December 7 is............Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day  (Usually just called Pearl Harbor Day)

“Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”
– President Franklin D. Roosevelt

There is a beautiful lagoon in the Hawaiian Islands that is named for the lustrous jewel that is formed when a piece of sand irritates a clam into coating it to protect itself. This harbor also houses the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet, and has been an important part of the American Naval placement in the Pacific Ocean since 1887. Little did anyone know at that time that an attack on this harbor would bring the entire might of the American Military into a war it was desperately seeking to avoid. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day honors the men and women who died in the Japanese attack on this beautiful harbor one December day in 1941.

History of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

The History of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is the history of the attack itself, an attack which took place on December 7th, 1941. The attack was devastating, killing over 2,400 citizens of the United States from the time it began at 7:48am Hawaiian time and ended just 90 minutes later, making the attack incredibly devastating. Multiple ships were lost during the attack, though things could have been much worse.

Intelligence gathered after the attack indicated that there was intended to be a third-wave of attacks to hit the island, complete with an invasion fleet intended to take the island and prevent it from being used as an American base of operation. The purpose behind this surprise attack? America was well positioned in the Pacific to interfere with Japanese fleet maneuvering, and it was hoped that by launching this assault they would cripple the US Pacific Presence and be able to control the ocean unhindered.

Today is Wednesday, Dec. 7, the 342nd day of 2016. There are 24 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Dec. 7, 1941, Imperial Japan's navy launched a pre-emptive attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, one of a series of raids in the Pacific. The United States declared war against Japan the next day.

On this date:

In 43 B.C., Roman statesman and scholar Marcus Tullius Cicero was slain at the order of the Second Triumvirate.

In 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

In 1842, the New York Philharmonic performed its first concert.

In 1909, chemist Leo H. Baekeland received a U.S. patent for Bakelite (BAY'-kuh-lyt), the first synthetic plastic.

In 1946, fire broke out at the Winecoff (WYN'-kahf) Hotel in Atlanta; the blaze killed 119 people, including hotel founder W. Frank Winecoff.

In 1965, Pope Paul VI and Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras I simultaneously lifted the mutual excommunications that had led to the split of their churches in 1054.

In 1972, America's last moon mission to date was launched as Apollo 17 blasted off from Cape Canaveral. Imelda Marcos, wife of Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos, was stabbed and seriously wounded by an assailant who was shot dead by her bodyguards.

In 1985, retired Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart died in Hanover, New Hampshire, at age 70.

In 1987, 43 people were killed after a gunman aboard a Pacific Southwest Airlines jetliner in California apparently opened fire on a fellow passenger, the pilots and himself, causing the plane to crash. Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev set foot on American soil for the first time, arriving for a Washington summit with President Ronald Reagan.

In 1993, gunman Colin Ferguson opened fire on a Long Island Rail Road commuter train, killing six people and wounding 19. (Ferguson was later sentenced to a minimum of 200 years in prison.)

In 1995, a 746-pound probe from the Galileo spacecraft hurtled into Jupiter's atmosphere, sending back data to the mothership before it was presumably destroyed.

In 2004, Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye) was sworn in as Afghanistan's first popularly elected president.

Ten years ago: President George W. Bush gave a chilly response to the Iraq Study Group's proposals for reshaping his policy, objecting to talks with Iran and Syria, refusing to endorse a major troop withdrawal and vowing no retreat from embattled U.S. goals in the Mideast. The U.S. military transferred the first group of Guantanamo Bay detainees to a new maximum-security prison on the naval base. Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, the first woman U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, died in Bethesda, Maryland, at age 80.

Five years ago: Rod Blagojevich, the ousted Illinois governor whose three-year battle against criminal charges became a national spectacle, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Veterans from Pearl Harbor observed the 70th anniversary of Japan's attack with a solemn ceremony at the site of the bombing. Veteran character actor Harry Morgan, 96, died in Brentwood, California.

One year ago: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States," an idea swiftly condemned by his rival GOP candidates for president and other Republicans. The federal government opened an investigation into the Chicago Police Department, the same day authorities announced they would not charge an officer in the shooting death of 25-year-old Ronald Johnson, a black man who authorities said was armed with a gun as he ran away from officers.

A special story for Pearl Harbor Day

Alex Horanzy, who volunteered for the Army infantry in July 1939, when he was 17 years old. A year later, he shipped out as part of the 24th infantry division to Schofield Barracks on Oahu, just 15 miles from the naval base at Pearl Harbor.

After the attack, Horenzy, from Northeast Philadelphia, fought in the invasion of New Guinea and the Philippines.

Posted codes the other day if anyone missed them:

cigarsintl.com/wreath (http://cigarsintl.com/wreath)

cigar.com/holiday (http://cigar.com/holiday)
And thank you.
Did you put them in the banter "Codes and Offers" folder?
Couldn't find it. What's the word on Luminosa?
First impression, pleasant but very mild and subtle.  I expected a bit more weight and spices as per most EPC's.  This one was light, very creamy mouth feel with bread and cashews.  Not much of a change over the smoke.  Kind of a La Careme without the chocolate.

It's one of those many upgrades that Tony has promised...not in place currently.   :-\

But seriously, I've watched portions of OSU games this year, and I honestly don't know how they manage to win some of them. Their offense is very one-dimensional. If I was a betting man, I'd probably pick Clemson.

True.  I think the offensive line is suspect and will not fair well against the Clemson rush.  See a harrassed JT making mistakes as you said the offense is pretty one-dimensional.  Clemson defense aside from the line play seems to be lulled to sleep at times.  Clemson offense when not thinking, just doing, is unstoppable.  It's when they try to be cute and change up from what's working that they loose their rhythm.

OSU is in the top 5 for least turnovers lost (9)... Clemson is 109 with (24)

If/when Clemson were to win, Bamas' D usually scores TD's on turnovers.

But stats don't get to carry crystal footballs. Anything could happen.

No, we have a system:  Dean tells us about the ladies and construction, Texas Redfish, complains about the
K2 vagrants and house hunting/selling.  Tony & I bitch about the wardens, Mark about crown molding and the cost of DPG's, sfish his busy schedule, travelling Dave, about the airports and travel.  Ohio Dave about not golfing enough.... there is a consistency about our bitching. you would have to pick a new topic
CNS, very thorough list, Flip.

Morning, Dave. Saw a box of LaNox toros on the Auction. Not sure your price point, but they were @134 to start.

Also a box of Aquitaine Mode 5's @85... both ending today
I'm good with the Mode 5's.  LaNox I still think are overpriced, but they are nice cigars.
Good but not attention getting.

Some good bonus money!

Kiffin will end up with $306,000 if the Crimson Tide takes the title — and that’s with him hitting a cap Alabama places on the bonus that assistants and head strength coach Scott Cochran can receive for the team’s bowl outcome.

Kiffin’s current annualized base salary is $1.4 million, which makes him the third-highest-paid football assistant at a public school, according to USA TODAY Sports’ new compensation survey.

Alabama’s appearance in the Southeastern Conference championship game qualified him and his fellow assistants for bonuses equal to 4% of base salary — in his case, $56,000.

He and the others also will get at least an amount equal to 14% of his base salary because Alabama is playing in one of the six games affiliated with the CFP — or, $196,000 for Kifffin.

If Alabama wins its semifinal, the assistants would get an additional 2% of his base salary. If it wins the championship, they would normally qualify for another 2% of base salary — but that would increase Kiffin’s bowl bonus to $252,000, and Alabama’s basic contract terms for football assistant coaches state that a bowl bonus cannot exceed $250,000.

Ohio State’s assistants and head strength coach Mickey Marotti have a similar percentage-based setup, with higher percentages — although with one less achievement this season than the Crimson Tide have had.

Ohio State assistant coach Luke Fickell will get a total of $255,000 in bonuses if the Buckeyes win the national championship.
They each are getting an amount equal to 8.5% of the salaries because the Buckeyes tied for the Big Ten East Division championship. For Fickell — whose salary is $750,000 — that’s $63,750.

But because the Buckeyes did not go to the Big Ten title game, they missed a chance to add another 4.25% of salary by winning the conference title.

However, the team’s appearance in the CFP semifinals means they will get another bonus of at least an amount equal to 21.25% of salary — $159,375 for Fickell

If Ohio State plays in the championship game, he and the others get an additional amount equal to 4.25% of salary — $31,875 in Fickell’s case.

Base salaries are not a factor for Washington’s and Clemson’s assistants. They all get the same bonus amounts, depending on the team’s success.

Washington’s assistants can get bonuses based on the team’s NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR), ranging from $2,000 if it’s at least 950 to $5,000 if it’s at least 970. They get $6,000 apiece if the team plays in the Pac-12 title game and another $10,000 if the Huskies win. Their appearance in the CFP semifinals is giving them an additional $45,000. A national title would give them $30,000 more. Altogether, that’s a maximum of $96,000.

Clemson’s assistants each get $10,000 for the team’s appearance in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game. They are getting another $50,000 because the Tigers are in a CFP semifinal. The payout will increase by $10,000 per coach if they advance to the final and by $25,000 more if they win the championship.
