Today is Friday, Jan. 6, the sixth day of 2017. There are 359 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 6, 1967, U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese troops launched Operation Deckhouse Five, an offensive in the Mekong River delta. The 10-day operation reportedly claimed the lives of 21 Viet Cong fighters along with seven Americans.

On this date:

In 1017, Cnut the Great was crowned King of England at Old St. Paul's Cathedral in London, just over a month following the death of his predecessor, Edmund II.

In 1540, England's King Henry VIII married his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. (The marriage lasted about six months.)

In 1759, George Washington and Martha Dandridge Custis were married in New Kent County, Virginia.

In 1838, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail gave the first successful public demonstration of their telegraph in Morristown, New Jersey.

In 1912, New Mexico became the 47th state.

In 1919, the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, died in Oyster Bay, New York, at age 60.

In 1945, George Herbert Walker Bush married Barbara Pierce at the First Presbyterian Church in Rye, New York.

In 1950, Britain recognized the Communist government of China.

In 1974, year-round daylight saving time began in the United States on a trial basis as a fuel-saving measure in response to the OPEC oil embargo.

In 1987, the U.S. Senate voted 88-4 to establish an 11-member panel to hold public hearings on the Iran-Contra affair.

In 1994, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed on the leg by an assailant at Detroit's Cobo Arena; four men, including the ex-husband of Kerrigan's rival, Tonya Harding, went to prison for their roles in the attack. (Harding denied knowing about plans for the attack.)

In 2001, with Vice President Al Gore presiding in his capacity as president of the Senate, Congress formally certified George W. Bush the winner of the bitterly contested 2000 presidential election.

Ten years ago: At a Baptist church in Fort Worth, Texas, the Denver Broncos filed past the open casket of Darrent Williams, the promising cornerback who had been gunned down in a drive-by shooting on New Year's Day. A large avalanche pushed two cars off the heavily traveled road at Berthoud Pass in Colorado, but no deaths resulted.

Five years ago: A bomb exploded at a busy Damascus intersection, killing 25 people and wounding dozens in the second major attack in the Syrian capital in as many weeks. The Obama administration expanded the FBI's more than eight-decades-old definition of rape to count men as victims for the first time and to drop the requirement that victims physically resisted their attackers. Roger Boisjoly, a NASA contractor who had repeatedly voiced concerns about the space shuttle Challenger before it exploded in 1986, died in Nephi, Utah, at age 73. New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien agreed to become Penn State's new football coach. (O'Brien held the position for two seasons.)

One year ago: North Korea said that it had conducted a powerful hydrogen bomb test, a claim greeted with widespread skepticism. Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Actor-comedian Pat Harrington Jr., 86, died in Los Angeles.

Furniture assembly reminded me....
As this was the first Christmas dealing with toys after many years, I was pleasantly surprised to find that packaging is using a twist lock mechanism like what is used on furniture for assembly rather than a multitude of twist ties or cable ties.  Makes unpacking much easier!

But did you get a special (redhead) thank you after assembly?

Welcome back BurninTheCandleAtBothEndsRaz.
Sad truth.
wtf, Bret... what is it, like 5 am there??
Morning Steve.  Didn't sleep worth a crap myself.  Guess everyone was just too excited about the jam.
Spent a few hours after work yesterday putting together our new tv stand. Slept like a baby because of it.

What, you couldn't just put the new tv on top of the old tv?
Where the hell were you yesterday?!?

Furniture assembly reminded me....
As this was the first Christmas dealing with toys after many years, I was pleasantly surprised to find that packaging is using a twist lock mechanism like what is used on furniture for assembly rather than a multitude of twist ties or cable ties.  Makes unpacking much easier!
Even the twist tie ones have gotten easier in recent years. Used to be you needed an act of Congress to get something out of the box.

Morning, Bean. Most folks around these parts are worried about the pounding they're gonna get tonight... but it's probably gonna be only a couple inches.
Boy heading back today, ahead of schedule to beat it.
What do you mean ONLY a couple of inches.  Wasn't it ONLY 3" that destroyed Atlanta a couple of years ago?
It was actually ice, and the fact that every school, government office and business let out at exactly the same time... 30 minutes after it was already too late. Poor planning. They gave it the old "I don't think anything's gonna happen" and regretted it.
Had a friend who lives near Atlanta get caught in that. Ended up spending the night at a stranger's house because he got stuck on the highway for hours.
Sounds like the beginning of a great Dean-type story.  "...her husband was away on business and in her haste to answer the door had only loosely tied her robe...."

Yeah, some stories for the ages from that for sure. My normal 35 minute commute took me almost 7 hours. Mostly because of re-routes because roads were blocked by multiple fender benders, or people no knowing how to take on a slick hill.

good morning all!  glad to have survived the catastrophic 1/2" of snow last night!
Hey there, Sam. Hope you stocked up on canned goods!
No, milk, bread and eggs!
Don't listen to them, which would you rather have if you're stuck at home for a few days - bread and eggs, or an actual variety of food? ;)
I got cigars, I got beer, I got scotch, some whatever in the freezer, cans of whatever in cupboard....I'm good.
Sounds like you're adequately prepared for most natural disasters - flood, snow, acts of electorate. ;)
I just like that he used the term "cupboard"
What do you call it?

Curious. What do you call the patch of grass between the sidewalk and the street? (not a set-up for a joke, legit asking)

Just asked because it seems like a regional thing. My BIL is from Bethlehem, and when he heard the midwest term for it, he could not get over it, cause he didn't have a name for it either. We call it a tree lawn.

Next question - who are the 3 Stooges? Like, in what order would you say their names if someone asked? (And no, Shemp does not count. We're talking original 3 here)

Agreed. Although, I have "balanced" a plastic beer cup on the chrome flush value at a concert/sports venue... or two. I'm not proud of it, but that beer was probably $10. lol

Wound up making a Chipotle Chicken & Rice soup. It's simmering while I'm at the doctor's office. Feeling under the weather the last two days. #ThanksObama

I'm very particular about public restroom etiquette. I'm generally in there for one purpose (peeing, because #2 gets done at home). I don't touch anything, keep the breathing to a minimum, in and out as quickly as possible.

Cabinet
Curious. What do you call the patch of grass between the sidewalk and the street? (not a set-up for a joke, legit asking)
Didn't know there was a term for that, I don't have sidewalks
Just asked because it seems like a regional thing. My BIL is from Bethlehem, and when he heard the midwest term for it, he could not get over it, cause he didn't have a name for it either. We call it a tree lawn.

Next question - who are the 3 Stooges? Like, in what order would you say their names if someone asked? (And no, Shemp does not count. We're talking original 3 here)
Tree lawn is funny, it's simple and makes sense.

Moe, Larry, Curly
That's another regional one. Has to do with how they were referred to on tv locally, is what I've heard. Here, we say Larry, Curly and Moe.

I know more about Larry, Curly and Moe than tv executives do, believe me.

It's getting close to lunchtime. I'm thinking soup.
sounds like a good plan to me. had a ham sandwich at the desk, but may just slip out to the car for a cigar now that you've got me thinking that way.  made some chicken soup last weekend and finished that off yesterday.
Wound up making a Chipotle Chicken & Rice soup. It's simmering while I'm at the doctor's office. Feeling under the weather the last two days. #ThanksObama

soup sounds great!  illness does not...  hate obummer care, but been in gubmt long enough to know that repealing an act without something to take it's place is...well, a bit risky.
of course it helps to know that those making the decisions won't have to use whatever stupidity they dream up when they finally come up with something.

Was just in the bathroom, and a guy already in there had his water bottle on the floor next to his feet while he's at the urinal. Now, I don't know about you, but other than actually IN the urinal, I think that might be the last place I'd put something that I would later drink out of.

Agreed. Although, I have "balanced" a plastic beer cup on the chrome flush value at a concert/sports venue... or two. I'm not proud of it, but that beer was probably $10. lol
Always finish the beer first and then buy another on the way back to my seat.

I'm very particular about public restroom etiquette. I'm generally in there for one purpose (peeing, because #2 gets done at home). I don't touch anything, keep the breathing to a minimum, in and out as quickly as possible.
Mark, come back, we need you!
I didn't even intend it that way but it is applicable.

Don't have a word for tree lawn here either, but when I hear the phrase "curb your dog" I figure that's the area their talking about.

+1 on Moe, Larry, and Curly

I know, right. May as well join them and try and beat the snow storm warning that is supposed to begin at 4pm.

Since when did they start naming snow storms for cripes sakes?  evidently this one is named "Helena"
Since the Weather Channel had nothing better to do.

Storms are worse now because of climate change so they have to be named.   ::)

may go for an H Upman Media Noche or Punch rare corojo though....

Quite a few choices... I'm deciding between a Headley Grange corona or an Aquitaine knuckle dagger. May end up smoking both.  :D

This article was first published in issue 252 of Empire magazine.

..."Larry, Moe and Curly (the classic Stooge line-up) are stitched into the cultural fabric of America in a way that few entertainers are, rivaling Marilyn and Elvis for kitsch-cult supremacy."

just sayin...

That's quite the lynguistic analysis for an accomplished wordsmith, but I'm gonna have to site post #242 for an official ruling.   ;)

Wrrrooooooong! You're forgetting the "and". Therefore it's 1-2-1-2 syllables. Moe, Larry, AND Curly.

A little Friday afternoon chuckle for you.

An elderly, but hardy cattleman from Texas once told a young female neighbor that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on her oatmeal each morning.  She did this religiously and lived to the age of 103.  She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a 40 foot hole where the crematorium used to be.

I agree. Started with the HG... the label had too much glue and ruined the wrapper on the final third. Even waited until it burned down until the last possible puff before removing. Good smoke,  but left me wanting more. So, knuckle dragger up!

I've smoked one and thought it not up to par with others in the Crowned Heads line. The taste was a bit off-putting and I didn't enjoy it (TW.....) But that's just one.  Letting the others rest a while longer.
