Today is Friday, Oct. 6, the 279th day of 2017. There are 86 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Oct. 6, 1927, the era of talking pictures arrived with the opening of "The Jazz Singer" starring Al Jolson, a feature containing both silent and sound-synchronized sequences.

On this date:

In 1683, thirteen families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in Philadelphia to begin Germantown, one of America's oldest settlements.

In 1884, the Naval War College was established in Newport, Rhode Island.

In 1892, British poet laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson died in Surrey, England, at age 83.

In 1939, in a speech to the Reichstag, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler spoke of his plans to reorder the ethnic layout of Europe — a plan which would entail settling the "Jewish problem."

In 1949, U.S.-born Iva Toguri D'Aquino, convicted of treason for being Japanese wartime broadcaster "Tokyo Rose," was sentenced in San Francisco to 10 years in prison (she ended up serving more than six).

In 1958, the nuclear submarine USS Seawolf surfaced after spending 60 days submerged.

In 1960, the historical drama "Spartacus," starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Stanley Kubrick, had its world premiere in New York.

In 1973, war erupted in the Middle East as Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel during the Yom Kippur holiday. (Israel, initially caught off guard, managed to push back the Arab forces before a cease-fire finally took hold in the nearly three-week conflict.)

In 1976, President Gerald R. Ford, in his second presidential debate with Democrat Jimmy Carter, asserted that there was "no Soviet domination of eastern Europe." (Ford later conceded such was not the case.)

In 1979, Pope John Paul II, on a week-long U.S. tour, became the first pontiff to visit the White House, where he was received by President Jimmy Carter.

In 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was shot to death by extremists while reviewing a military parade.

In 1989, actress Bette Davis died in Neuilly-sur-Seine (nu-yee-sur-sehn), France, at age 81.

Ten years ago: Pakistan's Gen. Pervez Musharraf won a presidential election boycotted by most of his opponents. British adventurer Jason Lewis finally returned home, completing a 13-year, 46,000-mile human-powered circumnavigation of the globe at Greenwich, England.

Five years ago: Five terror suspects, including Egyptian-born preacher Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, widely known as Abu Hamza al-Masri, arrived in the United States from England and appeared in court in New York and Connecticut. (Mustafa was convicted in 2014 of supporting terrorist organizations.)

One year ago: President Barack Obama offered 102 federal inmates the chance to leave prison early, bringing to 774 the number of sentences Obama had shortened. A jury in Norfolk, Virginia, acquitted a white police officer charged in the shooting death of a mentally ill black man holding a knife.

Mowing the greens now, heavy dew this morning so having to blow them off (TWSS) and while the mowers don't bother me at all the sound of those 2 cycle blowers is rather annoying.

39-25 is a good game ( I watched most of it) but mediocre teams can put on a good game against each other.  2 mediocre teams at best is how so.  Beyond about the top 12 are all so-so teams this year.  Big shortage of high quality quarterbacks and defensive players of all positions, just not enough good ones to go around right now.  Then there are the widespread major program coaching issues

So?  Where is Dabo going next year or is Clemson ready to pony up $6-8 million+/year?

They already upped his salary, he just started construction on a new house, his oldest is a freshman on the team and two other boys in HS.  Pretty sure he is happy where he is.  He doesn't strike me a a person who would jump for a million or two more and give away all he has.  Not everyone is a Pitino.

$2-3 million per year adds a lot of satisfaction to life's dreams.  Just the way it is, big time NCAA football is a money sport now and nothing more,  all decisions are monetary based.

That said LSU would probably be at the front of the line to offer him $6-7 million except that would cost them an additional $30 million over about 6 years because of previous internal fuk-ups and Tom Herman Fuk'n them over.   Unfortunately  LSU has got some rugged years ahead unless some genie in a bottle comes along and makes a few wishes come true.

Just signed an 8 year 54 million dollar deal....averages 6.75 million a year.  Not too shabby.  I believe that puts him in the top 5 nationally.
Certainly up there but God only knows what the $ limit will be for next year the way things are going lately.
True, but I just believe that some folks are satisfied with what they got.  Take Defensive coach Venables.  Makes about 1.5 mil.  Solid for an assistant coach.  Name is mentioned every year for the head coaching vacancies.  Reasons he stays, satisfaction, has a son entering Clemson next year, is not real enamored with the BS and CEO part of a head coach position.  So there is probably only 5 or 6 positions that he would really consider.  That satisfaction of coaches and players is a big reason Clemson has had the success it has.

Most coordinators are not able and/or interested in managing the alumni donors, media and internal politics associated with head coaching jobs in larger programs is why they choose to remain coordinators.  They know their own limits so to speak , and I strongly admire that quality.
Same does not apply to head coaches though, they are pompous arrogant BS'rs with those special talents for the most part.  The truly great ones have one more special skill set - recruiting!

In a much more entertaining game, NC State puts away Louisville 39 - 25.
Two "ranked" teams that demonstrate just how weak college teams are this year.
How so?  It was a good game.

Exactly what Tom Herman said right after Houston gave him a $2 million raise and a few months before accepting positions at LSU and then TX, he sold his almost new $1.6 million home in Houston and bought a new $6 million mansion in Austin.  Money talks and bullshit walks.
True, call me a Pollyanna, but I think some men are still honest, and are satisfied with where they are.
Pollyanna on acid.

And with that, I'm tired of playing with myself, so on with the weekend.
Enjoy. Thank you for your contribution.

I'm be joining you for a smoke in 2 more hours.
By the way, I lit an unbanded churchill today. Nothing exceptional but decent tobacco flavors. still smoking it. Have no idea what it is and where I got it. I'd guess it was Dominican.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171006/65053f2192aec5cf4fae870b79078d8b.jpg)

Are we sure today isn't the full moon? Saw a bunch of crazies today. Besides the comic con geeks, I saw a guy sticking his finger down his throat to make himself puke, right in the middle of Madison Ave (middle of the street). Then I saw a "lady" pull down her drawers, squat, and pee in the middle of the sidewalk on 38th street. She wasn't at all bashful. WTF?
