Didn't consider Maya Lin.
Who pays attention to an architect?
Apparently me. I got a coupla people on the wall.
I remember the furor when she got the commission to build it. Having been born as the war was heating up, it was a huge thing during the first ten years of my life. When I first saw the design, and read her explanation of it, I was really stunned at how perfectly she'd walked the tightrope. Artistically and personally, I really dislike the inclusion of the statues that were forced on her.
The Americans who died in that war deserve honor. The war itself does not, and none of the men I've known who fought there think it should be, including my cousin, who volunteered for the Corps to exact revenge for a friend who'd died there and nearly bled out himself in a dry riverbed in Quang Tri with two NVA slugs in him.
Lin's concept of a scar in the earth was perfect. Scars represent pain. Scars represent valor. Scars represent mistakes. Scars represent lessons learned.
