Today is Monday, Nov. 7, the 312th day of 2016. There are 54 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Nov. 7, 1916, Republican Jeannette Rankin of Montana became the first woman elected to Congress, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

On this date:

In 1861, former U.S. President John Tyler was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives (however, Tyler died before he could take his seat).

In 1917, Russia's Bolshevik Revolution took place as forces led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin overthrew the provisional government of Alexander Kerensky.

In 1940, Washington state's original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, nicknamed "Galloping Gertie," collapsed into Puget Sound during a windstorm just four months after opening to traffic.

In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt won an unprecedented fourth term in office, defeating Republican Thomas E. Dewey.

In 1954, the CBS News program "Face the Nation" premiered with Ted Koop as host; the guest was Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R-Wis.

In 1962, Republican Richard Nixon, having lost California's gubernatorial race, held what he called his "last press conference," telling reporters, "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore." Former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, 78, died in New York City.

In 1966, John Lennon first met Yoko Ono at the Indica Gallery in London.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon was re-elected in a landslide over Democrat George McGovern.

In 1973, Congress overrode President Richard Nixon's veto of the War Powers Act, which limits a chief executive's power to wage war without congressional approval.

In 1989, L. Douglas Wilder won the governor's race in Virginia, becoming the first elected black governor in U.S. history; David N. Dinkins was elected New York City's first black mayor.

In 1991, basketball star Magic Johnson announced that he had tested positive for the AIDS virus, and was retiring. (Despite his HIV status, Johnson has been able to sustain himself with medication.)

In 1996, the U.S. liquor industry voted to drop its decades-old voluntary ban on broadcast advertising. A Nigerian Boeing 727 jetliner crashed en route to Lagos, killing 144 people. NASA's Mars Global Surveyor blasted off on a mission to map the surface of the Red Planet. (It went into orbit around Mars the next year.)

Ten years ago: Democrats won control of the House and Senate, riding a wave of anger over the Iraq war and congressional scandals; Keith Ellison, a Democratic state lawmaker from Minnesota, became the first Muslim elected to Congress. Panama won a seat on the U.N. Security Council after Guatemala and Venezuela dropped out to end a deadlock. Dhiren Barot, an al-Qaida operative who'd planned to blow up the New York Stock Exchange, the World Bank and landmark London hotels, was sentenced in Britain to life in prison. Pop star Britney Spears filed for divorce from Kevin Federline.

Five years ago: A jury in Los Angeles convicted Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, of involuntary manslaughter for supplying a powerful anesthetic implicated in the entertainer's 2009 death. (Murray was sentenced to four years in prison; he served two years, and was released in Oct. 2013.) Former heavyweight champion boxer Joe Frazier died in Philadelphia at age 67.

One year ago: The leaders of China and Taiwan met for the first time since the formerly bitter Cold War foes split amid civil war 66 years earlier; Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou (mah yeeng-joh) hailed the meeting in Singapore as a sign of a new stability in relations. The license plates that were on the limousine carrying President John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated in Dallas in 1963 were sold at auction for $100,000. Yitzhak Navon, 94, who was a top aide to Israel's founding father David Ben-Gurion and who served as Israel's president from 1978 to 1983, died in Jerusalem.

November 7 is........... Bittersweet Chocolate With Almonds Day

This intriguingly specific Day celebrates a particular combination of flavours – dark, bitter chocolate and toasted almonds. This is one of the oldest recipes involving chocolate known in the English-speaking world, featuring as the only chocolate dish in an 18th-century cookbook. The Day stands alongside Milk Chocolate with Almonds Day.

Dave, you got a preference for gun oil/cleaner?
Hoppes #9?
This is like opening Pandora's Box these days, there are a lot of good products availability.  Hopes #9 is still a good bore cleaner and probably very adequate.

I currently use:

M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner for the bore

https://www.amazon.com/M-Pro-Cleaner-8-Ounce-Spray-Bottle/dp/B00162PQTG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1478531844&sr=8-2&keywords=m+pro-7

Break Free CLP General Purpose Clean and Lube (Amazon r Walmart). Ballistol found at Amazon Link is also very good.

https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aclp%20gun%20cleaner

Lots of folks use Frog Lube these days also

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_89_11?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aclp+gun+cleaner%2Cp_89%3AFrog+Lube&keywords=clp+gun+cleaner&ie=UTF8&qid=1478532128&rnid=2528832011

Rem Oil Wipes for just a general wipe down protectant  (Walmart)

There are many other good choices just don't use WD40 or such on your guns.

Fixing to hopefully swap over to my new phone.
Maybe the new phone will have a camera upgrade so can take a decent picture on your next coffee run without the flash.  Just act like you're taking a selfie.
I really need to get down there and participate in one of these rack checks.  In the name of proper validation protocol and what not.
I think that would be as per protocol.  Need to confirm dates with CarolinaDave to make sure you don't make the trip on a day off.
That would be an epic disappointment, fight my way downtown and only see CarolinaDave.

Vaseline can be a cheap and effective preservative if you're going to put weapons in long-term storage. Just make sure to remove it thoroughly before using the gun. Stuff ignites - which is why I always carry vaseline-soaked cotton balls when backpacking. Stuff makes a great firestarter.

But then yesterday - the second anniversary of the injury - I had a little mishap with a ladder and thought I might have reinjured the leg. Doesn't appear so, but the leg lets me know every so often that it isn't happy with me.  And the whole thing gave me a touch of PTSD. Combination of panic and horror. I had to quit working on the house and have a cigar and a couple of drinks.

The study examined the 30 busiest airports in the nation, looking at factors such as timeliness, accessibility and amenities. LaGuardia Airport was ranked as the worst, followed by John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International.
Therefore, Newark's the best airport around! Awesome. We're on the same page.

I was on the Famous Auction site last week and got the itch to buy a few items.

$18.00   Arturo Fuente 858 5 Pack Candela 6x47
$13.00   Alec Bradley Connecticut Robusto 5 Pack 5x50
$14.00   Brick House Toro 5 Pack 6x52
$6.00   (2) Sucker Punch Lights Out 5x52
$10.50   (3) Perdomo Champagne Robusto 5x54

I've never tried a Candela, so I thought for $18 and Arturo Fuente, I didn't think that was too bad of a deal...  I also wanted a Connecticut, and Picked up the Alec Bradley for $13 which I thought was a good deal.  I couldn't pass up the Brick House...  I have tried a Sucker Punch in the past and liked it, so I picked up a couple of those and Perdomo Champagne's...

Wow, I'm sure glad I checked in on the banter this morning.  No telling what you will learn!  Morning fellas.  Raz, how did your return visit to the range go?
+1 on glad you checked in, Sly. Hope all is well. Another +1 on the interesting factoid about petroleum jelly. I guess that makes a lot of sense. Just never thought of it.
Works like a charm. Throw a spark at a Vaseline-soaked cotton ball and it lights right up and burns for several minutes, even in wet conditions.
I wonder if those (flaming) could be shot out of a tube?
If you've got the ability to shoot something from a tube, there are better ways to make fireballs.  Vaseline and cotton are for survival, not great as artillery.

Had to catch a little nap.
Dave, you got a preference for gun oil/cleaner?
Hoppes #9?
This is like opening Pandora's Box these days, there are a lot of good products availability.  Hopes #9 is still a good bore cleaner and probably very adequate.

I currently use:

M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner for the bore

https://www.amazon.com/M-Pro-Cleaner-8-Ounce-Spray-Bottle/dp/B00162PQTG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1478531844&sr=8-2&keywords=m+pro-7

Break Free CLP General Purpose Clean and Lube (Amazon r Walmart). Ballistol found at Amazon Link is also very good.

https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aclp%20gun%20cleaner

Lots of folks use Frog Lube these days also

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_89_11?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aclp+gun+cleaner%2Cp_89%3AFrog+Lube&keywords=clp+gun+cleaner&ie=UTF8&qid=1478532128&rnid=2528832011

Rem Oil Wipes for just a general wipe down protectant  (Walmart)

There are many other good choices just don't use WD40 or such on your guns.

so I take it Virgin Olive Oil is out too?
thanks Dave.
As is KY and Vasoline

G'morning West Coast Clemson Dave!  Was wondering on Saturday what the uniforms would look like when Clemson played Syracuse.  Wonder if it confused any of the players (orange on orange).
Always wear purple for Military Appreciation Day.  As for Syracuse....ugly uniforms...I think they've forgotten they're supposed to be orange.   Even their fans hate these uniforms.

Yay (applause)!
So in other words, a win!

Last week on a nice day, my wife, me and a friend was sitting in our back yard.  Suddenly a flock of birds, about 15, all black, with a wing span of would 3 foot, passed over my house.  They turned and went about 3 houses down and started to circle like vultures...  I said, "Look at that, they look like small eagles."  One bird broke off of the circle and flew down to us, and circled over us.  I'm guessing they were about maybe 75 to 100 yards above us.  So we could see they were black and looked like birds but that was about it.  Then the one that was circling us, few back to the others and they all few south about 1/4 mile, and started the circle pattern again.  I said, "look at those birds, none of them are flapping their wings...!!!"  We all watched them, and again, none of them flapped their wings.  While they were near us, I ran inside and got my phone to try and take their pictures, but as soon as I stepped out, they flew off.  It was very, very, weird...!  Ok, back outside for more work, and watching for birds..!

That is scary as heck, BD.  I would have freaked out.  Just recently I was derisively thinking of those systems going towards self driving cars ... I prefer to retain the abilities & senses I have acquired from years of driving ... but that is a good example of the feature going beyond your own abilities that saved a life (how can you stop in time if you never even see the kid?!!!). That's a good example of how those sensors and systems can extend your abilities and save a life ... my mind is changed.

See you guys later. Two friends went last night to a Trump rally in Leesburg, VA (30-40 miles west) It was supposed to start at 9:30pm, but he was in Pittsburgh and didn't get there until 12midnight (really 1am).  He spoke for two hours.  They said his speech is available on his website. 10,000 people showed up, but there was only room for a few thousand.  I imagine they had speakers for the overflow.  Local media didn't cover it.  Not a mention on the midday local news.

Gotcha.

Made money on my second real estate deal today, and it happens I've run across a couple of Winchester Model 70's in .270wsm. If the sellers are remotely honest and reasonable, one of them will sell me a rifle.

Meanwhile, my next deal is a hard-money loan, which I have to write up tonight while watching Monday Night Football. So, now I'm a small-time capitalist pig in a commie state.

in true working Communism if there ever was a thing is the fact that everyone shares equally, but, there's always corruption.

It's not corruption. To call it corruption is to pretend humans are actually civilized, of which I see no evidence. It's just plain, old-fashioned survival of the fittest. Those with the moxie to take what they want and the brains to hold on to it hire themselves standing armies to keep them rich. You can call those armies soldiers or employees or the labor force or allies or customers or whatever you wish. But they do the bidding and serve the interests of the ones with the money, and they pay for the privilege.

Me, I'm just trying to sneak around and make enough to retire on without getting noticed. If they notice me too much, they'll make me pay more tribute.

sheriffs have a private range on the property, 139 acres I think and I have a friend that lives on the property that can get me on the range. in the summer they take in inner city kids for 3 weeks learning life skills and fun.

As per Animal Farm, all are created equal, except that some are more equal than others....
