Besides Halloween Today, October 31 is........ Caramel Apple Day
The autumn air is crisp, the smell of fallen leaves wafts on breezes that bring showers of their fellows from the trees they caress. On every home we find the strands of fake spider-webs, ghouls and goblins in the bushes, and the bounties of the last harvest displayed as sheaves of corn and grinning Jack’o’Lanterns.
History of Caramel Apple Day
Caramel Apple Day is one of a collection of Candy themed holidays sponsored by the National Confectioner’s Association. Caramel apples have a long and tasty history of being created from some of the seasons favorite treats. Granny Smith’s are by far the most popular apple used in these confections, the tart-tangy flavor playing an amazing counterpart to the sweetness of the caramel. The grainy-texture and sweeter flavors of other apples just don’t quite bring the flavor palette together.

Today is Monday, Oct. 31, the 305th day of 2016. There are 61 days left in the year. This is Halloween.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Oct. 31, 1926, magician Harry Houdini died in Detroit of peritonitis resulting from a ruptured appendix.
On this date:
In 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Palace church, marking the start of the Protestant Reformation in Germany.
In 1795, English poet John Keats was born in London.
In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state as President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation.
In 1941, the Navy destroyer USS Reuben James was torpedoed by a German U-boat off Iceland with the loss of some 100 lives, even though the United States had not yet entered World War II. Work was completed on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, begun in 1927.
In 1956, Navy Rear Adm. George J. Dufek and six others became the first air travelers to set foot at the South Pole.
In 1961, the body of Josef Stalin was removed from Lenin's Tomb as part of the Soviet Union's "de-Stalinization" drive.
In 1964, Theodore C. Freeman, 34, became the first member of NASA's astronaut corps to die when his T-38 jet crashed while approaching Ellington Air Force Base in Houston.
In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered a halt to all U.S. bombing of North Vietnam, saying he hoped for fruitful peace negotiations.
In 1984, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh (seek) security guards.
In 1994, a Chicago-bound American Eagle ATR-72 crashed in northern Indiana, killing all 68 people aboard.
In 1996, a Brazilian Fokker-100 jetliner crashed in Sao Paulo, killing all 96 people on board and three on the ground.
In 1999, EgyptAir Flight 990, bound from New York to Cairo, crashed off the Massachusetts coast, killing all 217 people aboard.
Ten years ago: A fire at a residential hotel in Reno, Nev., killed 12 people. (A hotel resident who set the fire was sentenced to 12 consecutive life terms.) Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki (NOO'-ree ahl-MAHL'-ih-kee) ordered the lifting of joint U.S.-Iraqi military checkpoints around the Shiite militant stronghold of Sadr City and other parts of Baghdad. P.W. Botha, South Africa's apartheid-era president, died on the southern Cape coast at age 90.
Five years ago: Palestinians won their greatest international endorsement yet with full membership in UNESCO, but the move prompted the U.S. to cut off payments to the Paris-based cultural agency. The United Nations estimated that the world's population had surpassed 7 billion.
One year ago: A Russian passenger airliner crashed in a remote part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula 23 minutes after taking off from a popular Red Sea resort, killing all 224 people on board. Four people were killed, including the gunman, following a shooting rampage in Colorado Springs that ended in a gunbattle between police and the shooter. The Kansas City Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and beat the New York Mets 5-3 for a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

@ Bean - any cheapo carpet buying suggestions around here?

Haven't shopped for carpeting in a long time, so no idea. I suspect you can do much better than the big box stores, though.

Good morning, gents. Who's spreading the rumor that I like Mondays? It ain't true.
Been up since 4:30 helping out a buddy at his local Buddhist temple. I could use all the good karma I can get my hands on.
-
Warden's report on Chip and Joanna's Magnolia Store
- Not much furniture, mostly the décor type stuff Joanna places all over the houses (and then takes it back after the show ends)
- They went pretty early and no line but 30-45 minute line to get in the store when she left. Fire Department enforces the occupancy limit. Saturday lines are sometimes 1-2 hours waiting to get in.
- Prices were astronomical
- Checkout line was 50-60 people long so takes about an hour to check out. She was told it was double that on Saturdays.
- Got an entire section for non-decorator items like t-shirts, hats, show videos, koozees and other junk.
- She did not spend a penny!
Summary - People are so stupid!

A record number of illegal aliens have crossed the U.S.- Mexico border and are in U.S. Border Patrol custody in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV), according to the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC). Border Patrol Agent and NBPC President Brandon Judd spoke exclusively with Breitbart Texas and condemned the leadership of the Border Patrol’s parent agency, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), for allegedly “keeping this information secret” ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Howdy, Tex. Bad thing about having a bunch of money in the bank is the temptation to buy every gun I ever wanted. Found myself looking too long and lustfully at an ad for a Glock 20 over the weekend. I resisted the temptation, but damn.

Shush. I just bought a Model 29 that's in for gunsmithing, a Ruger American All Weather in 30-06, and a Leupold VXi-3 3.5-10x40mm. And I'm plotting out an AR build. No more guns until I make some more money.

Had to take my U-verse equipment to the UPS Store for return, must say AT&T has set up a pretty good program for that, now if only they could hire some decent installers. Just haul it to any UPS Store and they will give you a receipt for it then pack and ship it.

In the extra sub compact carry world the 9 mm Shield is a solid choice. Ruger offers some nice carry stuff at reasonable prices also. I will forewarn you that with your arthritis you need to consider that the .40 S&W offers quite a bit of recoil even in just a compact piece. Personally in the sub compact world I carry a Springfield XD-S .45 with 3.3" barrel.

Tex meant to say, "...the .40 S&W offers quite a bit of recoil ESPECIALLY in a compact piece." If you've got arthritis, I wouldn't go near the .40 in a small gun.

Not what I meant to say but definitely what I should have said! .40 recoil is worse than a .45 ACP most of the time.

Howdy, Tex. Bad thing about having a bunch of money in the bank is the temptation to buy every gun I ever wanted. Found myself looking too long and lustfully at an ad for a Glock 20 over the weekend. I resisted the temptation, but damn.
Go for it!
Shush. I just bought a Model 29 that's in for gunsmithing, a Ruger American All Weather in 30-06, and a Leupold VXi-3 3.5-10x40mm. And I'm plotting out an AR build. No more guns until I make some more money.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the furniture line (and paint line) are being distributed by other companies. Just with the Gains/Magnolia branding.

Sounds like an expertly timed "leak" to me.

When a compact is proper (usually winter time with heavier clothing on) I carry a Glock 33 with a G 32 magazine or a Glock 30S with a G21 magazine.
Edit - When full size is appropriate (and it seldom is) I carry a G20SF or a S&W .44 mag mountain gun.

Not bad, she has lost two jobs in about 2 months but that is ok she is doing it for the Clinton's.
"We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor," Pratapas said, adding that the network had severed ties with her on October 14.
