Today is Thursday, Jan. 19, the 19th day of 2017. There are 346 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 19, 1977, on his last full day in office, President Gerald R. Ford pardoned Iva Toguri D'Aquino, an American convicted of treason for making English-language radio broadcasts from Japan aimed at demoralizing Allied troops in the Pacific Theater during World War II. (Although she was popularly referred to as "Tokyo Rose," D'Aquino never used that name, and was believed to be one of a group of female broadcasters.)

On this date:

In 1807, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

In 1861, Georgia became the fifth state to secede from the Union.

In 1867, the song "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" by Gaston Lyle, Alfred Lee and George Leybourne was first published in London.

In 1915, Germany carried out its first air raid on Britain during World War I as a pair of Zeppelins dropped bombs onto Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn in England.

In 1937, millionaire Howard Hughes set a transcontinental air record by flying his monoplane from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey, in 7 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds.

In 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces captured the British protectorate of North Borneo. A German submarine sank the Canadian liner RMS Lady Hawkins off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, killing 251 people; 71 survived.

In 1955, a presidential news conference was filmed for television and newsreels for the first time, with the permission of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In 1960, the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States of America was signed by both countries in Washington, D.C.

In 1966, Indira Gandhi was chosen to be prime minister of India by the National Congress party.

In 1970, President Richard M. Nixon nominated G. Harrold Carswell to the Supreme Court; however, the nomination was defeated because of controversy over Carswell's past racial views.

In 1987, Guy Hunt became Alabama's first Republican governor since 1874 as he was sworn into office, succeeding George C. Wallace.

In 1992, German government and Jewish officials dedicated a Holocaust memorial at the villa on the outskirts of Berlin where the notorious Wannsee Conference had taken place.

Ten years ago: Former Rep. Bob Ney (nay), R-Ohio, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for his role in a lobbying scandal. (Ney was released from a halfway house in Aug. 2008 after serving nearly a year and a-half of his prison sentence.) Denny Doherty, a member of the 1960s folk-rock group The Mamas & the Papas, died near Toronto at age 66.

Five years ago: Six U.S. Marines were killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan. Texas Gov. Rick Perry abruptly quit the Republican presidential race. One of the world's most popular file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, was shut down as its founder and several company officials were accused of facilitating millions of illegal downloads of films, music and other content. Rupert Murdoch's media empire apologized and agreed to cash payouts to 37 people who'd been harassed and phone-hacked by its tabloid press.

One year ago: Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump received the endorsement of conservative firebrand Sarah Palin, giving the billionaire businessman a potential boost less than two weeks before Iowa's kick-off caucuses. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, in his State of the State address, again pledged to fix the crisis over Flint's lead-contaminated water. Italian movie director Ettore Scola, 84, died in Rome.

Why the hell do the Girl Scouts (or anyone else) have to defend participation in a President's inauguration?  Forget about Obama or Trump or whatever...it is the President and should be given proper respect.  BS PC crap like this is what gives liberals a bad name.

Completely agree with you. I'm excited to test our system of government. But no matter your personal feelings, you have to respect the position. However, I'm not sure Trump feels the same way.

Yep. Thought it might have been better explained if I looked at the day before since it was a Jam, but I decided it wasn't worth the time.

Only 2 offers at the Sister again but I must say one of them is certainly top shelf smokes.
There were 3 originally when I flipped the site. But you're not missing anything. I believe the original door #1 were Padillas.
We have a new offering in door #3 on cigar.com. Not a terrible one either.

True. He can pick a Defense apart, but last game was .vs our backup QB. So, hoping for a better outcome this time. Kansas City had all the stats in their favor before the game last week... Anything can happen!

Nah. Haven't seen or heard of any where we are. I'm up in Glendale, which is pretty high, and downtown. It's good to see it keep coming, but it lengthens my commute as I usually ride my motorcycle downtown when dry and get to bypass some traffic (splitting lanes is legal here in CA). :)

I hear ya. Some folks really are quite reckless. A lot of people zip around cars as if they are stationary objects that won't make unpredictable sudden movements.

If done "correctly," in appropriate speeds of traffic with sufficient reaction time and zone-of-danger avoidance, I'm an advocate.

Morning Tony, Sfish, BYS, presumably Daves and Dean.

Rain again in Los Angeles today. It's starting to feel like the Pacific Northwest!
Flooding affecting you?

Spending a fair amount of time in CA, see plenty of splitting, and it scares the hell out of me to just watch.

I hear ya. Some folks really are quite reckless. A lot of people zip around cars as if they are stationary objects that won't make unpredictable sudden movements.

If done "correctly," in appropriate speeds of traffic with sufficient reaction time and zone-of-danger avoidance, I'm an advocate.
(Well isn't that a lot of fancy words to make it seem like I know what I'm talking about!?)   8)

What has you in CA, Dave?
That's exactly my point, there can be no zone-of-danger avoidance possible.  I never worry about what I'm doing on the bike, but worry a lot about my surroundings.

Agreed. There is never complete zone-of-danger avoidance. My goal is to watch 360, anticipate, and leave reaction time, whether splitting or not. It's never perfect, though. And I do use speed sometimes to get out of clusters of chaos on the freeways. Traffic often tends to congregate in packs, some more chaotic than others due to one or two jackwagons.

You ride? What have you got?

Back from the event. No Bueso ashtrays, but I did win $100. So it's like I won 3 of them.
Or none of them, which is even better

After 8k miles and about 7 months on it I began to wonder if the fjr was the better bike for me (more refined, less buzz, more comfortable on long rides). Good afternoon everyone. Unfortunately, code does not work on sale items. Tried on several different cigars that were on sale. It's too bad, could have offset shipping cost.

Well, shit fire! Only other active coupon I have is for $10 off $125...17RTM10 not that great @8% when you have to meet the limit.
Thanks, BS. Wasn't being critical, just disappointed. And you're right about the other code, and have to still pay ship.

3bean! Nice! Mine is the 2015 A model. I do love the red, th o! I was going to buy a '14, had to delay, and wound up with an FJ-09 two months later. After 8k miles and about 7 months on it I began to wonder if the fjr was the better bike for me (more refined, less buzz, more comfortable on long rides). I bought an 08 fjr for cheap and 3 months later traded my fj09 on the new fjr. Love it!
You're right, the FJR is the best of both worlds. What aftermarket tweaks have you done?

Sport tour bikes. If I had time for two road bikes in my life, I'd have one...either the FJR or the BMW K1300.
I thought you had one or two other Harley's in the garage?

Seems like I read about a project bike somewhere in the mix, too.

I haven't really felt compelled to do any. I have a ram mount for my phone and a factory young screen. I'd probably like to add canyon cages, and maybe a corbin, but my but does ok on the factory seat as far as LA to Vegas so far, so it's not urgent. You?

Gotta say, the fjr is a great bike Raz. I doubt you'd ride the Harley much if you had both. ;)

3b, I do miss the torque of the triple sometimes, but I def don't miss chain adjustment, and the aforementioned complaints. Also, I never was crazy about the look of the fj09. I thought it was hidious when I first saw it. It grew on me, especially after I test rode it. Sometimes i wish i kept the fj09 and the used fjr. I don't have any regrets tho.

Got a '79 Sporty I'm thinking about rebuilding, and I have a deal offered on a '49 Harley WL. But I'm having second thoughts about putting money into either bike. Regardless, those aren't what I mean by "road bikes."

Laam seat, risers, and a bit larger windscreen.  Also horns (couldn't stand that pussy factory horn), ram mounts, a couple other small stuff.  Made it perfect for me.

The Fat Boy was the first to have the solid rims. Made famous when Ahnold rode it in Terminator 2.

The Fat Boy is a stripped-down Softail.  The Fat Bob is a factory bobber based on the Dyna.

I've enjoyed them for a couple of years now. Flavorful but a nice medium.  I found them to be a good contrast to the Namakubi's.  Also historically they were on the cheaper side of Room 101.

I usually went with the 213's  (5 1/2 x 44 corona).  They were released before Room 101 started with the Japanese naming convention for sizes, but do have PC's.  Getting pretty scarce.

Namakubi is definitely fuller.  Don't get it confused with the Namakubi Ecuador however.  A very different cigar (even though supposedly only the wrapper changes).  Not a preferred choice of mine.  The Ecuador has a very earthy/mushroom taste like other Davidoff.

I liked the hell out of my Fat Boy, and I miss it.  I'll get another one at some point. But the missus prefers the Road King, and on the long haul the King is a lot more comfortable. Tradeoffs.

After hearing about these things here for years, I have yet to try a Room 101. Now I've got 50 HN robustos inbound. I should have ordered some Namakubis.  But I spent so much in the past month that I hesitated. That, and it seems senseless to get hooked on a cigar that's going away. I'm still too far from retirement to lay in a lifetime supply.

Still worth it to visit with a few.  It's not like you are looking for the one cigar to smoke the rest of your life, there are plenty of good ones to substitute.
