Today is Monday, Jan. 9, the ninth day of 2017. There are 356 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 9, 1788, Connecticut became the fifth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

On this date:

In 1793, Frenchman Jean Pierre Blanchard, using a hot-air balloon, flew between Philadelphia and Woodbury, New Jersey.

In 1861, Mississippi became the second state to secede from the Union, the same day the Star of the West, a merchant vessel bringing reinforcements and supplies to Federal troops at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, retreated because of artillery fire.

In 1913, Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, was born in Yorba Linda, California.

In 1914, the County of Los Angeles opened the country's first public defender's office. The fraternity Phi Beta Sigma was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

In 1916, the World War I Battle of Gallipoli ended after eight months with an Ottoman Empire victory as Allied forces withdrew.

In 1931, Bobbi Trout and Edna May Cooper broke an endurance record for female aviators as they returned to Mines Field in Los Angeles after flying a Curtiss Robin monoplane continuously for 122 hours and 50 minutes.

In 1945, during World War II, American forces began landing on the shores of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines as the Battle of Luzon got underway, resulting in an Allied victory over Imperial Japanese forces.

In 1957, Anthony Eden resigned as British prime minister for health reasons; he was succeeded by Harold Macmillan.

In 1968, the Surveyor 7 space probe made a soft landing on the moon, marking the end of the American series of unmanned explorations of the lunar surface.

In 1972, reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes, speaking by telephone from the Bahamas to reporters in Hollywood, said a purported autobiography of him by Clifford Irving was a fake.

In 1987, the White House released a Jan. 1986 memorandum prepared for President Ronald Reagan by Lt. Col. Oliver L. North showing a link between U.S. arms sales to Iran and the release of American hostages in Lebanon.

In 1997, a Comair commuter plane crashed 18 miles short of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, killing all 29 people on board.

Ten years ago: U.S. forces continued to stage airstrikes against suspected al-Qaida fighters in Somalia in the first offensive there since 18 American soldiers were killed in 1993. Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone, which went on sale the following June. Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Carlo Ponti, the Italian movie producer who discovered - and married - actress Sophia Loren, died in Geneva at age 94.

Five years ago: Iranian state radio reported that a court had convicted former U.S. Marine Amir Mirzaei Hekmati of working for the CIA and sentenced him to death. (The Obama administration and his family denied Hekmati was a CIA spy; Hekmati was released in Jan. 2016 as part of a prisoner swap.) President Barack Obama announced that chief of staff William Daley was quitting; he was succeeded by Obama budget chief Jack Lew. Former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame. No. 2 Alabama beat No. 1 LSU 21-0 for the first shutout in BCS title game history.

One year ago: French Jewish leaders and the nation's prime minister, Manuel Valls, held a memorial ceremony for four people killed in a kosher market a year earlier by an attacker claiming ties to the Islamic State group. Actor Angus Scrimm, 89, the "Tall Man" in the "Phantasm" horror films, died in Tarzana, California.

The EPC was excellent and I really like the La Mission line. I picked up the Chupacabra in Somerville and it was surprisingly good, even when the Giants were shitting the bed

Yes, last weekend. Figured that was all I was going to get out of it for the season. That said, it only takes about 2 minutes to re-hang and plug in

The stove burns @ over 600 degrees and we could still only get the garage to about 50 degrees, good enough to smoke but we need to insulate

Put cement board on the walls where it sits in the corner, insulated flue pipe through the wall and up, all good
insulation is good too, inexpensive, and easy enough for Tony to do, after he fixes the holes in the dining room floor.

Had a great smoking day watching football yesterday. Had an EPC Capa de Sol from NJDave followed by a La Mission 2009 and an Esteban Carreras Chupacabra Chupita which was a great little cigar.
That fire pit is working out for you?
No this was in Andy's garage with his burn-barrel stove going
That makes more sense. I'm assuming you brought the tv in for the winter from behind the barn door?
The stove burns @ over 600 degrees and we could still only get the garage to about 50 degrees, good enough to smoke but we need to insulate
Those things look pretty darn cool but I'm not sure I would light one in a garage unless it was 100% cinder block.
Put cement board on the walls where it sits in the corner, insulated flue pipe through the wall and up, all good
Burns propane?
Wood, it's basically a 55 gallon drum. They sell kits for them, legs, door, vent. You lay it down

Ahhh, that's a different story. I was picturing an open barrel, no flue. I've seen them outdoors attached to a propane tank. Wouldn't want to light one of those in the middle of a garage.

I insulated the garage when it was being built, both for the garage and because two of the upstairs bedrooms are partly over it.

I haven't found anything on this. Room101 is pretty popular and although the brand is ultimately owned by Davidoff, not sure why the CEO of Room101 would just up and leave.

Usually when stuff like this does happen, they take a year or so off because of a non-compete clause and then come back again under a new brand.

True, but he's not a full time cigar person.  He has all of his other Hollywood / jewelry / design interests he can spend more time on.  Cigars was more like a fun pastime, that maybe isn't fun anymore.

my follow up has been moved up to 7:30am tomorrow instead of Wednesday afternoon for a culture scrapping to see what is in my neck seeing how the ER only looked at it and prescribed antibiotics not knowing what it was. medical center not happy with the lack of 'minimal medical care'.
Are you sure those aren't ben wa balls?
I'm sure. some of my women may have that pleasure though.
Is it warm up down there yet? You may need to move further south.

64° now. mid to high 70's all week.
further south you go the higher the rent. besides, I love the rural area here. best part of old florida left so far.

I don't get it. How does this equate to me saying I spent too much on cigars past 45 days and need to take a break?
I think the joke is that you and I need all the work done for us. Too lazy to find it on our own.

Edit: I'm more confused by Ogie's comment,  "In other news, water is wet." Was Booth's departure a given? Obviously I'm not hip to all the goings on in the industry.

"Matt Booth leaves cigar industry".  In other news, water is wet.

I guess I can see that. I'm not convinced he's completely out. Only time will tell.

Are the deer attracted to the cigar smoke? Be careful they don't walk into the garage.

And before I get lectured about being lazy, I don't pay for ESPN, it isn't being broadcast on any of the big networks, and web searches produce a lot of sites that say they have the live score but don't.
