Now this one is for Tony!

October 14 is … Be Bald and Free Day and National Dessert Day

Toupee’s, Wigs, long hair in the front and bald on top, the issue of the balding head has been creating all sorts of ‘solutions’ for generations. But why does there need to be a solution? Why can there not be a Bald And Free Day to celebrate the chrome-dome, the cue-ball, the beautifully shaved scalp revealed in all its glory? Take heart! For such a day does truly exist, and it is, appropriately enough, Bald And Free Day, and it’s a day to toss aside all your head coverings and let the scalp breathe!

History of Be Bald And Free Day
Be Bald And Free Day is a celebration of the bald pate and the strength of the men and women who have dared to bare it all. Don’t think that being bald has always been a sign of weakness, after all when was the last time you thought of Bruce Willis or Sean Connery as ‘weak’. Instead these men are bald and yet symbols of virility. They’re part of a grand history as well, including such notable bald men as Mahatma Ghandi, the man who help to kick the British out of India without resorting to any form of violence.

How about Mikhail Gorbachev? The Russian leader who helped bring down the Berlin Wall, the Soviet Union, and put an end to the cold war. You better believe he rocked his bald pate to help change the world at large, in part by criticizing another man of equally hairless scalp, Vladimir Putin. Then there’s theman who arguably changed all of science with the concept of evolution, Charles Darwin. Correct, another man that utterly changed the world while baring his scalp to the world.

But baldness isn’t a powerful thing simply for women, take a look at Sinead O’Connor and Britney Spears, a pair that some would consider it blasphemous to speak in the same breath. Sinead wore her hair as a rebellion against those who wanted her to take on a softer, more sexualized look to help further her career. Instead she went bald and severe to break the male fantasy of the music industry. Britney, in her greatest time of trial and tribulation, shaved her head in part as a way to reclaim herself from the musical machine. Powerful women indeed!

Today is Friday, Oct. 14, the 288th day of 2016. There are 78 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Oct. 14, 1066, Normans under William the Conqueror defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings.

On this date:

In 1890, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States, was born in Denison, Texas.

In 1912, former President Theodore Roosevelt, campaigning for the White House as the Progressive ("Bull Moose") candidate, went ahead with a speech in Milwaukee after being shot in the chest by New York saloonkeeper John Schrank, declaring, "It takes more than one bullet to kill a bull moose."

In 1926, "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A.A. Milne was first published by Methuen & Co. of London.

In 1939, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the HMS Royal Oak, a British battleship anchored at Scapa Flow in Scotland's Orkney Islands; 833 of the more than 1,200 men aboard were killed.

In 1944, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel committed suicide rather than face trial and certain execution for allegedly conspiring against Adolf Hitler.

In 1947, Air Force test pilot Charles E. ("Chuck") Yeager (YAY'-gur) broke the sound barrier as he flew the experimental Bell XS-1 (later X-1) rocket plane over Muroc Dry Lake in California.

In 1960, Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy suggested the idea of a Peace Corps while addressing an audience of students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In 1964, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev was toppled from power; he was succeeded by Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary and by Alexei Kosygin as Premier.

In 1977, singer Bing Crosby died outside Madrid, Spain, at age 74.

In 1986, Holocaust survivor and human rights advocate Elie Wiesel (EL'-ee vee-ZEHL') was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The International Olympic Committee decided to separate the years of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games beginning in 1994.

In 1987, a 58-hour drama began in Midland, Texas, as 18-month-old Jessica McClure slid 22 feet down an abandoned well at a private day care center; she was rescued on Oct. 16.

In 1996, Madonna and her boyfriend, Carlos Leon, became parents as the pop star gave birth to a girl, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon. The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 6,000 for the first time, ending the day at 6,010.00.

Ten years ago: The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to impose punishing sanctions on North Korea for carrying out a nuclear test. The Detroit Tigers swept the American League championship with a 6-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics. A sideline-clearing brawl interrupted the third quarter of Miami's 35-0 victory over Florida International. Gerry (GEH'-ree) Studds, the first openly gay member of Congress, died in Boston at age 69; singer Freddy Fender died in Corpus Christi, Texas, at age 69.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama cast himself as a savior of the U.S. auto industry as he stood in a once-shuttered Michigan assembly plant with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to boast of a new trade deal and the auto bailout he'd pushed through Congress. The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 to take a 3-2 lead in the NL championship series. In Tokyo, Japan's Kohei Uchimura (koo-hay oo-chee-mur-uh) gave the home fans what they wanted, becoming the first man to win three titles at the world gymnastics championships.

One year ago: Hundreds of soldiers fanned out in cities across Israel and authorities erected concrete barriers outside some Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem in a stepped-up effort to counter a monthlong wave of Palestinian violence. The state of Texas executed Licho Escamilla (LEE'-cho es-kuh-MEE'-uh) for the fatal 2001 shooting of Christopher Kevin James, a Dallas police officer who was trying to break up a brawl involving Escamilla.

GFY.  I didn't say "great", or even "good".
However, it is a good price.  One has to do some coupon code manipulations to do much better.

@Tex, did you receive the Tat sampler from Famous? If so, what were the contents?
Yes I did but did not check the contents beyond making sure there were 10 in each pak.  Think they might be wrong?
Yes, huge difference. In the picture they show at left a Tat Series P, which would fit with the pricing. The description however lists a Reserva SW churchill which by itself is a $12-13 cigar
I will dig around and check them.
Those were not up earlier this morning but I am pretty sure there was not a 7" long cigar in there.

Guy in Montana repeatedly has sex with his 12-year-old daughter, mom walks in on them having sex, guy gets arrested and then gets a 30-year suspended sentence and does 60 days in jail.  Everyone says he's a great father who made a mistake.

Uh-huh.

No.
Good time to bring back stoning.

I smoked the Diesel Rage Shorty. Nice cigar. RG a little too big for my liking. It was smooth, even the retrohale. Lots of smoke production, subtle chocolate and espresso notes, and quite a bit of Vitamin N. Despite how strong it is and I usually don't go for that, I'd buy these.

It was part of what they gave at CF this year. Otherwise it wouldn't have been the vitola I would have purchased. I'm definitely interested in buying 5 or 10 of a different size.

Gun-buying lull. When no one was looking I braved the weather and snuck out to buy a 1978 Smith & Wesson Model .29-2. Gorgeous shape. With box. $850. Not bad a'tall.

Yeah...but most of my ex-girlfriends said it, too.  So, there's something of a consensus.

Yeah, almost makes me think I shouldn't take it to Montana with me. Almost.

But I got no use for safe-queens.  I'll just keep it well oiled.

Well, in Milius' script, it was supposed to be 4" and nickle-plated. But when they made the movie, the 29 was out of production due to lack of demand, and they couldn't find any 4". So, depending on what story you believe, they either got two 6.5" models or a 6.5" and an 8.75".  I believe the latter, because a friend of mine who's a filmmaker showed me how camera angles can make the 6.5" barrel look like a snub. So they used the long barrel for certain shots to preserve the illusion of size and menace.

But no, not a 12" barrel. Harry's gun might have been 12", but not the barrel of his pistol.

Well, made it home. So far it isn't remotely "historic." Just a buncha rain. But there isn't a generator to be bought in 100 miles.

Lotsa pansies up here.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.
