Morning, boyos. Happy Friday!
Good morning to you, GolfingDave. That was a very quick month. Hopefully, it was also the coldest of them, and Spring is right around the corner.
Sure hope so. Got up to 48 here yesterday, which was nice. High of 44 today, but a low of 19, so the cold is already clamoring to make a return.
Downside of that is that it also rained last night, and coupled with the melting snow and saturated ground, gave way to lots of flooding in the area. There was a water main break near the kids school which caused the wife to have to detour around it to drop them off. Then after dropping the oldest off at work, she had to detour again, as the most direct route back to our house was also closed off. Sheesh!
Now that's funny. My son's high school is in a really bad flood zone and they also had a water main break yesterday. He wound up being bussed home early, but today we were back like there had been no issue at all.

Yeah, that category was way out there for me, never would've gotten it on my own. But I've learned a new fact today.

I applaud your optimism, but I remember February as being the worst winter month, particularly in regard to white precipitation.

Birthday party for the younger two coming up on Sunday, so the kids will be doing a bit of house cleaning the next 2 days. But my sister and her family will be in town for the party, so that'll be nice.
Sounds like a win/win. Clean house, plus spending time with family. If there would be cigar smoking, you'd have the trifecta.
Is this the PA sister?  You can arrange for a CI and a Pork Roll delivery.

By the way, I learned yesterday that Riga is the capital of Latvia.
And in case it comes up, for her sister countries, the capital of Lithuania is Vilnius and for Estonia it's Tallinn.
(the mother country...Lithuania that is)

Today is Friday, Jan. 31, the 31st day of 2025
with 334 to follow.

The moon is waxing. Morning stars are Jupiter, Mars, Mercury and Uranus. Evening stars are Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Venus.

On this date in history:

1917, Germany announces it will wage unrestricted submarine warfare against all ships, including passenger carriers, in war-zone waters.

In 1929, the Soviet Union expelled communist revolutionary Leon Trotsky. He was assassinated in Mexico in August 1940.

In 1945, U.S. Army Pvt. Eddie Slovik, 24, was executed by firing squad for desertion. His was the first U.S. execution for desertion since the Civil War and the only one to take place during World War II. His remains, buried in an unmarked grave in France, were returned to the United States in 1987.

In 1953, nearly 2,000 people died when the North Sea flooded the Netherlands.

In 1958, Explorer 1, the first successful U.S. satellite, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

In 1961, NASA launched a rocket carrying Ham the Chimp into space.

In 1968, Viet Cong guerillas raided the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, the Tan Son Nhut airbase and five hotels housing American officials as part of the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War.

In 1971, Apollo 14, the third U.S. mission to land on the moon, blasted off using a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Commander Alan Shepard and lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell landed in the Fra Mauro formation in the lunar highlands, while command module pilot Stuart Roosa orbited the moon.

In 1982, the Israeli Cabinet agreed to a multinational peacekeeping force to act as a buffer between Israel and Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula.

In 1990, Moscow's first McDonald's restaurant opened.

In 1991, Iraqi forces crossed into Saudi Arabia engaging allied troops in a firefight before being driven back across the border. Eleven U.S. Marines died and two were injured in another battle. They were the first Americans to die in the Gulf War ground combat.

In 1996, a suicide bombing at Sri Lanka's main bank killed nearly 100 people and injured more than 1,000.

In 2001, a Scottish court meeting in the Netherlands convicted a Libyan man, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. The plane exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 270 people, including 11 on the ground. The convicted bomber died in 2012.

In 2006, Samuel Alito was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court by a 58-42 vote. He succeeded retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

In 2012, a U.S. congressional report accused the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives of bungling a sting operation called "Fast and Furious" in which guns were sold to illegal "straw buyers" in an effort to catch drug cartel leaders, but some of the weapons were used in crimes, including the killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

In 2022, an investigative report given to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that parties held by him and attended by various officials in 2020 during the country's COVID-19 lockdown reflected a "serious failure" in government. The scandal played a role in Johnson's resignation that summer.

It is. She's coming in this weekend because a friend of hers from college has written a book and is doing a book signing event near where we went to college. So it was a happy coincidence that the dates lined up.

I didn't think of pork roll, but I can get it in the non-sliced variety at a market nearby, so supply for that isn't an issue. However, I do wish I'd thought to ask her to get me some maple pepper seasoning from a store near the downtown CI store. I would love to go back there, they had an amazing selection of spices and olive oil.

Nolan Ryan was my favorite player growing up, I still have a crate of cards and figures and so forth of his. And for a long time, the front page of the sports section with a picture of him giving Robin Ventura the business hung on my bedroom wall. :D
