So layoffs are expected to be announced this week and we just got emailed the promotions list instead. Normally I would say that's a great thing but I think they are going to be tacky and lay a bunch of folks off anyway. I only recognized two names and I recently worked with both of them on a project. Well, actually they did very little. Therefore I'm not surprised they got promoted. But I'm not bitter, really.
I keep trying to get my wife to go for the assistance manager position, but she says she doesn't know how to do the job. I asked her if the last 5 assistance managers knew what they were doing...? She said, "no." So I asked, "then what seems to be the problem...?"
Around here not knowing shit about what we do or why we do it are the first two qualifications for promotions.
I took a test years ago, and this was one of the questions. You have to promote one of the following two people.
Betty, has worked at the company for 5 years. She always on time, very efficient, never sick, and often does tasks before being asked. You could not ask for a better employee than Betty.
The other women is Alice. Alice has 20 years with the company. She's very slow in completing tasks, makes allot of personal phone calls, takes long brakes, and often calls in sick. She also has a poor old sickly mother that she often takes off work to help.
Who would you promote..?
Answer: You would promote Alice. If you promote Betty, you would be left with no one to do the work. It's apparent that Betty can work by herself without supervision. By promoting Alice, she would become a supervisor over some one that does not need supervision.
