I will save you a Google search.

Long ago, in 1878, the first telephone operator started working for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company. What image do you have in your mind when you think of a phone operator? Clean white blouse, sensible ankle length skirt, and a friendly female voice? You may be surprised that the first operator was a man, in fact all of the first ones were. But their reign wasn’t to last, in September of 1878 Emma M Nutt became the first female phone operator, and from that point forward it’s been a woman’s industry. Emma M Nutt Day celebrates this pioneer and all she and her fellow operators have done for communication since!

History of Emma M Nutt Day
As mentioned above, the first operators were all boys, and while we’re not huge fans of the phrase ‘boys will be boys’ in modern parlance, it was definitely something that was well believed back in the early days of telephone. Boys who were put in the position of telephone operators exhibited a basic lack of patience, and behaviors that included pranks and cussing, which just wouldn’t do for the people who were supposed to be the friendly voice of a telephone operator.

So it was that Emma M Nutt came to join the New England Telephone Company, and whose cultured, gentle voice set the standard for what an operator was supposed to sound like. She was a true rock star at what she did too, working a 54-hour week at a rate of $10 a month and memorizing every number in the New England Telephone Company directory. She then went on to work for the company for between 33 and 37 years, ultimately retiring. For a few years she even worked alongside her sister Stella Nutt, creating the first sister pair of operators in history too!

And also today is (just for Dean)

Happy Building and Code Staff Appreciation Day!

If this is your field, then chances are you don’t feel the love every day, so live it up! Celebrate with a department lunch (that way you know you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people) or perhaps wear a smiley badge on all inspections you conduct today. If you don’t work in Building and Code, then today’s an opportunity to show your appreciation to those often overlooked people who ensure your building safety. Consider sending a box of chocolates and a note of thanks to the company or individual who performed your inspection to show you value their work, or at the very least, don’t be grumpy with your inspector today.

Since the origin of Building & Code Staff Day is unclear, it may well be a cry for recognition from within the industry itself – all the more reason to show your support!

Tropical Storm Hermine is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to make landfall Thursday night along the Florida panhandle as a Category 1 hurricane. Hermine will bring heavy rain, storm surge flooding, high winds and even some tornadoes to not only Florida, but also the coastal Southeast.

Hermine could also go on to impact parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions. For more details on what may happen in those regions, see this link.

A hurricane warning was issued Wednesday night along the Florida panhandle, from the Suwannee River to Mexico Beach, as the latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast calls for Hermine to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane prior to landfall. This warning area includes Tallahassee.

Storm has already waterlogged much of Florida.  Nowhere for more rain to go.

In 1715, following a reign of 72 years, King Louis XIV of France died four days before his 77th birthday.

In 1807, former Vice President Aaron Burr was found not guilty of treason. (Burr was then tried on a misdemeanor charge, but was again acquitted.)

In 1905, Alberta and Saskatchewan entered Confederation as the eighth and ninth provinces of Canada.

In 1914, the last passenger pigeon in captivity, "Martha," died at the Cincinnati Zoo.

In 1923, the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Yokohama were devastated by an earthquake that claimed some 140,000 lives.

In 1941, the first municipally owned parking building in the United States opened in Welch, West Virginia.

In 1945, Americans received word of Japan's formal surrender that ended World War II. (Because of the time difference, it was Sept. 2 in Tokyo Bay, where the ceremony took place.)

In 1951, the United States, Australia and New Zealand signed a mutual defense pact, the ANZUS treaty.

In 1969, a coup in Libya brought Moammar Gadhafi to power.

In 1976, U.S. Rep. Wayne L. Hays, D-Ohio, resigned in the wake of a scandal in which he admitted having an affair with "secretary" Elizabeth Ray.

In 1983, 269 people were killed when a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 was shot down by a Soviet jet fighter after the airliner entered Soviet airspace.

In 1995, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. (The hall opened to the public the next day.)

Ten years ago: Mexican President Vicente (vih-SEN'-tay) Fox was forced to forego delivering his final state-of-the-nation address in person after leftist lawmakers stormed the stage of Congress to protest disputed July elections; Fox instead gave his speech on television. An Iranian passenger plane caught fire on landing in Mashhad, killing 28 of the 148 people on board. Nellie Connally, the former Texas first lady who was riding in President John F. Kennedy's limousine when he was assassinated, died in Austin, Texas, at age 87.

Five years ago: In a fiery broadcast from hiding, Libya's Moammar Gadhafi warned that loyalist tribes in his main strongholds were armed and preparing for battle. Leaders and envoys from 60 countries and the U.N. met in Paris for talks with Libya's rebel-led National Transitional Council to map the country's future.

One year ago: President Barack Obama stared down a melting glacier in Alaska in a dramatic use of his presidential pulpit to sound the alarm on climate change. Invoking "God's authority," Rowan County, Kentucky, Clerk Kim Davis denied marriage licenses to gay couples again in direct defiance of the federal courts, and vowed not to resign, even under the pressure of steep fines or jail. Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz (GLIHN'-uh-wihts), a police officer for Fox Lake, Illinois, was found shot to death after reporting he was pursuing a group of men; authorities eventually concluded that Gliniewicz's death was a suicide. Actor Dean Jones, 84, died in Los Angeles.

Yeah, clicking through is the easy part. It's the test at the end that sucks. You have to get so many right, if you don't, you have to take it all over. I just keep track of the answers as I'm going so I don't have to actually think. Lol

And there are typically some quizzes interspersed to make sure you're reading the material.  Should be easy in your case today, though.  "What should you do when an armed intruder enters your gun free zone?  A) schitt your pants. B) Mutter FML for working in a fk'n gun free zone, or C) Draw the compact 9 mm you carry regardless and shoot the mofo before he shoots you.

Sad news for the day:

I had a note from Chip last night and OMG things have managed to go further downhill.  He is virtually the only member of his family that did not have water up in this house but that is the closest thing to a bright light.

His wife fell while they were assisting others with flooding and broke her arm.  Then she had a gallbladder issue which resulted in significant damage to her pancreas.  The good part of that is I know from experience with my Mother you can live fine with only a small portion of your pancreas while without it you can't live at all.  She has about 25% of her pancreas and there were additional issues with other organs.  Here is the summary he provided:  "We have a full week in the hospital now and no word on if she will recover in a couple of weeks or month."  Meanwhile there is no one to assist caring for his daughter who still requires assistance.

Here is Chip's closing:

"I haven't given up on the banter but it seems we keep getting obstacles thrown in our direction that are hard to overcome.
Keep us in your thoughts and prayers and you can share this with the guys"

When the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced its intention to regulate a variety of tobacco products, including cigars, it issued a variety of documents highlighted by a 499-page read explaining the new rules and its intentions. Despite the literal pounds of paper released in May, the agency acknowledged that there were gray areas and that in some cases, it was still deciding exactly how to regulate these products. In some of the more complex parts of the rule, FDA said it would issue guidance at a later date. Yesterday came word that guidance would be issued on at least one major topic: warning labels and advertising. As part of the new regulations, oftentimes described as the deeming regulations, the packaging cigars come in—boxes and bundles—along with advertising will be subject to warning labels. Draft guidance is non-binding and is said to describe the agency’s current thinking. In short, FDA could change its mind and introduce binding rules that are less or more restrictive than those published today. FDA is asking for comments from the public on the guidance document, with the submission for comments window open for the next 30 days.

OK, so not the best of match up's tonight, but College football is back!

THURSDAY KICKOFF

Appalachian State (plus 20) at No. 9 Tennessee

Charlotte (plus 40) at No. 19 Louisville
You forgot the COCKS, SHEESH!!  Sheesh, the first SEC Matchup of the year and a great opportunity to enjoy some grilled wings while watching the chickens get roasted.
SC vs Vanderbilt @ 7:00 Central with Vanderbilt a 4 pt favorite (home field advantage I guess)
Big difference between forgetting and ignoring the irrelevant.
So Charlotte vs Louisville with a 40 point spread is relevant?
Define relevant.
That would be your job since you ignored the "irrelevant" by your definition.

Good morning to all. Thought I'd let you soak in that last post while I took care of some morning dooties.

Important work for me to do today, have to take "No Fear" online training today so I will no how to hide when someone starts shooting at me in this gun free zone.
I've got continuing ed training sporadically over the next week or so. One of the severe downfalls of being licensed. 3 hours of it today to start.
At least it will only take about 15-20 minutes to learn about hiding!  Used to could just go to the end and mark it done but now you have to click on each slide and wait  some time to click on the next one.
I chose D) throw the huge dildo I brought at him.
CNS.  And there's the Gurkha knife as back-up.

God Bless.  Giving Job a run for his money.
Indeed.

Yeah, clicking through is the easy part. It's the test at the end that sucks. You have to get so many right, if you don't, you have to take it all over. I just keep track of the answers as I'm going so I don't have to actually think. Lol
We only have to redo the questions we got wrong....with the help of a tutorial prompt that basically gives the answer.
That would be nice. We have to do the whole thing over again. And the site is slow as shit on the tests, that part takes forever.
And it's so irrelevant. Today I'm learning about commercial auto insurance (which I don't do) and ethics (which I barely have).

A "friend in deed" gave me the answer keys for the regular annual tests a couple of years ago and the questions never change except they put them in different order each year - so you can't cheat!  What a damn joke.

Ethics is so important to us we have to have 1 hour of in person training for that every year.  That training has sure been a total failure.

At least it will only take about 15-20 minutes to learn about hiding!  Used to could just go to the end and mark it done but now you have to click on each slide and wait  some time to click on the next one.
CNS
A "friend in deed" gave me the answer keys for the regular annual tests a couple of years ago and the questions never change except they put them in different order each year - so you can't cheat!  What a damn joke.

Ethics is so important to us we have to have 1 hour of in person training for that every year.  That training has sure been a total failure.
Same here, but at least the stories about the ethics violations which are uncovered are interesting.  Plus the one I attend is at County Line BBQ, which helps take the edge off as well.
I would happily do training if it was accompanied by BBQ and a couple of pitchers of beer.
+1

All you need to know when someone is shooting at you!  What a crock of Shit this is!

• Based on studies conducted, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) advises us that we
typically only have three options in responding to an Active Shooter situation:

– RUN! This option can be implemented if you have the ability or capability to escape or evacuate a
location

– HIDE! This option can be implemented if you have the ability or capability to conceal yourself

– FIGHT! This option is a last resort option and means that you have no choice but to defend
yourself with whatever means or actions you have the ability or capability to perform against an
active shooter to avoid harm

If your hiding place is in an office or other secure location with a door:

Turn off the lights

You want the appearance that no one is there

I'm sure that's what most postal workers think too. Speaking of which, we haven't heard of any such events lately. Must be due to the improved training they're offering their employees at the USPS.

Camo ‘n Cream Ice Cream: New flavor from Blue Bell inspired by camouflage trend

BRENHAM, Texas – The newest flavor from Blue Bell won’t be hard to spot on your next trip to the grocery store. Or will it?

Camo ‘n Cream Ice Cream, packaged in a unique carton decorated in a camouflage design created from the Blue Bell cow and girl logo, arrives in stores Thursday.

Camo ‘n Cream is a colorful combination of three great tasting ice cream flavors- Pistachio Almond, Milk Chocolate and cream cheese – swirled together in a camouflage pattern.
Sounds delicious.

The Levy County Emergency Management Office is ordering a MANDATORY evacuation of all coastal communities along the Gulf Coast and the Suwannee River of Levy County.

The National Weather Service is predicting dangerous, possibility life threating storm surge late Thursday into Friday. Storm surge potentially 3 feet higher than experienced during Tropical Storm Colin or 8 feet mean sea level (MSL) is expected. That does not include any effects of rainfall and wave action. Citizens along the Gulf Coast and Suwannee River are strongly recommended to evacuate to a safe location out of the storm surge area.

Citizens that live in a storm surge area should take immediate precautions to protect themselves and their families. When sustained wind speeds reach 40 mph emergency responders are unable to assist. This means if you are calling 911, we will NOT be able to respond until the winds subside. Flooded roadways may be impassable and high winds may prohibit emergency vehicles from accessing the area.

Due to strict conflict of interest laws here in NYC, you can't take them to lunch,
or give them presents(can we say bribes, boys & girls).
In Florida, I hear you can get them restraining orders though!  8)

Looks like there was an explosion at the SpaceX launchpad.
That is strange, they usually get off the ground then explode.
Wasn't even launching today, just sitting there.
Supposed to launch this afternoon.  I don't know how anyone can work around one of those things.  Would give me the heebie-jeebies.
Thought I read Saturday was the next scheduled launch.

And agreed, prefer the lack of possible death while I'm at work.
I'm sure that's what most postal workers think too. Speaking of which, we haven't heard of any such events lately. Must be due to the improved training they're offering their employees at the USPS.
No we are weeding out the nuts in the post offices, they are showing up earlier during
the education phase in schools....  :'(

I saw a "Hillary for President" store while ago down in South Austin on the Mexican side of the Interstate.
Don't worry, a little more than 2 months before it becomes reality. You won't have to wait much longer. ;)
Remember those beautiful pictures I was posting last summer from the Cayman Islands?   I remember how to get there and my retirement checks can be deposited in the banks there  just as easily as here.
Sounds like a win/win to me! ;)

NASA says SpaceX was conducting a test firing of its unmanned rocket when the blast occurred Thursday morning.  The Israeli made Amos-6 satellite (pictured) was carrying technology to allow Facebook to provide wireless internet directly to smartphones in sub-Saharan Africa
Gotta have your Facebook no matter where you are.  Sheesh!

Not committing to anything(except maybe a boat) until after this election - if there even is one.  That 10 days last summer served as my exploratory trip.  Got the Real Estate Agents card in my wallet along with the builders card.

Can't expatriate to Cayman, have to remain a U.S. Citizen and return once every year.  Unlike America they have immigration laws that still apply to everyone.

Even m0re heartless, you have to prove that you have sufficient income to live on if you want to stay over 30 days.  If you don't plan to stay over 30 days then you have to prove you have a return flight.
