Today is Wednesday, Jan. 18, the 18th day of 2017. There are 347 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 18, 1967, Albert DeSalvo, who claimed to be the "Boston Strangler," was convicted in Cambridge, Massachusetts, of armed robbery, assault and sex offenses. (Sentenced to life, DeSalvo was killed in prison in 1973.)

On this date:

In 1778, English navigator Captain James Cook reached the present-day Hawaiian Islands, which he named the "Sandwich Islands."

In 1862, the tenth president of the United States, John Tyler, died in Richmond, Virginia, at age 71, shortly before he could take his seat as an elected member of the Confederate Congress.

In 1892, comedian Oliver Hardy was born in Harlem, Georgia.

In 1911, the first landing of an aircraft on a ship took place as pilot Eugene B. Ely brought his Curtiss biplane in for a safe landing on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Harbor.

In 1919, the Paris Peace Conference, held to negotiate peace treaties ending the First World War, opened in Versailles (vehr-SY'), France.

In 1936, Nobel Prize-winning author Rudyard Kipling, 70, died in London.

In 1943, during World War II, Jewish insurgents in the Warsaw Ghetto launched their initial armed resistance against Nazi troops, who eventually succeeded in crushing the rebellion. A U.S. ban on the sale of pre-sliced bread - aimed at reducing bakeries' demand for metal replacement parts - went into effect.

In 1957, a trio of B-52's completed the first non-stop, round-the-world flight by jet planes, landing at March Air Force Base in California after more than 45 hours aloft.

In 1970, David Oman McKay, the ninth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at the age of 96.

In 1988, a China Southwest Airlines Ilyushin 18 crashed while on approach to Chongqing Airport, killing all 108 people on board.

In 1993, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was observed in all 50 states for the first time.

In 1997, former Massachusetts Sen. Paul Tsongas, who rebounded from cancer to briefly become the Democratic front-runner for president in 1992, died in Boston at age 55.

Ten years ago: Truck driver Tyrone Williams was spared the death penalty and sentenced by a federal court in Houston to life in prison for his role in the deaths of 19 immigrants crammed in a sweltering tractor-trailer. A heated controversy at the ABC show "Grey's Anatomy" boiled over as the network rebuked co-star Isaiah Washington for making an anti-gay comment against fellow actor T.R. Knight and Washington issued a lengthy apology (Washington ended up being dropped from the cast).

Five years ago: President Barack Obama rejected the Keystone XL project, a Canadian company's plan to build a 1,700-mile pipeline to carry oil across six U.S. states to Texas refineries. Wikipedia and other websites went dark to protest two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.

One year ago: For the first time in 17 years, civil rights leaders gathered at the South Carolina Statehouse to pay homage to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. without the Confederate flag present; it was one of many rallies throughout the country. Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey, 67, died in New York.

Guess the Sooners are underpaying their players resulting in them having to take on a life of crime.

UPDATE: Oklahoma suspended Parrish Cobb Tuesday night after a Waco newspaper reported that the Sooner freshman cornerback was set to turn himself in on an armed robbery charge.

The OU statement to the media said: “We are aware of the matter and Mr. Cobb is suspended indefinitely from all athletics participation. The University will review the matter further, consistent with its student conduct process.”

Took 4 days to publish this on the local news guess they had to make sure it was not an important Austin commie.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department posed a fair question along with incredible photos of a recent crash: What happens when you try to make your limited production $385,000 Ferrari fly?

Several AFD C-shift crews were called to the crash on Friday night, Jan. 13. A witness told firefighters the car was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour as it passed over the bridge on Red Bud Trail headed toward Westlake Drive.

The Ferrari driver missed his first turn — “no surprise there,” AFD said — and drove straight into the woods, going airborne for about 40 feet. The car then flipped over in the air and landed on its side, down a 40-foot ravine.

The three vehicle occupants had only minor injuries. The driver, however, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Yep, I went home that way yesterday (as I do once or twice a week) because Mopac was parked and it is a treacherous route at 45 mph, in fact they have had so many wrecks there they have roughed up the pavement to help with the skidding.

Some good comments on the article but this was definitely the best-of-the-best!  (It really is only a 2-seat car)

Gotta hand it to Ferrari on the safety engineering. The two chicks he was trying to impress that were strapped into the passenger seat survived. Guess it helped that they had 4 implanted cushioning devices installed.

Here is the link if you would like to read them or see other photos.

Note to Suzuki motorcyclists and other drivers: Watch your speed.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety data obtained by the Chronicle, the two fastest speeding tickets issued in the Lone Star State in 2016 were issued to drivers on the bikes.

The fastest speeding tickets issued in Texas in 2016
Note to Suzuki motorcyclists and other drivers: Watch your speed.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety data obtained by the Chronicle, the two fastest speeding tickets issued in the Lone Star State in 2016 were issued to drivers on the bikes.

Data show the fastest ticket issued was clocked at 209 mph; the second fastest was 167 mph. Both drivers were cited on U.S. 190 in Coryell County.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 1, 2016, troopers issued 9,821 tickets with alleged speeds of 100 mph or faster. That's up from the 6,883 tickets with alleged speeds of 100 mph or faster in 2015.

Looking at the page's opening lines. What exactly has the FDA done to crash the cigar party? I do notice there are apparently brand closeouts and some say prices will spike.  I'm sure I could Google it. Can anyone explain?

Morning, Dave. I'll give it a look over in more detail a little later. It looks like they've listed the brands from the tenski sale the other day, made them fiver deals, and added 10% or so to the price. Looking at my bechmark  LT prices I've been watching, not that I near more. They went down to 25 for ten. Now 15 for 5. Looks like the same has happened for other cigars (laranja ciao for example)?

had to explain all the Clemson magnets and stuff, wife said there is some sort of diplomatic vehicle coming up,
it had flags on both sides - had to explain all the Clemson tigers flags, magnets and stuff), there was a sign that
said driving over 80 MPH is reckless driving.  Remember Montana old speed limits, safe and

In a nutshell:  FDA took control of the Premium Cigar Industry by way of Rule Making and the mess they created basically prohibits the introduction of new cigars without hundreds of thousands of dollars in testing which small producers could never afford.  So the big 3 continue buying up smaller companies to eventually control the market.

Good summary, but with the Caixa's there was obviously an error in pricing and they went up when they caught it around 10:00 but in keeping with your findings the 5 pak price today is still higher per stick than the correct 10 pak price last week.

That'll be pretty consistent across the board. Per stick price for 5-packs will almost always be higher than the same for 10-packs.

Re: 10 pk vs 5 pk prices.

Makes sense for fivers to be more. Some scaled cost of shipping comes into play.  My math was wrong, though. It's more like 20 %. Is it me or do the 10 pacsk usually seem like the best deal, even more so than boxes? I probably wouldn't buy many boxes anyway, as I'm still a relatively new smoker and try a lot of different things.

I generally will go a fiver if it is something new that I'm trying.  Want to do enough smokes in evaluation to make sure I didn't get an outlier (positive or negative).  For cigars I like, good priced 10er works fine.

Just checked out the MoW deal. 12 for 35, not bad.

The FU was looking a little more tempting. $3 and change I think is pretty good for those, no? I haven't had any of them, but I know they are some well regarded cigars. Might have had a decade, but can't be sure.

AB and RP don't get a lot of support around here.  But a lot of people do like them.  A lot to be discovered from a fairly broad flavor offering of the Man O War's.

Did you tell the receptionist there was something wrong with your dick?
No. Do you know something I don't? In all fairness, I haven't seen it in quite some time. But I'm dieting and hopeful.
LMFAO, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express a few years ago and it seems to me that if you can't see it there is a problem with it.

Lol. I don't understand the connection between this comment and the last. Holiday Inn Express? Being able to see one's own dick?

Morning Tony, Bean and Dean.
It's annual physical day here. Wonder if this year, I'll get the finger?
If not let us know and we will make sure there is a virtual  one posted awaiting your return.
I'll need that virtual one, Tex.

Don't try to much to figure things out around this nuthouse - but I guess you have never seen the ad for Holiday Inn Express where staying there can qualify you as a doctor........ it also relates to a joke I posted yesterday.

The joke, based on their ads, is that if you have the good sense to stay at one of their hotels, then you can be an authority on any subject.

Afternoon, all! Looks like some lively banter the last couple hours.  ;)

Just checked out the MoW deal. 12 for 35, not bad.

The FU was looking a little more tempting. $3 and change I think is pretty good for those, no? I haven't had any of them, but I know they are some well regarded cigars. Might have had a decade, but can't be sure.
this also looks good, all the Ave Marias
http://www.cigarsinternational.com/samplers/108982/ave-maria-morning-star-collection/?sourcekey=WS6W (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/samplers/108982/ave-maria-morning-star-collection/?sourcekey=WS6W)
Limit of one, but that is a decent offer so put one in the cart on lay-a-way awaiting a FS code or jam partner.

@ Shank, that is probably worth a hit for you but if you don't know you can put things in your Cart at CI and usually let them sit there until you have FS to go with them from either a code or buying an item off the jam or something else that has a FS included.  Eventually they take them out of your cart though and the time to do so varies.

Already added and saved most of today's deals.  ;D

I could easily drop a couple hundred based on what's in there, limiting it to only what I'd really like to purchase and excluding some of the "extras."  8)

Gotta keep reminding myself how much I have to smoke already, and that I'm probably good for eight months to a year based on current habits. Haha.

They add up quick, I try to always hold an item in the cart that has FS but I am currently out of them.
