Today is Thursday, Aug. 11, the 224th day of 2016. There are 142 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Aug. 11, 1956, abstract painter Jackson Pollock, 44, died in an automobile accident on Long Island, New York.
On this date:
In 1860, the nation's first successful silver mill began operation near Virginia City, Nevada.
In 1909, the steamship SS Arapahoe became the first ship in North America to issue an S.O.S. distress signal, off North Carolina's Cape Hatteras.
In 1934, the first federal prisoners arrived at Alcatraz Island (a former military prison) in San Francisco Bay.
In 1942, during World War II, Pierre Laval, prime minister of Vichy France, publicly declared that "the hour of liberation for France is the hour when Germany wins the war."
In 1954, a formal peace took hold in Indochina, ending more than seven years of fighting between the French and Communist Viet Minh.
In 1962, Andrian Nikolayev became the Soviet Union's third cosmonaut in space as he was launched on a 94-hour flight.
In 1965, rioting and looting that claimed 34 lives broke out in the predominantly black Watts section of Los Angeles.
In 1975, the United States vetoed the proposed admission of North and South Vietnam to the United Nations, following the Security Council's refusal to consider South Korea's application.
In 1984, during a voice test for a paid political radio address, President Ronald Reagan joked that he had "signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
In 1991, Shiite (SHEE'-eyet) Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon released two Western captives: Edward Tracy, an American held nearly five years, and Jerome Leyraud, a Frenchman who'd been abducted by a rival group three days earlier.
In 1997, President Bill Clinton made the first use of the historic line-item veto, rejecting three items in spending and tax bills. (However, the U.S. Supreme Court later struck down the veto as unconstitutional.)
In 2014, Academy Award-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams, 63, died in Tiburon, California, a suicide.
Ten years ago: The U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah. TV talk show host Mike Douglas died in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on his 81st birthday.
Five years ago: Minnesota rivals Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann sparred bitterly during an eight-candidate Republican debate in Ames, Iowa; Mitt Romney sought to stay above the fray as he focused on President Barack Obama, saying, "Our president simply doesn't understand how to lead and how to grow the economy."
One year ago: Federal authorities charged that an international web of hackers and traders had made $100 million on Wall Street by stealing a look at corporate press releases before they went out and then trading on that information ahead of the pack. China rattled global financial markets by devaluing its currency in an effort in part to revive economic growth. New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith suffered a broken jaw after being punched by teammate IK Enemkpali (EYE-KAY eh-nehm-PAH'-lee) in the locker room. (Enemkpali was released and claimed off waivers by Buffalo a day later.)

Good morning, blokes.
Well I will save others from having to look up Bloated Tony's word of the day:
From the Urban Dictionary: "You stupid americans are all wrong". Bloke is simply a British slang term for 'man/guy', with perhaps slight connotations of masculinity, and used only in an informal setting. Unlike 'guy' it is not normally used vocatively, as in 'hey you blokes'.

My performance plan states stogie smoking may occur when there are not people in and out of my office. The exhaust fan set up requires the door to remain 93.76% closed. So the place has to be fairly deserted before I can fire up. Maybe there's a ladder of opportunity there.

I have done that for about the last 10 days because it is too hot to smoke any other way with temps over 100 every day. For what little it is worth supposed to cool down a bit with some rain this weekend but I don't have a lot of hope for that being reality.
-
Morning Mr. Raz.
Morning MotoRaz.
Morning, TD and Bean. Just ordered another grand worth of parts for the bike. Mostly a new exhaust system.

Lot of good a "theft proof " radio does in a vehicle when this is what is left after they try to steal it. Happened to the Land Cruise one night back when my son was driving it at college and he just ran across the picture.

This is just unfuk'nbelievable! (Bean's school district but mine probably does it too being as they have only lost about 5 games in the last 6 or 7 years.
ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — A change is coming to high school transcripts in the Round Rock Independent School District.
Starting this school year, the administration has decided to eliminate “D” from its letter grading scale.
Current grading scale New grading scale
A 90-100 A 90-100
B 80-89 B 80-89
C 75-79 C 70-79
D 70-74 F Below 70
F Below 70 Source: RRISD
A grade in the low 70s will no longer be classified as a “D.” The student will now get a “C” which represents all grades in the 70s. Any grade below 70 is still an “F.”
A student’s grade point average and class rank will still be calculated the same.
The district says it decided to make the change to help student-athletes and match a “common practice” of schools and districts around the country.
The NCAA uses the letter grades to calculate eligibility and scholarships

After all, it's all about equality. It's just that athletes need to be more equal.
Just think about all that money that will be redistributed when they sign with the NFL, get millions of dollars, spend it on hookers and blow, and end up living in a dumpster.

"help student-athletes". yeah, right. One reason families prefer Round Rock over Austin is the superior public schools. Looks like we're dumbing it down just like everywhere else.

"help student-athletes". yeah, right. One reason families prefer Round Rock over Austin is the superior public schools. Looks like we're dumbing it down just like everywhere else.
Then again, I find the original grading a bit unusual. I always considered 70-79 C and 60-69 D. When did they make the C's so limited?

Afternoon Steve.

Seems the scale is shifting the other way. A 92 was still a B here way back when...
Used to be 93-100 A, 85-92 B, 78-84 C, 70-77 D. The plus and minus system added further refinement to the letter grade. Guess that worked too well.

I gave up trying to figure it out when they added AP and Honors courses that they give extra weight to, so instead of an A being a 4.0, AP A's were 5.0 or something like that....new math!

Why I went to the University of Rochester, in the mid 70's they graded on a standard bell curve. for every A they gave out a d, for every B a C. here's how it would work, lets say everyone in class had grades from 97 to 84. depending upon the distribution of the grades, it went like this, 97-95 an A, 96 to 90 a B 89 to 86 a C, 85 to 84 a D. not exactly a fair system, wished I had known that before attending. grades that would put you close to dean's list at other colleges, could have you on academic probation.

Morning Flip
last we spoke you were getting into the pool with a cigar, not too
hot last night was it?
I have done that for about the last 10 days because it is too hot to smoke any other way with temps over 100 every day. For what little it is worth supposed to cool down a bit with some rain this weekend but I don't have a lot of hope for that being reality.
And we have another heat wave rolling in here. Potential for Tstorms as well.
LOL, 98 degrees with a feels like 112 here right now.

My son went to high school in the RR District when we lived here before and it was a straight 10 point scale then, it was also a really top school district then too.

Went to have me some Uncle Julio's Mexican Food for lunch as I do once every couple of months and it took so long to get my food (around 35 minutes) they gave me my lunch free. Place is usually not all that busy at lunch but it was full-up today, must be a big convention in town as it is only a block from the convention center and a lot of them were obviously conference lizards.
