assailed the Bush administration's record on race relations. The House of Representatives voted 223-201 to withdraw U.S. troops by spring 2008 despite a veto threat from President George W. Bush. British soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria (of Spice Girls fame), arrived in Los Angeles to begin their new lives in the United States.

Five years ago: Vice President Joe Biden rallied support for President Barack Obama at the NAACP's convention in Houston, declaring that Republican challenger Mitt Romney's election-year agenda would hurt - not help - working families in the black community. A scathing report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh said the late Joe Paterno and other top Penn State officials had buried child sexual abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade earlier to avoid bad publicity.

One year ago: President Barack Obama visited Dallas, where five police officers were killed the previous week by a black man seeking vengeance for police killings; Obama said a week of deeply troubling violence seemed to expose "the deepest fault lines of our democracy," but insisted the nation was not as divided as it seemed. With hugs and handshakes, Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton for president during an appearance in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The American League won its fourth consecutive All-Star Game, beating the NL 4-2 at Petco Park in San Diego.

Still can't bring myself to buying unbanded.  I need to know what I'm smoking.  Of course I made an exception for the Warped Lirio Rojo (but as it's the only unbanded in a humi with mostly other Warped offerings, I know what it is.  Have no problem sampling items at a lounge, which is how I started with RoMaCraft cigars, but wouldn't buy boxes or items for home storage until they started banding.  Same with Viaje.

there were wrappers from the bundles I bought, but they are long gone. this kind of tasted like an Oliva connie. an Oliva warehouse is right there in Tampa and the JC Newman factory, which I think is a museum now. I couldn't find it the last time I was there but I may try again next visit.

One of the largest icebergs ever recorded broke off from an ice shelf in Antarctica, British scientists announced Wednesday.

The 1 trillion ton iceberg, with twice of the volume of Lake Erie, broke off from the Larsen C ice shelf between Monday and Wednesday, according to Project MIDAS, which has been monitoring the shelf. At 2,200 square miles, the chunk of floating ice is nearly the size of Delaware.

came up to me and said, "Rains going to start around 7pm!"  not exactly "what's the frequency Kenneth?"

somewhat more confused, and said, "Better have an umbrella!".   Only in New York City

I'll alert the media.... while walking to Train last night, an older gentleman
came up to me and said, "Rains going to start around 7pm!"  not exactly "what's the frequency Kenneth?"
but he seemed a little spacey to me.  So i just looked at him and said: " I'll alert the media!"  he looked at me
somewhat more confused, and said, "Better have an umbrella!".   Only in New York City
Only surprise was he didn't try to sell you an umbrella.

Present and accounted for. Morning, Tony.
Paycheck in the bank with funds available.

Yippee! My May pay is in the account and available to me!
Huzzah!
And if all goes well, my June pay will arrive today.

I guess I can pay my taxes now.
Next, the car!
Maybe you an Golf can get a group deal?
I think Vitaliano is looking for another vehicle too.
Nope scored a 2009 Volkswagan etta sedan, bought a silver "J", and stuck it on the car,
so now it's a Jetta again.  113K miles, half the bells and whistles that the 2006 Lexus IS 250 had,
my 19 year old daughter is now driving that.  put about 200 miles on it so far, have to get used to cornering
with FWD instead of AWD.  it's the 2.5 liter 4, plenty of pep for such a small car.  It was this or a two door
Mitsubishi eclipse, my wife said my days of a 2 door sports coupe, are long over.  One Don Vito concern,
the trunk will store more bodies (or bags of mulch  8) )than the IS 250.

Guess I better cancel my cruise....

Meanwhile, over at the Environmental "Protection" Agency...

Of course. I've known for months that I was going to be taking over two projects from a guy who's going to be moving to a new job. But it was delayed while his boss was in Europe for a month, then there were other priorities, yadda, yadda, yadda. Now I get an email - "This has to be done by the 24th."

Yeah. I'm off Friday for a doctor appt. I have to telecommute next week because they're reconfiguring the office, and I'm off next Thursday and Friday for vacation leave I scheduled months ago. But this now has to be done by the 24th.

Looked at one on Sunday, was not impressed. Took another one out yesterday, that one was much better. Both Souls, like we had. One yesterday was a year newer and rode much better than the first one. Wife is gonna check it out tomorrow, and if she likes it, that'll probably be the one. Of course, this has to be the week the kids start swimming lessons, which is cutting down on our available time to get this shit done.

I think more impressive than the 112 decibel max they recorded for us was the consistent 108 decibels. Any group of people can make a loud noise for a short time for the purposes of trying to be called the loudest. I mean, come on, the Sacramento Kings at #6? Please. Their crowd probably didn't reach 100 decibels all last year combined. I remember a few years back during Lebron 1.0, I was at a playoff game against the Wizards. At one point, the place was so loud, I was screaming after every basket, and I couldn't hear myself.

I would be more impressed if they weren't part of specific attempts to set a record. Those shouldn't count, IMFO. The outdoor ones for college football are impressive, but I imagine the outdoor stadiums for Clemson and LSU hold well over 100k people. You get that many together and whisper, it's gonna create some noise. Lol

Clemson is an intimate 84K.  Undergraduate population is about 17K, Graduate 5K.  Smaller than most people think.

@ GolfinOrNotDave....respectible 13th position for your Cav's, not bad.  We have a little work to do at #3.

Well, truth be told, I call into question all indoor arena's as sound is magnified.  I find it impressive that the top three are all outdoor stadiums.
I would be more impressed if they weren't part of specific attempts to set a record. Those shouldn't count, IMFO. No, not by a long shot, but at least back at the hotel to continue working.  Heading up to Nashua tomorrow and flying home Friday evening.

Got a few things done around here, took care of the front yard this morning, overloaded the trash service, Brisket Sandwich from Schmidt's for lunch, nap and they are finally installing that Fuk'n pool heater now.

Hope to have me a smoke and a mixed drink a little later.

Obviously not that bad here, but still feels like a sauna. No breeze to speak of.  Supposed to get some relief tomorrow afternoon, and I have a customer meeting me up there who also enjoys cigars, so we might get a mini-herf in before this trip is over.

I'm not at that hotel this week.  I was booked there, but they called Monday and said they had to move me to a different property due to a large group staying beyond their original reservation time. This is actually a nicer place, but no free happy hour.

I don't understand it....as you move "up" the hotel chain, it costs more and you get less perks.  Fairfield, Residence in and Townplace are all less expensive have free breakfast and coffee always available in the lobby.  Move up to Courtyard, rooms are smaller, more expensive, you have to buy breakfast and coffee is not free and not available all day.  Marriott hotels rooms are more expensive and breakfast can only be bought in their on site restaurant which is not cheap.  Sheesh.

Yeah, it's a f'ked setup.  I had a negotiated rate at the Residence Inn, which they honored when they moved me to the Hilton Garden Inn, but this place wants $12 for the "breakfast buffet", and no coffee after mid-morning.  Even the cup I grabbed on my way out the door at 6:30 am was lukewarm.  Sheesh on the whole industry!

I pay the same for all of them but the nicer the less you get with Hilton with exception to the bottom end which is Hampton Inn and they are just generally shitty everywhere.

My gripe is the higher end the hotel the worse the tv channel lineup is.

I wrote her back saying that I'm 50 pounds overweight and no longer exercise regularly, do not eat close to my daily recommended fruit and vegetables, don't floss daily (or weekly), and am at greater risk of early death as a single male living alone, all of which will probably do me in first.  Alcohol consumption also is known to increase the risk of various cancers.

Went on to say that I'm 60, falling apart due to all those years of sports and exercise and had to deal with cancer twice.  I'm going to enjoy the time I have left.

Hope she'll talk to me again.

Got a few things done around here, took care of the front yard this morning, overloaded the trash service, Brisket Sandwich from Schmidt's for lunch, nap and they are finally installing that Fuk'n pool heater now.

Hope to have me a smoke and a mixed drink a little later.
Another one with the pool heater in a state where it's been 90-100 for the past two months.....sheesh.... ::)
It is for the Hot Tub and quite nice to see the steam rising off the granny panties in the winter months
Also fixed it for you.
There are, never will be and never have been any Grannie panties in my pool or hot tub!!!!!

Because from November thru April the Fuk'n water is cold and I hate cold!  Rarely ever used the hot tub except in the cooler months.

Welcome to the banter, stranger. I've smoked a number of Payback Connecticuts and agree that they are a decent cigar for a good price.
