Today is Thursday, Jan. 26, the 26th day of 2017. There are 339 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 26, 1942, the first American Expeditionary Force to head to Europe during World War II arrived in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

On this date:

In 1784, in a letter to his daughter Sarah, Benjamin Franklin expressed unhappiness over the choice of the bald eagle as the symbol of America, and stated his own preference: the turkey.

In 1788, the first European settlers in Australia, led by Capt. Arthur Phillip, landed in present-day Sydney.

In 1837, Michigan became the 26th state.

In 1870, Virginia rejoined the Union.

In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Rocky Mountain National Park Act, which created America's 10th national park.

In 1939, during the Spanish Civil War, rebel forces led by Gen. Francisco Franco captured Barcelona.

In 1950, India officially proclaimed itself a republic as Rajendra Prasad took the oath of office as president.

In 1962, the United States launched Ranger 3 to land scientific instruments on the moon - but the probe ended up missing its target by more than 22,000 miles.

In 1979, former Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller died in New York at age 70.

In 1988, Australians celebrated the 200th anniversary of their country as a grand parade of tall ships re-enacted the voyage of the first European settlers. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Phantom of the Opera" opened at Broadway's Majestic Theater.

In 1992, Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton, appearing with his wife, Hillary, on CBS' "60 Minutes," acknowledged "causing pain in my marriage," but said past problems were not relevant to the campaign.

In 1998, President Bill Clinton forcefully denied having an affair with a former White House intern, telling reporters, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."

Ten years ago: The White House said President George W. Bush had authorized U.S. forces in Iraq to take whatever actions were necessary to counter Iranian agents deemed a threat to American troops or the public at large. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told a news conference that a congressional resolution opposing President Bush's troop buildup in Iraq undercut U.S. commanders and emboldened the enemy. Nine black youths were convicted in juvenile court in Long Beach, California, of beating three white women in a racially charged attack on Halloween night. (The nine were later sentenced to probation and house arrest after spending about three months in custody during their trials.)

Five years ago: The Pentagon outlined a plan for slowing the growth of military spending, including cutting the size of the Army and Marine Corps, retiring older planes and trimming war costs. An aggressive Mitt Romney repeatedly challenged Republican rival Newt Gingrich in their final debate before the critical Florida primary. Capping three days of mourning, some 12,000 people - including Penn State students, fans and football stars - paid tribute to the late Joe Paterno in a campus memorial service that exposed a strong undercurrent of anger over his firing. Actor Robert Hegyes, 60, died in Edison, New Jersey.

One year ago: The FBI arrested the leaders of an armed group that was occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon for more than three weeks during a traffic stop that left one man, Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, dead. Pope Francis held talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (hah-SAHN' roh-HAH'-nee) at the Vatican, calling on Tehran to play a key role in stopping the spread of terrorism. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced that its symbolic "Doomsday Clock" remained at three minutes to midnight, citing rising tension between Russia and the U.S., North Korea's recent nuclear test and a lack of aggressive steps to address climate change. Character actor Abe Vigoda, 94, died in Woodland Park, New Jersey.

If you haven't seen it already, but Black Mirror on your list, and of course Stranger Things.  Stranger Things is only one season, and each Black Mirror episode is stand alone (not unlike Twilight Zone).

Well, it has some people from Mythbusters in it, but I wouldn't say it's similar in terms of content. And the wife and I went through Game of Thrones last year in about a month. She does enjoy the binge watching.

Appears the Chinese have to have officially recognized names for non-Chinese.  In the case of our president:

Trump's official Chinese name is Te Lang Pu. That translates to "extraordinary, bright and popular" — the of kind of name he might choose for himself.

But it also can mean "unusual, loud and common," surely the preference for his detractors in the United States.

Of course there are unofficial/slang names, hense the following:

China’s internet users, most of the time, view Trump as a joke. He is nicknamed “Chuanpu,” an abbreviation of “Sichuan Putonghua,” which means “Mandarin with a Sichuan accent.” This is simply because “Trump” and “Chuanpu” sound somewhat similar (the second pronunciation here). The localization has become a reason to support Trump, Weibo users joke.
Li Delin:
In order to promote our Sichuan Putonghua, I support this doubi to be the US president to endorse Chuanpu.
“Doubi,” is online slang that literally means “funny (female genitalia),” but is closer in meaning to “funny douchebag.”
In other cases, Trump is also called 唐床破, or Tang Chuangpo. This is a translation of Donald Trump into a Chinese name with “Tang” (it sounds similar to Don-) as a surname and “Chuangpo” (like “Chuanpu,” it sounds similar to Trump) as a given name. In literal meaning, “Chuangpo” means “bed broken.”

Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson becomes Di Le Sen, which translates to "stem, coerce, dark." President Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway is Kang Wei, meaning "healthy, leather hide." And Ryan Zinke, Trump's nominee for Interior secretary is Jin Ke, which means "ferry crossing, gram or saliva, digest."

I still have some of those from the last "sell off" about 1/2 of the ones I've tried barely draw.  the ones that do are smokeable but not memorable.

So, not so Bueno then...

I've only sampled a couple of the Curivari outside of the BV560 with recommendation from JerseyDave. The Reserva Limitada Cafe (corona) and Cafe Noir (toro). Both were very pleasant and enjoyable.

I'm okay, I'm okay. waiting for the referral office to call about the surgeon. doc said it was healing well but wanted a surgeon look at it decide if it needed cutting/cleaning. doc was sick yesterday just like 80% of the people in my area. quite a bug going around.
I actually just woke up not too long ago. catching up on not sleeping the other night.

The Punch is usually a solid smoke. I haven't had the Monte either, but if it is in any way lacking, It's Friday so you should get to smoke another to make up for it.

Afternoon all! So where are the deals today? Word is the Buena Vistas suck? Too bad. They sure are cheap!

Looked at the "best deals under $1/$2" at one site or another the other day. It suggested things like Phillies Blunt and Titans. Other than people filling em with pot, I have no idea who buys those things! Nasty!

LOL, that was a $2 cigar made for Xicar and they were a really good fishing or mowing smoke but they contracted with a new maker and new ones are more like $3.25 and not all that good.

The la Herincia Core (not the same cigar as the Cubana)is a very good cigar IMHO and they show up on the Jam now and then @ 10/$37.50 .  Worth a try.

In any case, a cut above some of the others I'm the same range, like the GH, I think.
HC you are smoking was a good quality budget cigar before they changed than the LHC is a more expensive cigar but well worth trying when you see them on the Jam.  But by LHC I am referring to the Cuba Core not the Cubana, they are different.

...btw,  Herencia Cubana fired up, with black coffee...
...not Herencia Cubana.... Habano Colorado.  Didn't know what HC stood for ha.
LHC is a different animal all together.

Ha. Ya. I knew I had it wrong. LHC is a little more low rent I think. I did have some LHC oscuro robustos back in the day I quite enjoyed tho...

This HC is quite tasty.
LHC by AJ Fernandez is a solid value smoke, HC,originally marketed by Xikar is an undervalued solid offering, both great as generic smokes or yard gars.

Not that I know of, Swedish Match owns CI and they also own Cricket Lighters along with a lot of other things including Red Man chewing tobacco .  Xikar was started by a couple of guys trying to make a better cigar cutter and they are based in Kansas City.  But the way folks are always buying each other out these days who knows.

Original Xikar HC was owned by Xikar and blended and manufactured by Jesus Fuego.  Then AJF took over.  CI bought the HC and made it a bundle cheapy cheapo smoke.  Xikar brought out the Xikar HC Habano˛ which sounds like the original Xikar HC.  Liked the original Xikar HC.  Have not had the CI brand or the Xikar Series 2.

No recap for me of the day's events? I went straight from the city to my daughter's spelling bee which ended entirely too late. She came in 4th.

Just got the call, first job I interviewed for has been offered to me. Thank god for getting away from fucking performance based scheduling.

Nice! Congrats, Golf. Was this the over or under qualified position?
This was the overqualified one.
Excellent Dave, congrats. Can you please rub off on Tony a bit?
Well, he's talking about doing CF on Saturday now, so I don't if I'll have the chance to rub anything off on him. :D

So, he'll just need to continue rubbing it out himself... just add it to the short list.
LMFAO!
