They include:Henrietta Lacks, cancer patients whose cells became the subject of medial research, in 1920; Possibly the greatest single contributor to genetics and modern medicine although posthumously. Cells from her cancer (called HeLa) are still alive today and used in a great number of research projects and in a large amount of biological drug manufacturing. Interesting quick read as to the history: "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"She is also the reason we have to sign forms before surgery concerning what the hospital is going to do with removed parts...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henrietta_Lacks#

There was an evolutionary biologist who contended that the HeLa cells represent a new species. The hypothesis hasn't been taken seriously by the broader scientific community, but the peculiarity of the cells - especially that they contain a non-human number of chromosomes - is bizarre and intriguing.

Instead of the normal 46 (23 pairs) HeLa range anywhere from 70 to 164. Fine for a cancer cell, but deadly if trying to construct a human. Plants do much better with extra chromosomes as tetraploid varieties (twice the normal chromosomes) generally have larger, more showy flowers.Fascinating field. I minored in it with my two older getting degrees in genetics. We generally piss off the youngest who was a Mech E major when talking "shop"..
