Today is Friday, Aug. 5, the 218th day of 2016. There are 148 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Aug. 5, 1966, the Beatles' "Revolver" album was released in the United Kingdom on the Parlophone label; it was released in the United States three days later by Capitol Records. (Songs included "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yellow Submarine," which were also issued as a double A-side single on Aug. 5 and 8.)

On this date:

In 1864, during the Civil War, Union Adm. David G. Farragut led his fleet to victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama.

In 1884, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty's pedestal was laid on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor.

In 1924, the comic strip "Little Orphan Annie" by Harold Gray made its debut.

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the National Labor Board, which was later replaced with the National Labor Relations Board.

In 1936, Jesse Owens of the United States won the 200-meter dash at the Berlin Olympics, collecting the third of his four gold medals.

In 1953, Operation Big Switch began as remaining prisoners taken during the Korean War were exchanged at Panmunjom.

In 1957, the teenage dance show "American Bandstand," hosted by Dick Clark, made its network debut on ABC-TV.

In 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe, 36, was found dead in her Los Angeles home; her death was ruled a probable suicide from "acute barbiturate poisoning." South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela was arrested; it was the beginning of 27 years of imprisonment.

In 1969, the U.S. space probe Mariner 7 flew by Mars, sending back photographs and scientific data.

In 1974, the White House released transcripts of subpoenaed tape recordings showing that President Richard Nixon and his chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, had discussed a plan in June 1972 to use the CIA to thwart the FBI's Watergate investigation; revelation of the tape sparked Nixon's resignation.

In 1986, it was revealed by Arts & Antiques magazine that artist Andrew Wyeth had, over a 15-year period, secretly created some 240 drawings and paintings of a woman named Helga Testorf, a neighbor in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

In 1991, Democratic congressional leaders formally launched an investigation into whether the 1980 Reagan-Bush campaign had secretly conspired with Iran to delay release of American hostages until after the presidential election, thereby preventing an "October surprise" that supposedly would have benefited President Jimmy Carter. (A task force later concluded there was "no credible evidence" of such a deal.)

Ten years ago: Floyd Landis was fired by his team and the Tour de France no longer considered him its champion after his second doping sample tested positive for higher-than-allowable levels of testosterone. The late Reggie White was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, John Madden, Rayfield Wright and Harry Carson. Four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher died in Seattle at age 51.

Five years ago: Standard & Poor's lowered the United States' AAA credit rating by one notch to AA-plus. A federal jury convicted three New Orleans police officers, a former officer and a retired sergeant of civil rights violations in the 2005 shooting deaths of a teenager and a mentally disabled man crossing the Danziger Bridge following Hurricane Katrina. (The convictions were overturned because of prosecutorial misconduct, and the former officers pleaded guilty in April 2016 to a reduced number of charges.) The sun-powered robotic explorer Juno rocketed toward Jupiter on a five-year quest to discover the secret recipe for making planets. (Juno reached Jupiter on July 4, 2016.)

One year ago: In a speech at American University in Washington, President Barack Obama assailed critics of his Iran nuclear deal as "selling a fantasy" to the American people, warning Congress that blocking the accord would damage the nation's credibility and increase the likelihood of more war in the Middle East. Actress Jennifer Aniston secretly married actor-director Justin Theroux at their home in Bel Air, California.

Sad for the athletes that have worked so hard to get there and I wish them the very best but they are in a shithole and there are a lot of serious things totally out of their control  to go wrong.

And you left out people that can't even buy groceries or toilet paper because there are none on the shelves

Seems like this happens every time the Olympics are held. Not sure why places compete to hold them anymore.

Location selection is corrupt as hell.  But that place probably reaves a new low, even though it was not quite so bad back when it was selected.

And now we have a 2-day 5-pack free for all. Womp womp.
Pretty good deal on Short Stories
Have you noticed the number of new Rothschild's being introduced?
Not really, not a big fan so don't really look.
...as you mentioned Short Stories, while a perfecto is the same size.
True they are close but I like the taste of the Hemmingway line thus my luv for short stories when I need a smaller smoke for time reasons and the signature when I have adequate time.

I really don't smoke a lot of cigars less than 5" or more but keep, some good ones for when appropriate.  Hard to fish with a long cigar and often have to dump it when a fish hits thus those low budget MCII PC's will be perfect.

CLE has five new brands that I'm curious about....
Aladino, Rancho Luna and Tatascan have been around for a bit, but well under the radar.  For some reason I get the impression of CI exclusive type secondary tobacco cigars....but from CLE....I'm curious.

There are two additional new offerings, Chele and Prieto.  Seem to be more mainstream offerings, but again below the radar.

Anyone had any of these?  Think it's wishful thinking to hope they appear on a jam.

The house behind me is a rental.  The grass was about 2 feet tall, and crap all over the back yard.  Yesterday they cleaned it all up, so I suspect they are getting it ready for new renters.

My neighbors brother (around 54 years old), came to stay with them.  He came in the spring and has been there ever since. My wife smokes cigarettes, so when she goes out side they both seemed to have started a smoking club.  A few times a day, I always find her out there having a cigarette with him.  Finally I told her, "You don't now that guy. He's bumming cigarettes off of you, he says he's a contractor and can work on houses, and before you know it, he'll be over here all the time."  She's like, "Yeal I know, but he's really a nice guy, and he is our neighbors brother...!"  I'm like, "Well, I know I need to make myself a little clearer since we have a slight communication problem. So let's see if I can say this where your can understand what I'm saying... Stay the fuck away from him until I can get some sort of vibe on him.  You now, contractors normally don't live on their brothers couch and bum cigarettes."

Wednesday my wife looks out the window and says, "Hey, the police are parked in front of our house..."  Fifteen minutes goes by and the officer is still sitting in his SUV.  Thirty minutes, still sitting.  One hour, still sitting.  Finally after one and a half hours he leaves.  Mmmm, that's sort of odd...?

Well, it appears that my wife's new smoking buddy last night, grabbed my neighbors dog under one arm, grabbed a shotgun in the other and took off running down the alley.  I guess my neighbor called the police.  The police chased him, and found the gun in some bushes, and he dropped the dog at one point and the dog came home.  The police took him to a sike ward.  Last I heard he escaped the hospital, and also has other warrants out on him.

I told my wife, "If you see him out there tonight while your smoking cigarettes, scream real loud, so I can lock the door...!  She's like, "You'd lock me out there..?"  Well, he is your friend, not mine.... :)

Resistance is futile.
Besides, if you get more cigars, you might be able to get a smoking buddy as well.

Someone has finally figured out how to title the auctions on CBid.com... seems a lot easier to sort and get brands together. Not that I'm looking at anything in particular.

Must have changed at some point. Obsidian White Noise over there now...
You can still get the MCII deal.  On the FU page there is a box below it to click.

See it now... I'm new to the FU.  8)

don't make me go back there, over $100 last week, about a $60 shipment this week, Most of it a new Stinky ashtray for the legion, either somebody stole the stinky Jr, or a bartender threw it away.  with the clientel we get, I'm betting it grew legs and walked.  Well at least they didn't drop it and break it like the ceramic ones.

lol. I know what you mean. Once you win something, it can get crazy.
I noticed a couple days ago. My typical "closing today", sort by Product looked a lot more organized. Makes it easier/faster to scroll though the list. I do wish it had a favorite watch list like the Famous auction, but this seems one step closer.

Do you do most of the cigar funding for the legion?

actually it's slowed down a lot now, some of the older cigar smokers passed away, I just buy stuff
from the money we collect at $2 a cigar from the humidor.  Last were some of the Villager bundles, and a fiver
of seductions and centurions.  we are probably set for a few months.  i use a gurkha spec ops hard case as the humidor,
they kept dropping and breaking the wooden ones.  if it were service members that were smoking, I'd fund the the refilling of the case, but mostly it is "guests" who like the lower drink prices,
I buy the replacemnts, on the money in the humidor.

Schools are about 60% of my property taxes, major fuk-job.  That is why our high school can afford a $450,000 Jumbotron on the football stadium along with a $350,000/year administrator.

They don't go away here at 65 they just freeze at the current levels.

You'd think they were just giving stuff away. What's the tax rate there?
About 8-8.5% depending on the school, district and fire district.
That's not as bad as I would have thought for a no income tax state. Ours is 6%, with some reductions for "necessities" like food and clothing. Not your high dollar designer stuff, mind you.
They get you on the property taxes.  Plus there's a business income tax euphemistically called "margins tax" so our political heroes can keep saying Texas has no state income tax.

That's what nails so many businesses. Retail places get it, because they just tack it on to the sale. But service people don't seem to understand that if a customer pays for your labor, you owe 2.5% to the state. Period.

Commie, indeed.

Taxation is theft.

Good evening gents. I saw a pretty funny billboard this evening. Wish I had a photo for ya. It was for a local realtor. It had Trump and Clinton's images on one side and on the other it asked, "looking to sell your house and move to Canada? I can help."

I'm going to take a break and watch a little Utube.  After I get enough of Marshal Law, Everyone at the DNC Loves Hillary, Let's give more free tax payers money to Iran, Did the World Trade Center really fall down, How did Flight 93 disappear into a hole in the ground, Was the Patriot Act modeled after the KGB's version from Russia and now I now why the 5 WalMart closings now look like they were converted into gulags, and on and on.  As soon as I'm brave enough to come out from under my bed, I'll post some more about cigars... :)

Don't forget to put on your foil hat, Dad.  ;)
I should have put that foil hat on as you suggested....!  Here's the call I got this afternoon.

Have that here as well this weekend. That's how I spent my time after leaving work, went out to get one of the kids a bookbag, then new school shoes for all, since they wear uniforms. Then cleaning the house a bit for the oldest's 10th birthday party Sunday. Evening, all.
