December 22 is.............Date Nut Bread Day

It’s worth laying on a spread to celebrate Date Nut Bread Day – but the question is whether to choose butter or cream cheese! Nobody seems to know for sure who decided that this delicious fruity bread should get its own day, despite evidence that the holiday has been celebrated for years. Published recipes for the bread “date” back to the 1920s, but fruited breads were also known in earlier centuries and many different parts of the world.

Today is Thursday, Dec. 22, the 357th day of 2016. There are nine days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Dec. 22, 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in Washington for a wartime conference with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

On this date:

In 1775, Esek Hopkins was appointed the commander-in-chief of the Continental Navy.

In 1894, French army officer Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason in a court-martial that triggered worldwide charges of anti-Semitism. (Dreyfus was eventually vindicated.)

In 1910, a fire lasting more than 26 hours broke out at the Chicago Union Stock Yards; 21 firefighters were killed in the collapse of a burning building.

In 1937, the first, center tube of the Lincoln Tunnel connecting New York City and New Jersey beneath the Hudson River was opened to traffic. (The second tube opened in 1945, the third in 1957.)

In 1940, author Nathanael West, 37, and his wife, Eileen McKenney, were killed in a car crash in El Centro, California, while en route to the funeral of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who had died the day before.

In 1944, during the World War II Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Brig. Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe rejected a German demand for surrender, writing "Nuts!" in his official reply.

In 1968, Julie Nixon married David Eisenhower in a private ceremony in New York.

In 1977, three dozen people were killed when a 250-foot-high grain elevator at the Continental Grain Company plant in Westwego, Louisiana, exploded.

In 1989, Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu (chow-SHES'-koo), the last of Eastern Europe's hard-line Communist rulers, was toppled from power in a popular uprising. Playwright Samuel Beckett died in Paris at age 83.

In 1991, the body of Marine Lt. Col. William R. Higgins, an American hostage slain by his terrorist captors, was recovered after it had been dumped along a highway in Lebanon.

In 2001, Richard C. Reid, a passenger on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami, tried to ignite explosives in his shoes, but was subdued by flight attendants and fellow passengers. (Reid is serving a life sentence in federal prison.)

In 2010, President Barack Obama signed a law allowing gays for the first time in history to serve openly in America's military, repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Ten years ago: Rape charges were dropped against three Duke University lacrosse players, but kidnapping and sexual offense charges remained. (Those charges were later dropped as well.) Space shuttle Discovery returned to Earth after a smooth, 13-day flight to rewire the international space station.

Five years ago: A wave of 16 bombings ripped across Baghdad, killing at least 69 people in the worst violence in Iraq in months. It happened days after the last American forces left the country, heightening fears of a new round of sectarian bloodshed. Melanie Amaro, a 19-year-old vocalist from Sunrise, Florida, won the first U.S. season of "The X Factor" talent competition on Fox.

One year ago: Migration experts said more than a million people who had been driven out of their countries by war, poverty and persecution entered Europe in 2015. Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was named The Associated Press college football player of the year.

“The one thing women don’t want to find in their stockings on Christmas morning is their husband.” -Joan Rivers

“Christmas and the New Year are actually two holidays. So there is a plural, which in the English language, necessitates the use of ‘s.’ I suppose you could say ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Happy New Year,’ but you probably have sh*t to do.” — On Bill O’Reilly’s objection to “Happy Holidays” - Jon Stewart

“The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.” - George Carlin

“The Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot have a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. This wasn’t for any religious reasons. They couldn’t find three wise men and a virgin.” - Jay Leno

“This past Christmas, I told my girlfriend for months in advance that all I wanted was an Xbox. That’s it. Beginning and end of list, Xbox. You know what she got me? A homemade frame with a picture of us from our first date together. Which was fine. Because I got her an Xbox.” - Anthony Jeselnik

Austin skyline will continue to change in 2017 as housing booms

What does the future of the Austin’s housing market look like?
Economists say 2017 will be another strong year for Austin. With at least 30,000 newcomers moving to the area every year and 100 everyday, the growth is hitting the housing market.

But the kicker is:

“The young ‘next-gen’ generation who moves to Austin doesn’t necessarily want to own a car. Rarely do they own a car. They want to be in a workable neighborhood. They don’t want to be tied down to housing. A single family home,” said Angelos Angelou, CEO of Angelou Economics.

I didn't think the prequels were bad. Even Jar Jar Binks didn't bother me. In fact, the 3rd one was really good. Then again, I kept my expectations very low for all 3 since I had heard so much about them.

I'm hosting Christmas Eve and I just found out that my wife's 90 year old aunt will be flying in tomorrow and staying with us as a surprise for her "younger" sisters. Off to the dentist to get crowned.  I hope I get one with rubys and sapphires.
that should help you towards winning that weight loss contest.
So the tech is fitting the new crown, place, check, remove, adjust, replace, check, remove, adjust, replace...oops, she drops it into the back of my throat, and I reflexively swallow the sumbitch.  Back in with the temporary for another two weeks while the replacement is made.  FML.
you don't want to use it after you pass it?

morning Tony, Scott, BS, and Mark.

Hey there, Deano... So, who gets your morning Christmas gift this year, the lady or the redhead? Or maybe you'll try for the double double.  ;)
the redhead is heading for the big island tomorrow I think and won't be back until after the new year.
lady spending the night Christmas Eve and doing presents and breakfast here, then to her house for Christmas with her daughters and grandsons, the day after to Bronson for her son and DIL who don't give a shit about holidays.

Redhead didn't ask you to Hawaii?
yes she did but there's no way I could come up with that kind of money and I can't mooch THAT much even if she is rich. I'd feel like a gigolo.

Time to move up your exit timetable.

What did you think of Rogue 1 Dave?  I saw it yesterday as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. The new movies continue to be everything we were hoping the prequels would be. How about you?
Liked that it took a decidedly different tone.  Linked for sure, with enough nods to the other movies, but didn't try to be just a bridge between two others.  Enjoyed that it teased at a Star Wars opening, but never did the scroll or familiar music.  Thought the CGI human characters were interesting.

I didn't think the prequels were bad. Even Jar Jar Binks didn't bother me. In fact, the 3rd one was really good. Then again, I kept my expectations very low for all 3 since I had heard so much about them.
The 3rd one I liked the most, but what I didn't like about them the most was the lightsaber fighting. It was so choreographed it was almost like dancing.
Though, Jar Jar Binks did very much bother me. Lol

Yeah, Meesa thinks he ruined that whole movie. The Pod race was pretty good in the IMax though.
No Jedi in this one, and only one piece with a lightsaber, but it was pretty outstanding.

Boy just called and he has an all inclusive company condo in Jamaica for the week of January 16 and invited the warden and I to join them.

Only down side is they will not send the jet over here to pick us up  :(  But Southwest does have a direct flight to and from Houston
there's a nice way to start the year off right.

I may take a trip to the Keys with the redhead when she gets back, be a nice boat ride. I like being her deck hand.

morning Tony, Scott, BS, and Mark.
Good morning, ReadyForChristmasDeano. Wish I could say I was as ready. I'm hosting Christmas Eve and I just found out that my wife's 90 year old aunt will be flying in tomorrow and staying with us as a surprise for her "younger" sisters. Let's just say this woman is very opinionated and keeping her hidden for 36 hours won't be easy.
Just like a day on the banter with TexDave!   ;)
She'll be a lot harder to ignore.
could always lock her in a closet or the cellar.
That doesn't seem very kind and Christianlike.

Anyone tried the Lirio Rojo? Pricey little sumbitches.
I picked up five but have them resting.  Not wanting to try them in less than ideal (cold) conditions.  Broke my own rule of not buying unbanded cigars (as I forget what they are after being in the humi for a while), but as they are the only ones and in a special humi, I should be OK.

Big reason I wasn't as big a RoMa Craft cigar fan early on...would only smoke them at a B&M.  How can you sell a 6+ dollar cigar and not be able to affort a band?  Heck, buy Gurkha bands and use a quarter of them per cigar....

last of the Christmas presents are wrapped. come on Christ child, I am ready for your birthday.
I got to do some wrapping sometime tomorrow or Saturday.  DIL wrapped what I had ready while she was here which certainly helped!
I got 1/2 of my Christmas present the other day; new battery in the truck. tomorrow I get the other 1/2, oil change.
Yeah, I need one of those as well, but I never get to use the coupons, IS 250 takes 7.5 quarts of synthetic oil.  :o

A Cajun-Spiked Spin on Christmas Eggnog

That includes Christmas. Lafayette native and former One Flew South bartender Tiffanie Barriere loves classic eggnog, and she especially loves it the way her mom makes it—with cognac. Cognac was America’s favorite spirit for cocktails in the 19th century, and while the rest of the country mostly abandoned the aged French brandy in favor of whiskey, it’s remained popular in Louisiana ever since. (Credit the state’s French heritage—and the appeal of classic cognac cocktails invented there, like the Sazerac and Vieux Carré.) While rum or bourbon might be more typical base spirits for eggnog, milk punch, and other creamy cocktails, cognac adds a lovely floral and fruity character. “It’s sweeter and really balances out the milk and nutmeg, but it’s still super-boozy,” Barriere says.

Ingredients
 4 oz. Cognac
 1 oz. whole milk
 1 oz. heavy cream
 1 whole egg
 1 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg (plus more for garnish)

Preparation
Add all the ingredients to a shaker and shake (without ice) while singing, Barriere says, the first verse of your favorite holiday song (about 30 seconds). Open the shaker, fill with ice, and shake again. Strain into a Hurricane or large wine glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a light dusting of grated nutmeg.

Southern Classic: Bourbon Balls

What's not to love about bourbon, chocolate, and pecans?

Bourbon Balls
From Rhonda Ruckman, executive pastry chef of Herbsaint, Cochon Butcher, Calcasieu, and Pêche in New Orleans
Makes approximately 50

Ingredients
 2 cups pecan halves
2 cups shortbread cookies, crushed into crumbs (about 10 oz.)
½ cup plus 2 tbsp. heavy cream
 4 tbsp. light corn syrup
 2 tbsp. honey
9 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped (Ruckman likes Valrhona Equatoriale 55%)
2 tbsp., plus 1 tsp. bourbon (Ruckman likes Evan Williams Single Barrel or Buffalo Trace)
 1 vanilla bean
 ¼ cup sugar

Preparation

Place pecans on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees until fragrant. Set these aside and allow to cool.

Chop one cup of the pecans into small pieces and add to the shortbread crumbs in a large bowl. Set aside.

In a small sauce pot, heat together the cream, light corn syrup, and honey. Bring to a boil and pour over the chopped chocolate in a bowl. Let stand for one minute and mix to combine. Pour this mixture over the shortbread and pecans, and add the bourbon. Mix thoroughly.

Chill mixture for one hour in the refrigerator.

While mixture chills, slice a vanilla bean in half and scrape out the vanilla inside. Add to sugar and mix together. Chop the remaining pecans finely and add to the vanilla-sugar. Set aside.

Form the chilled crumb mixture into small balls with a teaspoon and roll them through the pecan-vanilla-sugar. Enjoy immediately or store in a sealed container for up to 5 days.
